This list was acceptable until the bolded part. It never occured to me that people actually can enjoy this movie. Yeah it kinda is animation porno in 1080p but this movie had like the most superfluous story I have seen in the recent years.

You know, if 5cm was the only film that Shinkai had made, I feel like it would get a better reputation. People that saw it after seeing Voices and Days probably stand a good chance at being (rightfully so) jaded by the plot and similar themes.

Anyway for my part I saw it before watching Days, and I like it, but that's just my opinion.

5cm is one of those stories that heavily hinge on how much empathy it can get out the audience. When I first watched it, it gave me a really heavy dose of nostalgia and sometimes I rewatch it from time to time when I want to remember what it was like to be really depressed (yeah it's weird I know). It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea (unless you enjoy slideshows, which I admit I do, as long as Shinkai is drawing the pictures). In this sense, Voices and Promised Place were much stronger works, since they had an actual plot.

SRS BUSINESS magical girl show with sorta grotesque enemies and REAL DEATH(tm). I can see the appeal, but this isn't better than stuff like Wandering Son.

But it's hilarious.

One thing about that each season of the anime covers around 2 or 3 novels.(think it's closer to 2) They are going be around 16 novels!

It would be crazy if they adapted it all.

It could be the new Naruto.

I don't hate it. Technically it's got everything, if in uneven amounts. Short some of the slice of life scenes, where the animation gets shitty and the music is boring. The fights are pretty damned solid, the visual style is nuanced, the music sets mood very well, it's just the writing is so stiff and obvious and the plot so paper thin. It would be fine if the show played off that but it feels like just another SRS BUSINESS magical girl show with sorta grotesque enemies and REAL DEATH(tm). I can see the appeal, but this isn't better than stuff like Wandering Son.

Yeah that's really the problem i have with shinkai work. I saw voice of a distant star first and found it to be emotionally moving, promise and 5cm try to push your emotions in the same exact way, and they just don't have the impact as they did the first time i experienced it.

At least they had dem clouds.

Personally like promised it doesn't hold up on re-watches. Voice of a distant star is the only shinkai work that I'm confident to call great at this point.

Which is also kind of funny, cause it looks like shit. Most new to Shinkai might go in expecting the 1080p visual acid trip that he puts out now... eheh not what you're getting bitches.

You don't like watching dudes take Japanese transportation to meet up with a girl?

No taste. Personally I think it perfectly embodies kyori, and sinkai does it without the use of bizarre scifi conventions. Not that I don't love his other films, but I think this is the most relatable and poignant of his works. Maybe we just live in an age with social networking sites, Skype, etc, where these vast differences don't mean as much, so people can't relate… I can't help but tear up as they part that winter morning - but I guess that's just me.

Voices is effectively future proof. Until we discover FTL communication, its core message will not be lost upon newer generations. Even then, it will forever remain a reminder of how far humanity has progressed since the first time Shinkai painted a scene of clouds. Someday I'd like him to revisit it with a proper team and budget behind him. I'm not asking for much, just clean up the character art and the CGI and maybe give them iPhones instead of clampshells.

There are long fantasy books that I do feel are too long -- Terry Goodkind for instance, I think all of his books could have cut at least at third of the length out and they'd be maybe better books -- but Robert Jordan, not at all. I went through all of those books quickly, sure they're long but they're very readable. His writing is so good that I went through each book quickly, quicker than other books of similar length. My main "complaint" is just that he wasn't able to finish the series because of his tragic illness... I never minded the extra detail of the later books, it didn't make them worse at all.

We couldn't possibly have been more different children. I remember having a tough time going through the first Harry Potter books. Yeah.

Harry Potter wasn't written yet when I was in junior high, so I haven't actually read the series...

I like school though, I never got a final grade lower than B- through the end of 12th grade. And I've always loved books. We grew up with books, not TV... my parents didn't even let us have a TV in our house until I was eight. I don't remember minding too much though at the time, just a little... I remember minding more that they wouldn't let me have a Nintendo.

(Of course though, when they said that if I got videogame consoles I'd get hooked to them they were absolutely right, so I can't entirely say they were wrong...)

5cm felt like warming up the same content for the third time with the twist of completly casting any kind of story aside.

Actually anyone who found 5cm interesting but disappointing and can read Japanese should give the novelization a shot; apparently it has a lot more background detail and plot that Shinkai wrote up but couldn't fit into the movie.

I found WoT boring. I'm a ASOIAF fan though so I can't really talk much. I was just making a joke about the braid thing. You got to admit the braid pulling is kinda excessive.

What an anti-climactic finale. This felt like filler. No idea if it was or not seeing as it's a slice of life series, but still. Oh look Shunuske appreciates everyone, so that must mean it's a good stopping point, right? WRONG! Seeing him be all ninja like in the towel was amusing though.
