Star Fox Zero |OT| The Fox Awakens

Damn you Duke Togo.

I am enjoying it so far, the only negatives I have is I do not really enjoy the new vehicles at all. Gyro controls fine but moves SO SLOW and I always did not like Walker ever since it was introduced. Rather have Assault's ground missions.
However, the controls complaint is ballocks and controls much better than Splatoon IMO.

If we assume I'll get used to the controls and appreciate them, and liked SF64, should I get this game?

That would be quite the feat given that Splatoon is one of the best controlling games I've ever played.

I'm annoyed because I pre ordered on amazon on wednesday, but paid $4 extra for release date delivery, now it says they won't deliver it until monday.

Meanwhile if I put the game in my cart right now I can get it delivered for free tomorrow.

Stupid.

You'll probably like it. Can't say you'll love it but this is definitely calling back to Star Fox 64 for better and for worse.

man i really dont understand how people hate the controls

they feel perfectly fine to me and actually make precision aiming a lot better imo

Got a few of the secret missions to unlock, but that's me for tonight. Cant remember the last time I sat and binged on a game like this. Not had this much fun with a game in a while.

Damn is it good to have Star Fox back. I really hope this does well enough to keep the series alive. A sequel with a less rocky dev cycle could iron out some of the flaws and make it even better.

I really don't like this game very much.

I beat it once and while the normal on rails Arwing levels were absolutely great the other levels (which are just as frequent) were not at all fun. The Gyrochopter is just slow and boring, its levels are not at all challenging just tedious because you move so slowly it completely ruins the pace of the game.

The Landmaster didn't fair much better, its functional when its on rails (but slow as balls) but when you are in this snow level and have to fight the
spider boss
I was about ready to throw the gamepad because switching between the different modes and trying to look down at the controller to aim and back onto the screen to make sure you don't get hit isn't fun its aggravating as all hell.

What really ended up pissing me off though was the final boss...

So Andross himself isn't really hard at all but the entire fight fucks you over with the controls. First you are in the third person dog fighting camera at the start which to be clear is one of the worst aspects of the game it doesn't work well at all. Then once you stare at the gamepad to see the blue highlighted section (which is just a really stupid mechanic for a boss to have) which you can enter into you then go to the walker which is difficult to aim with because you'll want to use ZL and strafe and aim but the positions the hands go into when you do that makes it difficult to actually hit anything and then the targeting will get messed up and you have to reset it over and over again. Then he tries to grab you and its so freaking hard to actually hit the hand to stop him from grabbing you its better to just use bombs to stop it from happening because the hand moves to quickly to really hit the thing enough as you're being pulled towards it.

Then between the phases you either have to try and escape which doesn't always work because your positioning can get screwed up rather easily and if you don't get out in time you take damage. Either way once your outside he'll do this big spinning AOE which would be fine but you are forced back into the stupid ass third person dog fighting view and you can't see anything coming in front of you in time to actually dodge anything so unless your lucky or moving around a lot you are going to get hit. I don't think I actually fucked anything up in any of the fight, any damage I took was because of control issues which is really really irritating.

Honestly I think I can compare Star Fox to Sonic at this point when your going fast (arwing on rails levels) its really great but the game tries to slow you do with other gameplay options (every other vehicle) so often it ruins what otherwise could be a really great experience.

One of my favorite levels from this game is what is basically a remake of area 6 and its great because for once you are going really fast so its hard to dodge and its honestly challenging to not get hit by anything while also trying to kill as many things as possible, its a truly great level (until the boss which is ruined a fairly tedious fight in all range mode) and I wish there had just been a lot more of that then what we got with the god awful third person camera and the other vehicles which just aren't very fun to play.

I'm still early, but I'm liking the game a lot. The controls are fine as I played a fair amount of Splatoon. Takes some getting used to looking back and forth between the screens though.

I'll never understand why you guys do this to yourselves.

I just picked it up from one of the eight + different stores that have it, after work.

Yeah my advice is to not really look at your Gamepad unless you need a precision shot. The target reticle still shows up if you are consistently shooting which you would know if played Star Fox 64.
Played about half of the planets and I am warming up to Walker a bit. It is tricky to get used on controlling it.
Star Fox is back baby!

So after playing a bunch and going back and playing some older SF I think this might be more fun than Assault but not as fun as 64. The on foot stuff in Assault isn't nearly as bad as I remember it being. I've only gone back and replayed like the first 3 missions of Assault, first one is all good old on rails flying, second is on foot then landmaster all range and third is on foot then Star Wolf dogfight.

64 is still the king and I can't really think of many bad bits from that game.

I ain't got shit to do tonight, and the last (and only) Starfox game I played was the original on the SNES, which of course I loved... But that was 20 years ago! Lulz. Keep going back and forth and whether to just "do it" or forget about the game and go back to my large backlog.

I played a few stages and The game seems fun, but the controls are weird. I don't understand why they have to have motion and stick controls on at the same time. Just let me choose one or the other. The only while holding ZR toggle isn't much good when you're always locking on to stuff. The main gimmick is really the dual screen gameplay anyway. I did just play the first robot chicken stage and that was rough. So far it seems like fun game that would have been really awesome with wiimote and nunchuck controls.

Prime discounted the game down to $50 and that's too good to pass up. Thankfully my copy got here in the afternoon but still sucks for those still waiting. I remember amazon had similar trouble with shipping out Xenoblade X SEs so I just cancelled mine and got it from BB instead.

These boss fights that require you to dodge attacks you can see on the TV while aiming with what you can see on the tablet are real shit. They are killing my enjoyment of this game.

It's not about the gyro controls, it's about looking up and down constantly like an asshole, or about doing gyro in one direction while trying to steer in another. Circle strafing is a real strain in this game and it is a huge hassle.

Just played the first mission. Gyro controls aren't bad, but there is literally no reason they couldn't have mapped that to the 2nd stick as an alternate control scheme. I suppose it'll be better for higher level play when I get used to it, but man, what a rough start.

They are pointless in normal Arwing stages, but they are mandatory (and horrible) in boss encounters (or anyplace else with a fixed cinematic camera angle).

I've only played a little but I already wish they would just patch a Wiimote + nunchuck option where you can just quick switch to cockpit for those instances.

Ugh, I'm so torn. I love some parts of this game, but sometimes the dual screens just do not work in the way you want them to, especially in the free range dogfights. Doing a somersault and trying to then find and hit an enemy is an exercise in frustration.

Yeah, I'm not really seeing why the gamepad was important to this at all. There's already a button to lock on, if you zoomed into cockpit view when you did it'd be pretty similar since you can't be focused on both at once. Co-op wouldn't work, but I don't think that's a huge deal.

It's still fun, the controls themselves aren't an issue. It's just the cockpit shenanigans.

Now I'm two games behind on the Wii U (Pokken Tournament and Star Fox Zero). Both sealed sitting on my shelf. I'll play Star Fox first but I still need to finish FE Fates: Revelations. Almost done with it, so it won't be too long.

I look forward to it. I'm going to come into this game with no expectations and get ready to re-learn the controls altogether. I think that is going to be the best way.

My control complaint has to do with barrel rolling with the right stick, it's difficult for me to double tap it quick enough to deflect bullets in time. Otherwise I'm having a grand time......my boyfriend gets off soon so we can play in co-op, certainly most excited to play it with him ☺️

It feel more necessary or that it belongs if the cockpit view was like an R2-D2 or turret type of thing where it could shoot in a different direction. The way it is in the game is kind of dumb.

Sector Gamma... my god that was fantastic.. I had to retry a couple tries but it kind of forced me to focus and really use the controls to their fullest.

Yes, if it was a 360 degree firing method that worked no matter where your craft was facing, it would be great. Having it bound to an invisible hemisphere originating from the nose of your ship means you are constantly trying to turn the stick while twisting your arms to get your shot, and then you wind up overdoing it and driving straight into the boss or whatever.

I turned on "gyro only when shooting" because it makes normal stages more playable, but it makes the cinematic-angle boss fights impossible because if you don't remember to tap ZR then you are just twisting in your chair for nothing.

you can flick the stick left then right or right then left and it will work instead of double tapping one direction

So I finally "finished" the game. Can optional paths/routes only be unlocked in arcade mode now or also in the normal game? And for arcade mode, have the perfect route for the highest score been found yet?

People are comparing this to kid icarus uprising? the controls are that bad? That comparison alone is putting me off and I am glad I didn't impulse pre-order,

The gyro copter sections are absolutely terrible. I've done 4 missions so far and more than 50% of my time has been in the gyro copter. Who thought this would be fun?

For this being my first Star Fox experience, I find that when sticking with the motion controls, the better I got with the games control scheme, the better the game got. I also like the vehicle variety, along with possibly completing the game in a multitude of different ways.

I do hope that we get a direct sequel, as I want more dog fighting/arcade action! This game is a shit-ton of fun, and I'm so glad that I picked it up today.

Man, just beat the game. That was harder than I thought it was going to be.

This game was the sequel to Star Fox 64 I always wanted. Maybe it's just because I have immense nostalgia for 64, but I think the reviews were way off on this game.

Just played through story mode once, and I enjoyed it.

I think the motion controls are fine, but the big issue here is when the game forces you out into this weird third person perspective on the main screen far away from your ship. It makes it difficult to learn a new encounter when they force you into this perspective... why doesn't it operate like the rest of the game and just have this view activate only when holding ZL? I think it's a weird decision since it makes things difficult to understand at least the first time you try a fight... On subsequent playthroughs I can totally see myself adapting to it though.

The final boss was giving me a lot of trouble but I finally managed to beat it. The ending
was super nostalgic (considering it was basically lifted from StarFox 64) but I'll admit I teared up when I saw the dedication at the end.

I do think the game grows on you whether in spite of the controls or because of them. I just wonder if this might do well enough that we get an actual sequel that doesn't deviate from the flow of the game (ie - Assault's criminally few Arwing levels, Command's weird strategy elements) without just retelling the origin story for a third time.
