And for a show supposedly for little girls, there's been a bit of Kumojacky in only a loincloth lately.

Not that I"m complaining.

Yes, I imagine that there is some level of characterization going on with all the dialogue in this episode.

But, I couldn't just help but just read into it, just a little differently.

There are plenty of ways to start a series, though I don't think I've ever seen one start quite like this. It's hard to say much about the first episode in terms of story, as basically everything changed by the end: Simon gained some courage, the setting was radically altered (to say the least) and we're only just introduced to Yoko. If anything can be said, it's that we're given characters who might be familiar with one another, but we can still grow with them as the paradigm shifts around them. A neat way to start, I think. Also, they're reeallly hamming up Kamina. He's too awesome for his own good. I also dig Simon, despite not knowing much about him, but I think I'm just a sucker for that worried boy type. (See: Shinji) Like I said, it's sort of hard to know the direction the show will go from here so i'll just sit back and watch.

The episode was over the top visually from beginning to end. I think the most impressive part was the visual consistency of the character art through really hectic and fast moving scenes. It was really something to behold and I hope it keeps it up. Everything just looks so awesome. The style was something I was expecting coming in and it didn't disappoint. The soundtrack seemed like it was all over the place with even a little jazziness to it from time to time. I liked it.

Another show I can't wait to get back to soon!

This is a bad show. The best bad show.

Pure entertainment.

I'm considering rewatching this show to see if it's really as detestable as I remember or if my memory has made it worse with time. Who would support me on this/actually be interested in reading me go through the great experiment?

Have you seen the garbage in some a lot of those threads? I'm sure Kagari can agree with me that there is a lot of crap that goes on in that thread. While my attitude isn't wholly justified, I think it's a reasonable response considering some of the idiotic posts those threads spawn.

I was going to complain about how most of the episode was looking at screens all day and how I do that enough at work but,
actually impressed they are killing people off and hell in the same episode they were introduced.

I guess I'll have to keep watching now.

I really think episode one has some of the best direction in the entire series. It's rare for them to accurately capture the sense of scale and weight they achieved in that climactic battle. So good.

Geass? It's certainly worth a rewatch for the Entertainment factor. No better confluence of melodrama and cheap narrative hooks since its release.

---

Going back to Valvrave, I don't know what was worse this episode, the shamelessly stupid writing or the Lobster-Bot:

I've always hated Geass with a furious passion, but I'm now questioning if I ever really watched it with the right attitude. Knowing how bad it is might make it enjoyable on the second round.

Also, I love the lobster bot. Feels like the ultra dumb mobile armors Gundam sometimes is lucky enough to get.

Yeah, as is well known, crazy expensive. And given where anime revenue comes from I guess it is understandable to some degree. Still thats way beyond my threshold and I'm a U.S. comic buyer. I'm amazed the whole thing has not imploded due to endemic piracy. I guess the remaining folks are just those who need physical items and the merch that comes with said items.

Makes me feel even more grateful to folks like Crunchyroll. And frankly amazed they could make deals to provide content so cheaply.

$40/episode for Date A Live? Damn.

Should organize a group re-watch for extra Entertainment. I'd jump in.

I'm okay with the "Waffe" bots (oh god these names) but the lobsters just strain whatever tolerance I have for bad design. At least it's not as bad as VVV v6:

(I'm totally okay with Yellow VVV)

Yeah, VVV6 is the worst of the designs. I hope that it looks badass with all the green crap activated, but not holding out hope.

As for a group Geass rewatch, I'd totally be up for it if people want to jump in. Sounds like a fun way to watch that show.

Really nice background work during some of those vacation scenes. I think this was actually the first episode where I felt the team banter was working pretty well, so that's a pretty good sign.

Lol, oh god. Sorry, but I can't believe that entire article is ripped from someone's Twitter posts. But yeah, anime is crazy expensive in Japan.

The conversation about piracy is interesting. I've always assumed that BD buyers were mostly interested in the LE extras because of how disproportionate the LE sales are to DVD and RE sales.

I'd estimate that somewhere between 50-60% of news stories on ANN/Crunchyroll are sourced from Twitter. And about 10-20% of those are from the consistently same accounts too.

Yeah, that's true. At least ANN has some interesting editorials now and then. I'm still super-grateful to them for explaining what a production company was back when I had no idea and thought animation studios were paying for the entire cost of anime.

Edit: Actually, I wasn't really aware of the 10%-20% thing. I guess they usually rely on the same Japanese-speakers for news quickly, lol. That's what makes sense to me, anyway.

I don't know man...watching that and Valvrave at the same time might cause you health issues or even a relapse into hatred.

(Disclaimer: This is coming from someone who doesn't hate that show and actually likes parts of it for other reasons too, but does get the appeal of what's being proposed here).

The storyboard must have been insane to look at for that fight. "They go up and over the creature, and then through this tunnel, but then then they divert through this hall and then behind this pillar, but then they're saved by Simon and pop up over here..." It's just super creative and all at this fast pace.

I see we have the base purple design, but... how could we make it as garish as humanly possible?

Yeah. I assume there are no streaming services for Anime within Japan that would I think ease piracy rates.

Come on man, rewatching alongside seeing Valvrave evolve/devolve would be half the fun. You should totally watch with us. A perspective from someone who actually like the show unironically could be really valuable.

Well it seems like the most obvious thing to do when you are writing about a subject centered around Japan. Unless you have the cash to hire local press people. And obviously no-one in the anime blogging space has that. Of course if they are using the same sources all the time it kind of would be nice for them to pay those people something.

I mean, I'm not saying it's a bad thing, just that, like you said, it's a sourcing necessity if you want breaking news, like what Wario does.

Also another 10-20% of ANN's stories are probably sourced from blogs like Yaraon/Otanews/0taku, which are all themselved mostly sourced from 2ch anyway.

My suggestion would be to hold it off until Summer, when VVV is on break and more people have the time to participate.

Did you like the mecha fight in this episode btw? I'm a bit curious as to everyone's thoughts on the mecha fights between MJP and Valvrave.

I think the only redeemable bits are the pink explosions.

What the hell? Well... I guess this isn't too outrageous considering Fate/Zero. Still...

Here's a related question. Is there any western music streaming service that has a J-Pop/Anime Music catalog of note? Spotify doesn't seem to, neither does Rdio. Even Sonys own Music Unlimited sees to be free of anime music.

I personally just thought it was kinda funny since none of that information is particularly hard to find. To be honest, I was also disappointed since I was expecting something a bit more substantial. :(

TuneIn has some stations that play Japanese music. I use that sometimes.

that's probably a decent enough idea. Now to just remember to do it

Maybe, since I do enjoy laughing at what I consider the bad parts too, but by the time you get to R2 that's when things might start to get ugly (in every sense).

But since it's more likely to happen in summer...we'll see. In any case, don't say I didn't warn you!

Maybe it's just me but I don't like any of the Valvrave Mecha designs.

I love them, but maybe I'm the crazy one.

When does VVV go on break anyway? If I'm going to organize a Geass rewatch around the end of the first part of VVV, I should probably keep track of when it'll be.
