Square Enix's E3 2013 Booth Lineup Revealed!

Has anyone asked Yoshida about a Battle Arena? I still can't believe they've had this in 3 games and still haven't taken advantage of how awesome it would be to take on previous FF Heroes and Villians.

Square doesn't like having mature FF games. Evidently. If they let Matsuno have his way with XII we might have a BERSERK Final Fantasy through and through.
Nomura was very interested in making a more mature FF with versus. Let's wait and see if this direction remains, should the game be renamed to FFXV.

Ito also said in a video interview that he tries to appeal to new audiences as much as to satisfy older audiences.

EDIT: Lol at Agni's Philosophy being available for pre-order. Hmmm...

If some of these are being done for PS3/PSV, I could see some HD Collection games being done for PS3/PS4/PSV.

I could imagine that possibly as well, especially given the proposed connectivity between the PS4 and Vita. And I expect SE will release KH 2.5 overseas when it is eventually announced since it doesn't make sense otherwise to only release the first one.

So no Versus or Final Fantasy 15?

Isn't the booth just for playable stuff? This doesn't mean they won't announce anything new.

Right? Right?

They are saving Versus/XV/whatever for the Sony Conference so they certainly aren't going to outright spoil the reveal. It may not even appear in their booth.

Type 0 was also more mature in certain aspects. So yeah...

Oh yeah, that's another one.

Only Kitase expressed his thoughts about part of the fanbase having grown out of the main FF's target audience, but even he wanted/ has been wanting to make a more mature game for a while.

Do you mean a sort of standalone battle arena thing? I feel like it'd end up being a whole lot like Dissidia.

I have no Idea how to contain my excitement if this is true.New IP maybe ?

Is this a new listing? Guessing it's placeholder for their Luminous/next gen FF (not Versus).

I really hope those Agni's Philosophy listings are just Amazon people jumping the gun. Square said that trailer wasn't for a real game, and I hope it stays that way.

Versus or bust. It they announce AP instead of Versus, I think it'll be the final confirmation that Square doesn't give the slightest hint of a shit about its fans.

They're going to have more than just Versus coming up you know. I don't expect the original Agni concept to be an actual game though.

I thought it was pretty fresh, personally. I'd love to see it be an FF game.

Everything in Versus looks like it'd be perfect for the zeitgeist of 2005 - IMO.... :P but yeah I do want to finally have it in my hands.

That just means their target demographic is JP teenagers who watch bad anime.

And in order for Kitase to make a more mature game he kinda has to make something to begin with. He has been sitting in the "I don't even care" chair for quite a while and it really shows.

Nah. Like an instance based dungeon. 5/10 guys sign up and you go in an have a really hard fight against the former heroes and villians. Similar to WoW's Raids, alot of them the minor fights are just that, minor fights with several hard bosses.

This could be amazing way to farm for gear by having the taking more then a few and set them with gear that is similar to a class from XIV. It would also be a great way of having a fun thing to call back to past FF's with out it hurting the story of XIV's world.

I remember filling out an official survey after they released that trailer. It had questions about character design and the settings etc

So you are ready to complain if they announce AP instead of Versus ? Remember that all versus speculation was just that : speculation. It maynot show up as SE didn't promise it at all.

I filled it out too. I pretty much commented on Versus every chance I got. Nothing about that trailer struck me as a take on FF I would want to play, so I tried to make that as clear as possible.

I just really don't want another "sci fi with magic" setting, and the overpresence of guns and modern "war on terror" iconography really turned me off. It doesn't help that after Lightning and Serah, I would kind of like a male protagonist in an FF game again. It's been over a decade since FF had a good protagonist, and that was fucking Zidane.

So you are ready to complain if they announce AP instead of Versus ? Remember that all versus speculation was just that : speculation. It maynot show up as SE didn't promise it at all.

Like I said. Absolutely nothing about AP impressed or appealed to me. It was pretty. That was it. So yes, if that's all Square announces after explicitly saying that it wasn't even a game, I will complain. I don't play FF because of the name. I play it because something in the games appeals to me as a gamer. Versus is the only FF game since IX to speak to me in any serious manner.

I'm absolutely confident that they will show Versus at E3, if not only for the reason of Noctis Perfume coming two days after.

I personally won't complain (much) but I will walk away dissapointed in SE if they choose to go forward with Agni's, even more so ahead of Versus.

I want versus as much as any of you guys but I am prepared not to see it.Its STILL possible for SE to spend yet another E3 without Versus.I am well aware of all the rumours leading up to this but they arenot hard evidence.

I think people are ready to complain about anything. At this point we all expect Square to do something stupid.

There's no reason for them to even keep making it if they miss E3 2013. The costs will be utterly impossible to recoup, and the brand will continue to atrophy.

If Versus is coming out before any other new FF (which it should, I mean if it didn't, WTF?) then they'll focus on that first even if they have another game in the works since SE usually focuses on their upcoming games first. Though Versus info has been delayed in favor of games that were announced after it :x Still, I think this is the time for them to start focusing on it.

Personally I give it till TGS at most.

I just really don't want another "sci fi with magic" setting, and the overpresence of guns and modern "war on terror" iconography really turned me off.

I'm not sure if I loved that imagery per se... but it did contribute to it being fresh.

FF is at its best when its introducing things that would have once seemed alien in FF. I don't know if "war on terror" stuff is the right way to go, but I'm not opposed to it.

It's been over a decade since FF had a good protagonist, and that was fucking Zidane.
If I think about it... I agree with that. Can't say I loved Tidus, Yuna, Vaan, Lightning or Serah that much.

Lighting was a great design, though.

Having Square come out and say a new FF game will be at E3, means at least for me it's either brand new or Versus or disappointment.

I know Agni's is loved, but to me it was just Meh and the first time I've ever been able to say I flat don't want something when a FF related title was ever shown.

I didn't really get any war on terror iconography from it. Honestly, you could come away from the trailer thinking that they're the good guys. After all they're rushing in to stop a cult from summoning a huge demon with blood magic.

Mostly agree (I would be ok with a sci fi with magic setting). The setting and enemies in AP were a big turn off to me. The main character had a decent design, and I wouldn't mind seeing her in another game, but scrap the rest. It was pretty at least. That's roughly what I said on the survey, too.

I would be okay if Agni's turned out to be a new IP or side-game in the series, though.

I still can't understand how Kitase gave the Director's seat to Toriyama for FFXIII, and still does for the sequels, and seems like he'll do that for future titles. Kitase's games were really good.

Beautiful but rather hollow, and what's there is flawed...?

Hastily slapped together and lacking in any cohesion or sensibility. When you think of a hardened soldier, pink hair and miniskirts shouldn't really be on the list of "things to include". Also, that sword somehow managed to be even dumber in practice than it was in the trailers.

I would be fine with it as a side game, I guess. But not as a main game and definitely not in place of Versus. I especially don't want another female protagonist this soon after Lightning and Serah. They need to take some time to really think about how to write a good one instead of just trying again and again while the games continue to sell less and less. Hell, female protagonists are probably helping contribute to the games' weakening sales in the US, since a lot of American gamers just straight-up don't like to play as female characters to begin with.

I just felt the imagery of dudes in rags with assault rifles and cults in a desert setting really made me think of the war on terror. Perhaps we've just been inundated with games about it for so long that my brain is making logical jumps where it shouldn't, but that's how I felt when I saw it.

Considering its actual development time is shorter and development team a lot smaller for most of that time than, say, GTAV's, I don't think it's impossible for it to be profitable. Even Square Enix isn't so wasteful that they'd spend 7years developing it with a full staff, surely you don't believe that? Versus has been in development during a long period of time, but it hasn't been actively worked on for all that time and it wasn't until a couple of years ago that they started building up the team size, before that it was a relatively small team building up the basis of the game and the tech required to make all their plans possible. In the last 1-2 years XIV 2.0 has probably taken resources away from its development too.

It's been over a decade since FF had a good protagonist, and that was fucking Zidane.

I'd say it's only been since 2008*, because FFXI's Khrno was an amazing protagonist, best ever no doubt.

But FFXIV's Khrno wasn't that great, I think that was mainly due to the job system, there was something lacking, the character needed to be darker in my opinion.

Anyway, I agree with you, Zidane is a close second for best protagonist since all this time.

But how do we know the "cult" isn't some rebel faction, say, fighting for their freedom or something? The assault rifle doods could've been hired henchmen sent to "take care" of Agni's crew and their uprising.

Guess we don't share tastes. I like Lightning's design. Actually it's one of the few things about XIII that I think is basically perfect (also the music).

Oh, I know that it wasn't in full development for the entire time, but people CAN'T wait any longer. If the game misses an ENTIRE eight-year generation when it was announced before the console even came out, they've clearly done something wrong. People won't wait for it any longer, and the series has fallen so hard that they can't just keep delaying it. A lot of people I know who were hyped about it have given up on caring. Some have even stopped gaming entirely.

It's just been too long. They have to either release it or cancel it. We've been strung along enough.

Anyway, I agree with you, Zidane is a close second for best protagonist since all this time.

Going from him to Tidus was such a kick in the face. The series never recovered. =/

I think we're going to have to agree to disagree, yeah - I also didn't like XIII's music. Honestly, the more I think about XIII, the more I realize I really don't like anything about it except for Fang's character design and Sazh. And I really tried to like it, too. :(

I would treat Agni's Philosophy as a concept demo. There's a subtle hint in there regarding what will likely be a strong focus for a mainline Final Fantasy in the future.

But not as a main game and definitely not in place of Versus.

Oh yeah, for sure. There's no way I won't be somewhat disappointed if Versus doesn't show, but another new FF title does. I'll be somewhat conflicted because a new FF in general is pretty exciting, but... really want to get Versus finished and released before seeing other stuff. *shrug*

Hmm, were you on Cerberus? I think I remember that name from back in the day during FFXI, lol.

Also, Zidane is my favorite FF protagonist - one of the most likable ones, too.

At least we can find common ground in thinking that most of XIII sucked ;)

That's true. We just don't know. That was kind of my point. But honestly, right off the bat the Grand Master guy doesn't look particularly friendly.

As long as it's not replacing Versus, I can deal with it. :X So you think it'll be tied in with XVI, then?

The Toriyama/Nomura mix is not everyone's flavour indeed.

The funny thing is that I don't have anything against Nomura. The writing and characterization were what was wrong with X, not the designs. So again it's largely Toriyama's fault, it seems.

I really loved the Terra/Locke/Celes hero triad in VI, myself. Zidane felt like a logical evolution of Locke's character, which is probably why I enjoyed him so much.

Indeed we can.

That's true. We just don't know. That was kind of my point. But honestly, right off the bat the Grand Master guy doesn't look particularly friendly.

You and I seem to share a lot of FF interests...I thought the setup was extremely ambiguous and ,for that reason, interesting. I like the sharp contrast of the favella slums to the City at the end. You could tell there is a huge rift among the people of the world.Very interesting how much they delivered with in 4 minutes of the demo.
