God, seriously? She's "dumb, clumsy, and has no redeeming values" and yet everyone seems to agree that OMG, LOOK AT ALL THAT LATENT POTENTIAL. Seems that the pieces start to show their "true" colors, which again, isn't very supprising, seeing as eliminating competition is a pretty flimsy reason to waste magic on. And the poses, OH THE POSES.

And the wish. Bitch please, are you an anime protagonist or are you a character? Jesus, if you were male, everyone would hate your guts. Mami's turnaround was interesting, and if genuine, just shows how much it panders to moe expectations.

Again and again, music is good, other technicals are in place and thoughtful, it's just this writing is terrible. Quite a gruesome moment when the heads roll, but I suspect her to come back with Madoka's wish. Either way, cue typical OMG SOMEONE WHO HAD A NAME JUST DIED trauma. It's basically your standard magical girl show with a grimdark theme. It's not even grimdark magical girls, it's just themed grimdark.

Conclusion of the first three episodes: technically it's mostly there, if a little uneven. The harsh cool lighting mixes well with the softer warm lighting, specific lighting on characters allows for improved reactions, it's just the writing and plot are so Godawful stock standard. There's fun to be had with it I suppose, but who the hell said this was better than Wandering Son?

Might have been seventh, but I definitely read that series in junior high. Probably sixth, perhaps seventh. I'd read fantasy books before then -- the genre has always been one of my favorites, and I'd read things such as Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles, the Narnia series, Redwall books, and others I'm sure -- but Redwall aside those were shorter, and though the Redwall books aren't short they are fairly easy to read. Eddings was some of the first "more adult" fantasy I read.

We couldn't possibly have been more different children. I remember having a tough time going through the first Harry Potter books. Yeah.

If you can't stand Haruhi you aren't going to like the show, obviously, as your complaints help show... but the way that you seem to think that because you hate her she should be considered objectively horrible is ridiculous. She's not. I think some of her ideas are amusing, make for some funny stuff... Sure, other times she's annoying, but not always.

Actually I like or liked the show, knowing it's not really going anywhere interesting has kind of retroactively negatively altered my opinion but I liked it for sure when it came out despite wanting to choke the life out of Haruhi.

I don't hate it. Technically it's got everything, if in uneven amounts. Short some of the slice of life scenes, where the animation gets shitty and the music is boring. The fights are pretty damned solid, the visual style is nuanced, the music sets mood very well, it's just the writing is so stiff and obvious and the plot so paper thin. It would be fine if the show played off that but it feels like just another SRS BUSINESS magical girl show with sorta grotesque enemies and REAL DEATH(tm). I can see the appeal, but this isn't better than stuff like Wandering Son.

Now stop keeping me up. I SLEEP.

5cm is one of those stories that heavily hinge on how much empathy it can get out the audience. When I first watched it, it gave me a really heavy dose of nostalgia and sometimes I rewatch it from time to time when I want to remember what it was like to be really depressed (yeah it's weird I know). It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea (unless you enjoy slideshows, which I admit I do, as long as Shinkai is drawing the pictures). In this sense, Voices and Promised Place were much stronger works, since they had an actual plot.
