Star Fox Assault Hype Thread

Has problems recognising girls
Well since the game is coming out in a few weeks, I figured it was nice to show some pre-love for a title that could dig and bury Star Fox Adventures.

Let's start with comparisons of the first ever promo pic to the finalised box art from *sic* IGN :D

I played it today through the rental program.

So pros:
Great Single Player
Good Graphics
Good Sound/Music (nice remixes)

Cons:
On foot missions are booty
Multiplayer gets old really fast (with 2 people at least)

How's the tank stage? is just a souped up foot mission with polygonal war machine and bigger guns where you rolled around and blow everything up? Is it like McBeth stage from SF64 where it constantly railed? :lol :D

Pro: Furries. :D

As much as I'd like to get this ASAP, the new Wario Ware for DS takes top priority. WHY MUST THEY COME OUT ON THE SAME DAY?

I'm definitely interested, but I won't go out and buy it on day one.

But on day 17, Wario will appear with a hot deal!

1- Any remixed songs from the first StarFox?
2- Is there an option to remove the aim marker like in StarFox 64?
3- Progressive scan support? Pro Logic II?

I only played the tank in multiplayer, and it controlled quite badly. I need somemore time with it, but I got out of the tank as soon as I got to the arwing.

I think you run faster than the tank, at least with falco anyways.

The dialogue is cheesy as ever.

I got this at hollywood video in the U-District in Seattle. I thought it wasn't out until Feb 1 for rental even. I got lucky they put it out today. Still unsure of a purchase though.

It hardly sounds bad. I can understand people passing if half the game was in the tank but that doesn't seem to be the case. It sounds like Namco did a solid job, not a horrible one.

Uhh... I don't see how any of the responses in this thread could lead someone to conclude that "Namco fucked it up." I have this on pre-order; I need to see some in-depth analysis of this game before it ships.

Well after Star Fox Adventures the franchise is probably dead anyways...so it probably doesn't matter if this new game sucks or not.

I really think Namco just was trying to make a "solid" game. I think they just figured if they made an OK game N-Bots will still buy it. If they succeeded in making a decent game, maybe I'll buy it down the road. But this doesn't look like anything special. Hopefully, I'm wrong. I did enjoy SF64.

Apart the foot missions Star Fox Assault seems to be a really good game. And as gamer who liked it´s predecessor SFAssault is a must-buy for me.

Well, I think the problem is that people are pining for a real sequel. One with all or most of the game centered around arwing battling. But then Namco had to try to inject some flavor into the game with the on foot missions. And, from everything we have read, these on foot sections lag in comparison to the stellar arwing battles. Is it too much to ask for a real Starfox sequel? Now we get to the jist of peoples problems with the game. Star Fox Adventures left a bad taste in many mouths. Not because it is a bad game. But it was a seperate game that got tacked on the Starfox license. Next we get a game that is closer to what Starfox is all about but not quite there yet. This is doubly disappointing considering one of Namco's Ace Combat teams developed this title. My hopes we were going to get a Starfox game the size and scope of an Ace Combat game and it didn't materialize.

How is this not a "real sequel?" Why are you claiming to be disappointed when you haven't played the game and the only person in this thread who has said it has a "Great Single Player"?

More importantly, how could you call Star Fox Adventures anything but a bad game. That a nice looking terd of a game. There was virtually nothing to SFA that wasn't shown in the Dinosaur Planet demo at E3 1999. It was a bad game that got tacked on the Starfox license to save its sorry ass.

didn't EGM give this new starfox a 6?

don't think its much better.

BUT IT DIDN'T PLAY LIKE HALO!

anyway, I'll wait for Gamespot and IGN's review to see if I will pick up this one. I am a fan of the first 2 starfox games, but I am not sure about this one :)

EGM review. On foot action diminishes the game. Besides, if you have been keeping tabs on this game over the past year all previews seemed to be pretty standoff-ish to the onfoot action. They wouldn't come out and say the on foot stuff was disappointing because it was a preview but the writing was on the wall and comes to fruition in the review.

I didn't say it was good or excellent either. I played through quite a bit of it awhile back. It was average. Starfox and Starfox 64 are two of my favorite games, so I'm going to be disappointed when these games get followed up with an adventure game and an above average game -which could have been excellent- if the game featured exclusive arwing battles.

don't get me wrong -- I want this game. I just find it funny that people will still trash Rare's effort -- when in the end, I think the review sites that people on GAF trust will give it lower scores than SFA got.

but they will still say starfox assualt is "better"

I'd say it's time for EAD to step in and make the next starfox game before it's too late.

Damn right! EAD developed Starfox 64? Namco should have taken a key from Starfox 64 on how to spice up mission structures.

It was shit. Pure shit. Getting half way was a mission. To complete it would be too much.

EGM gave it 8.0/8.0/6.0
NP gave it 4, 4, 5, 4, 4, out of 5

Those are definitely scores good enough to warrant a purchase for me. It's Star Fox, and it's a fast paced action game...What else could you ask for.

I won't be surprised if this game is crap, but I'll rent it if Blockbuster/Hollywood Video is indeed putting it on rental early

All I'm really hearing is that the tank controls aren't that good, although the ground missions aren't that bad. So Namco didn't fuck it up too far. Just another Rebel Strike.

If you can't take the bad for the good in Star Fox you miss out. That being said, it's rent before I buy for this game.

Agreed. They were gambling for this to work out as leasing out F-Zero to Sega did.

WHO HAS TIME TO READ THE THREAD WHEN I COULD BE PLAYING STARFOX ASSAULT!!! FOR THE NINTENDO GAMECUBE!!!!!

THE GAMECUBE!!! ASSAULT

Damn, any chance of stores breaking street date with this one? I gotta check some of my NY mom and pop shops.

Gamespot in their updated hands on impressions from a few weeks ago wrote that the controls were fixed.

*scratches head*

I thought it was in those impressions. There have been a couple of SFA threads in the past 2 months or so, and I vaguely recall one which had updated impressions where I specifically responded to it, acknowledging improved controls. I did a couple of searches, and could not find that thread here.

However, I did find a thread where you quoted your E3 impressions and specified what your problem was exactly, with the new controls. IIRC (obviously not a given, at this point) the updated controls had more to do with the on-foot stuff, NOT the flying stuff. I think the tilting is still out. I'll hit up a couple of more websites for impressions and see if I can find what I think I remember.

Sorry for the confusion.

Bah, looks like the Arwing controls are unchanged from the E3 demo, according to "Powerfro" at GameFAQs, who rented Star Fox Assault this past weekend.
the arwing is different because you spin by pressing L, brake with R, boost with Y, X to land(you have to be fairly low) C-stick up to do a loop and C-stick down to do a u turn.
Lots of info, impressions, and some spoilers in his GameFAQs thread.
