I, uh...*cough*...I might have...

Of course, I didn't mean it as "anyone who is okay with the lack of parents in SOL shows must be a dakimakura-hugging hikki". But you'd have a hard time convincing me that the reasoning for the lack of parents in these shows doesn't have at least something to do with what I said.

Tamako Market dared to have parents and it paid the ultimate price for it. :D

In the PSY thread, I saw a chart of the top ten singles on iTunes Japan and noticed something neat:

Yep, that's the TV size version of the Attack on Titan OP, 90 seconds of music for 250 yen, released just over a week ago, sitting pretty at #8 in the singles charts.

With a name like FUNKY MONKEY BABYS how is it possible that they not be at number one?
Their latest album was number one at the Oricon though!

Dunno why miwa is in the top, her single was released last year :lol (hmm, i guess it's because of the Rich Man Poor Woman SP)

It's worth noting that iTunes sales have very little effect on the overall Oricon charts. While Exile Pride is at number 5 on Oricon's daily rankings, the Ninja re Bang Bang song is currently down at number 20.

I'm not saying that Guren no Yumiya is going to sell badly when it's eventually released in full, but iTunes isn't a great indicator of how well a single will sell in the long run.

And yet one of the worst pop songs ever written is sitting right above it.

Why Japan.

Japan really likes Taylor Swift. All my co-workers are always asking me if I love her as much as they do.

The answer is no. Forever.

Oh, I don't really give a damn about if it signals future physical media sales or not. I'm just amused that SnK hype or whatever managed to drive the song into the top ten despite a hilariously higher price-to-song-length ratio than everything else.

(Actually, checking the top ten from within iTunes itself, it's at #7 right now. Also, there's a Miku song at #28... one spot below the DOKI DOKI PRECURE ENDING.

iTunes Japan charts are a magical place.)

aikatsu has parents in it. i guess it had a good run :(

Your comments were general and unspecific enough that no one here should have been offended. Well, unless there are people self identifying with "some dude with a dakimakura doesn't want to imagine having to seek the approval of his waifu's parents."
um wow, offensive much???????

Hunter X Hunter - 75

A nice episode to end the arc, hopefully next week won't be a recap and we'll get right down to business. Can't wait!

Tamako Market END

Aw, I seriously had a blast with this show. Twelve episodes was just the right length of time with this crew, even if a part of me wanted to spend more time in that little shopping arcade. Pretty much non-stop warm fuzzies from beginning to end, and even some laughs along the way. It reminded me of my time in Kyoto living by the shopping arcade, which is never a bad thing.

I really liked the cast too! we've been talking about it a lot tonight, but I really dug having the father being a central character in Tamako's life. Small things like
Midori having feelings for Tamako
were executed with more care than you rarely see afforded to that sort of thing. Kaoru
was never played up for laughs, which living here in Japan is quite frankly incredible. I can't even begin to describe how frustrating it can be to watch TV or hear people talking about this kind of stuff. KyoAni gets a lot of respect from me for being really tasteful
.

Just good ole fun.

Also, I know this is basically a common trope in SOL/CGDCT shows, but none of the characters in K-On! have parents, do they? :lol It just strikes me as funny that they've only explained the absence of Yui and Ui's parents once ("they're in Germany for Christmas!"), and then they're evidently never mentioned again. :lol

Wait for it...

Toradora 23-25 / END

Well, that was Toradora all right. It's such a drama queen.

I don't think I love it as much as some other people here, and I'm not crushingly depressed that it's done. But even with all the ridiculousness of the end, a lot of the stuff that happened worked well for me. I think at a certain point in the whole crazy train I realized that I was kind of trying to resist it even though it wasn't doing anything that egregious. And even the really stupid stuff led to worthwhile things.

At the end of 24, I had almost lost all faith in anything good happening again. I know the characters are young and stupid, but their plan was really dumb, and Minori supporting it with all of her money was even dumber. The episode also had these weird comic swings in the middle of its dramatic moments (the pratfall into the river being the most obvious example). The sudden appearance of Taiga's mom shook up a lot of things that were already shaking out just fine on their own.

But in 25, there were a lot of touching things that I liked to see. There's something really innocent and endearing about their relationship and their first real moments of intimacy. I was happy to learn more about Yasuko and her past. All those things would have been totally possible without the timeskip stuff at the end (and the whole night sky metaphor was so goddamn tortured), but whatever. Takasu and Taiga have really great chemistry by the end, and I'm happy to see them together. Though I feel like the end kind of cheats Minori and Ami of fulfilling conclusions to their character arcs. Minori especially is just awful. A real shame. Even after her little speech in episode 24, she still always seemed like a ridiculous self-sacrificing caricature to me.

In the end, Toradora was good. I wish it had a lighter touch, but even for all the dramatic excesses of its plotting, the characters themselves (Taiga especially) develop in a very satisfying way. It's nice to watch them grow. It's the sort of show that could make one nostalgic about one's school days, when friends were close, the future was distant and infinitely wide, and responsibility wasn't so crushing.

It's not really in my normal wheelhouse, and there are definitely parts of the journey that rub me the wrong way, but there are enough good things to look back on that I don't regret taking it.

EDIT: Looking back at Watanabe Kazuma's impressions, I agree with a lot of what he said.

Busou Shinki 11-12 END

Huh, well this was a surprisingly action packed finale featuring Drunken Shinki's, Evil Bishies, and Birthday Cakies. Honestly, this was pretty dumb fun and I'd probably watch another season of this, even with the "harem" consisting solely of literal objects swooning over some bland overprivileged high-schooler living away from his parents. I know I'll definitely watch the OVA that comes out soon.

Busou Shinki Moon Angel

busoushinkimoon.jpg

This OVA is about kid whom recently moved to a new town and has trouble making friends. One day he comes across a broken Shinki and decides to fix her up on his own. It's not long after this that things start to go astray thanks to the Shinki's mysterious past and she eventually disappears. The boy, distraught by this, seeks help from an owner of a Shinki shop voiced by none other than SUGITA who has some dark and seedy connections to the Shinki. Together, they fight crime
experimental weapon systems.

From what I can gather, this was a bunch of 5 minute shorts compiled into one full 40-minute OVA. Unlike the TV series, this was actually animated by Kinema Citrus (CODE:BREAKER, Yuyushiki) and has some pretty sweet traditionally animated scenes mixed in with some nice use of CG too. Definitely worth checking out for that stuff alone.

It's actually pretty funny how much of a bait-and-switch the TV series was considering this OVA's pretty action packed and kinda grim at times whereas the TV series was little more than a comedic harem series. That's some Grade-A trolling.

How is that offensive? I was quoting someone else's post and not directing it at anyone in particular.

Duuuuuuude. Anime of the Year.

They're totally shoujo anime archetypes, too. The kid with the sword (Sugane) is old-fashioned and responsible and supposedly "distrusts women" at the start of the story but his heart is changed by Hajime and he begins to feel "love and longing" for her. Joe (small-head dude) is the angsty, dark bishounen with a DRAMATIC BACKSTORY that has been living very long with an EMPTY HEART but is eventually able to regain his "passion" thanks to Hajime.

TOTALLY NOT SHOUJO.

How's Photo Kano going for you this season?

Tatsunoko is the biggest worry about Gatchaman Crowds, to be honest. But they're producing Muromi, so how bad can it be?

Kanon is amazing, tokiya.

Nah,
the profiles pretty much confirm that both of the dudes are going to fall for the heroine.

I haven't had a good shoujo drama porn since fucking forever. Tonari tried but it sucked shit.

Oh yeah I guess they fight evil too? That's a plus.
