Oh no, what am I getting myself into?

Kanon (2006) - 1

This is going to be another one of THOSE shows isn't it? The kind of show that's going to consistently try to kick me in the feels?

So what I saw here was basically the plot to every anime high-school visual novel (in fact that's even where this came from). The kind of plot that will include about 6 females and two guys.

I'm calling it, this is the kind of anime you need to watch with a friend. Only so you can play "Guess who the main character's going to get with at the end!" Also so you can play a good drinking game with this anime. You know when to take a shot.

To be honest male pairings are more interesting and fun than female pairings.

In what way? Just because you have some horndog pretty boy hounding over an effeminate male trying to put it in from behind 24/7? Shit is shallow as fuck, which totally makes sense why fanfiction websites are plagued with this garbage.

I used to watch a lot of anime but sometime around 2008 I just stopped. I think I just overloaded myself and between school and work I think Code Geass 2 was just the final straw for me. However, recently I have decided that its been long enough and have decided to get back to it. I'll watch pretty much anything but like in particular sci-fi. Since 2008 what series would you guys say are good watches? Like I said just things that are good doesn't matter the genre.

Also, why are seasons only 12 episodes now? And where do you guys watch shows?

I'll just post what I posted in the Attack on Titan thread. YMMV obviously.

2008: Code Geass season 2, Kemeko DX, Ga-rei Zero, Soul Eater, Detroit Metal City, Birdy The Mighty: Decode

2009: Akikan, Sengoku Basara, Basquash, Shin Mazinger, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Needless, Saint Seiya: Lost Canvas

2010: Shiki, Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt, MM!, Milky Holmes

2011: Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka, Level E, Tiger and Bunny, Toriko, Gintama', Kaiji season 2, Steins;Gate, Sket Dance, Dororon Enma-Kun Meramera, Yondemasuyo Azazel-san, Deadman Wonderland, Blue Exorcist, Blood-C, C3, Horizon in the Middle of Nowhere, Hunter x Hunter, Mirai Nikki

2012: High School DxD, Symphogear, Another, Black Rock Shooter TV, Space Brothers, Medaka Box Abnormal, Accel World, Tsuritama, Binbougami ga, Sword Art Online, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Teekyu, Btooom, Ixion Saga DT

2013: Senyu, Ishida to Asakura

Didn't list anything from this season.

The Light of El Cantare
Chihayafuru 2 12:

I'm slowly catching up on this, but I just have to remark that I can't remember the last time that Chihaya took the first card in a match and I'm incredibly frustrated that every single match seems to be taking the same damned pattern of "Chihaya loses the first few cards and is SHOCKU at her opponent's karuta power level -> Chihaya slowly deduces the opponent's play style through an intricate synthesis of MEMORIES, FEELINGS, incredibly minute observations about her opponent, and CSI Karuta psychological profiling -> Chihaya has a moment of self-realization about her own KARUTA SENSE and perfectly counters her opponent's style for a (mostly offscreen) comeback victory". My patience for the actual karuta matches is at an all-time low and this show is lucky that it's so amazing at producing wave after wave of eccentric and endearing minor characters because otherwise it's horribly stagnant at this point.

I agree, especially all the canonical moments included in most series and then how various events even plot related add additional layers of complexity to their relationships, and the way they gaze at each other too. Probably the best aspect to most action and shonen action series, imo.

What the fuck is that!?

Skipping Jojo OVAs must've been a great idea in hindsight.

He hasn't even got to the good stuff, and most of the episodes look far better than that in either set of OVA's.

That's like taking a single frame out of David Production's version and basing your opinion of the entire series from that image.

Was going to watch it either way.

Which can only be stretched so far, much like the crack pairings fans come up with.

It only needs to stretch as far as it needs to fit that pairing.

eeeeeehhhhhhh That sounds like rivalry bromance more than anything. Like Garp and Gol D Roger for example.

Except Naruto, that's just straight up BL.

You should post the clip with that "gay kiss dare" thing that they used to do every time one of the character's brothers showed up.

Ah here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3tjVGm58M8
"Gay chicken".

As opposed to classy the stupid lesbian antics where it's just girls mashing their parts against each other? lol

I will say, the "good" yuri is more relationship focused than the "good" yaoi, which is more seme/uke focused. But that's because...

Females have more skinship, males are all about bromance.

The only problem I have with your typical male pairings is that one usually looks so effeminate it all but looks like a hetero pair.
... it is visual coding for the semu/uke relationship, which is what women looking for yaoi are looking for. It's why bara is almost a separate and distinct genre of Japanese gay fiction (well, when it isn't used for comedic effect in your typically homophobic way).

I see Valvrave as a successor to stuff like Geass and SEED in terms of engineering design though. They're clearly meant to be colorful and striking in appearance with a lot of gimmicks and attachments which make them look like fun toys for kids. The only bad thing about the Valvrave designs is really that they're so busy it falls into parody territory... but maybe that's intentional? Idk... lol.

Nothing in Valvrave is a coincidence. It was all planned that way from the beginining!

Ah scrubs, you were such a treasure trove of moments.

I never expected to come out of this little exchange learning something new.

It's also generally better and more interesting.

Though like with all of these, there are good ones and bad ones.

Armored Hunter Mellowlink 5-12

I've been watching this on and off but was never compelled to marathon it until episode 10. I'm a sucker for a good rival but unfortunately the boss fights during the build up of the rival got less interesting. Luckily the payoff was worth it, that fight with Major Boil was fantastic. Him and
Lt. Cardine
are probably the only named opponents I'll remember. I was concerned a bit when
a save the princess
plot came about but luckily it didn't distract too much from the core of the show. I'm not usually a fan of moody soft spoken protagonists but here it guaranteed that there weren't any drawn out battles of philosophy during fights or mid combat speculation. All in all a rather good show that I think should've spawned a fantastic video game. I mean ever episode was already a different level and a new boss, would've been so easy, oh well.

That's one of the major advantages of having Mellowlink as a protagonist, he has no interest in discussions or arguments. Kind of like Chirico from Votoms.

Don't forget to fund Zach Braff's next movie.

I never expected to come out of this little exchange learning something new.
It's no surprise that gay men have different (sexual) desires than straight women with a particular fetish.

It's also generally better and more interesting.

It's also harder to find. Other than the yaoi that gets animated and turned into real anime, most of it is just porn of some sort or another. And hey, I watched both versions of Queer as Folk, so I don't have a problem with sex, but the porny nature of yaoi means that there's pretty much no story beyond the Japanese equivalent of a pizza boy showing up and accepting sex from the lonely housewife in lieu of a tip.

Pizza boy with his dick in the pizza is a classic

I thought most agreed that the lines are blurring between the two these days.

It's no surprise, but i thought there was enough overlap to not create their own genre of sorts lol.
Well, I look at it this way - the men in bear culture is pretty much the antithesis of what most women find (or are taught to find) attractive.

Which is why Kevin Smith likes to joke about how his bear friend went from being rejected by women over and over again to find a new guy to hook up with once he came out. lol

I thought most agreed that the lines are blurring between the two these days.
Naw, look at the yaoi today. The female-created stuff is still super thin pretty boys gently going down on each other and such.

That said, I have no idea what the bear culture is like in Japan or in Asia, since Asians seem to be both muscle and fat phobic, so who knows. If real world men in ni-chome actually look like manga/anime yaoi protagonists, I think I would be massively disappointed anyway. lol

If you're honestly trying to rag on girls tribing and saying that guys putting it in each other's asses is better then holy shit. :lol
