Square Enix is reportedly working on a remake of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, following the success of Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake. According to internal documents, this project is labeled a "remake," indicating a significant overhaul beyond a simple remaster. Originally released in 2000 for the PlayStation, Dragon Quest VII was later updated for the Nintendo 3DS. This new version aims to surpass that effort with major changes to visuals, gameplay, or structure. The remake is slated for release in late 2025 or early 2026, aligning with Square Enix's fiscal calendar.

Cool if true, but also arguably the worst Dragon Quest game.

Commence with the arguments

Also, late 2025 is obviously not happening (mostly from the fact that I-II HD is releasing in October), and early 2026 sounds highly unlikely. Probably late 2026 to keep up with the cadence.

if true holly shit yes

awww no...
last time i played in PSX, the story is super slow : /
and the main character even uglier than 11, and looks like NPC rather than main character

I must be still sleepy, i thought it was 8 and small of joy sparked for while : /

It already got a remake for 3DS. Is the 3DS version just as bad? (Honest question, I've only played the 3DS version but I got too bored to continue around 20 hrs in)
🤷‍♂️ never knew about the 3ds game but I did play the psx game again last year and finding those puzzle pieces almost made me quit more than a few times.

I'm not high into remakes right now, but I'd be all over this one.

That said, Square Enix needs to focus on releasing DQX internationally first.

I didn't hated it but I agree its weird choice for remake, the most popular DQ is VIII which you would think they start from there.

Pretty sure the most popular DQ is III, which already got remade.

I always thought V was the most popular, which is why is got a expanded DS remake and a movie based on it.

Like the III remake style is cool, I think people would love a full modern day remake for V.

DQXI is the best selling game in the series by a pretty big margin, followed by DQIX actually.

Crazy. I've been working on the 3DS version on and off for a few years. I'm just about at 90 hours in and from what I understand I've entered the final stretch of the game. I did a lot of job leveling up which led to a lot of general leveling up. I hope I'm strong enough for the final boss without another 10 hours of leveling up needed. I consider myself a Dragon Quest fan. It's my favorite franchise. Dragon Quest 8 is arguably my GOAT video game (or 11, I LOVED 11) but I have admittedly only completed 5, 8, 9 and 11.

I am really liking 7 but I would describe it as a "deep cut" Dragon Quest game. I love the evil/monsters vs God theme in this game and how that eternal struggle is displayed. It's touching when a certain character describes God as "Heavenly Father" at one point. I can see the greatness in this game but I think it's easy to get lost in this game due to the nature of the gameplay loop (completing a town in the past, then revisiting it in the future to find puzzle pieces for a new town) and the game could be called slow (which some people love about the game). I don't feel 7 is a great mainstream DQ game like DQ 8. Maybe Japan just loves 7?

I was thinking to myself a lot lately if I'd ever replay a remake of this game since I'm aware of the remake projects of DQ going on. Would this game be worth another 80+ hours of time when so many other games exist? I felt they'd take care of remaking 4-6 before tackling 7.

Where is the Dragon Quest 8 remake? I feel like that game is begging for a remake/remaster to tide fans of the 3D games over while we wait for 12. I hope this remake of 7 is fashioned as a 3D remake and not a third 2D remake. I think the game could benefit from that. There is a very special game here I just don't think it's easy accessible for a large audience maybe a remake could make it a more accessible experience.

This shit was already remade on 3DS.

DQ and SaGa games always getting remakes while FF 5-6 stuck in limbo, FF 3/4 Remakes stuck on DS/Ipad… stupidest fucking company.

True, but maybe that is happening too

I mean look at DQ 3 and then 1 and 2 or look at Persona 3 remake and then 4 remake

Maybe they have that already planned atm.

Regardless bruv.....day 1

Ohh fu... K

😰.

I wanted to play the PS1 version... But it's already looking rough.

It caught my attention, and I have a 3DS copy. But its longevity is overwhelming.

There are YouTube videos. 7 parts out of 11 hours.

I'm overwhelmed because I saw an 11-hour gameplay and it was only the first part.

For worse characters there is that Fatty with high triglycerides who looks like a generic character

He's so fat that it seems to compress his knees.

..... and the Gay Character from Dragon Quest XI.

Uh, Torneko Taloon is awesome, sir. He basically is an NPC that you happen to play as, a merchant family man that saves the day with his good business skills. Plus he's the guy that started the entire Mystery Dungeon series.

As for DQ7 remake, that's a little odd. Besides the original trilogy and iOS ports, it's actually the most recent game in the series to get remade (the 2015 3DS remake) so it'd be weird to get another remake of it.

I'd rather them just go in order. No reason why they can't remake 4 or 5 in HD2D next. Those are both more popular than 7 anyway.

Square Enix's Japanese audience is their primary concern. This is nothing new or hard to grasp.

Wow. What an incredibly bad take.

1) Torneko is awesome.
2) Sylvando is awesome.

So.. you're wrong. And bad.

I swear, they will remake every DQ game multiple times before they even consider doing something with DQ 9...
I hope they do. IMO 6, 8 and 9 are the ones that really need remakes/remasters the most. 8 and 9 are more popular entries in the series and each of those two are often viewed as the best entry in the series. I think 8 has developed and earned a reputation as being a very special PS2 era JRPG (sort of like how Chrono Trigger is viewed for 16 bit JRPGs). It was the first major push to try and help the series find footing in the west. The DS was a phenomenon and 9 was the right game for the right time on that platform. 9 has never been remade or ported. 6 is probably the least ported/remastered/remade game of the NES/SNES DQs. It needs some love.

Will 4, 5 and 6 get 2D-HD remasters? Is this rumored DQ7 remake going to be a 2D-HD remaster or something more? It will be interesting to find out.

I love this game so much. I think what impressed me most about DQ XI is that XI was so good I had to admit XI was better than my GOAT (VIII).

Dragon Quest is a very special series.

I got the 3ds remake and like an idiot traded it in when I was about 25 hours in and realized how much more of the game there was.
Now that I have more time and patience, the game is very valuable and shop is dead.
I'd grab a remake of this in the style of DQ1-3 hd
