[Little Witch Academia TV] - 16
I can (somewhat) see where people are coming from with their critiques of this episode, but I don't feel the same way. As with the last string of episodes, I feel like this is actually part of the 'real' LWA TV series that actually feels crafted as opposed to just crapped out like the first cour.
What makes this particular 'wacky' adventure different to the kinds of adventures that Akko faced in the first cour of the series? Well, there's actually a number of important differences:
- Actual, serious stakes (perhaps outrageously serious stakes?)
- Akko isn't an idiot, she's actually coming up with ways to solve a problem
- Akko actually commits wholeheartedly to a task
- Akko experiences actual character growth
- Akko's is actually somewhat charming
I suppose you could just sum up the reason why this episode works by harping on the fact that the writing here actually works. In the first cour of the show, the characters would happen into some wacky situation that they needed to solve. But nothing about those situations, or the way they were resolved, meant anything for the characters. This isn't true here. In this episode, the way Akko handles the situation and how she experiences character growth is the actual point of the episode. Hurray!
I'm not saying that the episode is flawless. There's plenty of things to complain about:
- We visit Lotte's home and family but learn basically nothing about them. The scenario that has to be solved is basically incidental to the character's visiting Lotte's home. In a better show, these two things would actually be tied together.
- Speaking of Lotte, both her and Sucy are completely useless non-characters who show zero signs of character development. This is not only really boring, but completely inexcusable considering we are 16 episodes into the series! Side characters in Doremi get more fleshed out in a single episode than the supporting leads in this show!
- Akko's moment of self-doubt felt completely forced and unbelievable. It came from nowhere and went nowhere. It did not ring true to her character.
Still, basically a decent episode.
