Star Fox Zero |OT| The Fox Awakens

This has 19 (out of ?) songs and the quality is pretty good.

Thanks, sounds very good indeed!!! :D

Too bad many of these track are too short, but I'll take that for the moment.

EDIT: Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you, I love the quality. There's even the classic Corneria theme! :O

Campaign #2: Team Cloudrunner
Awesome, return of the best species from Sauria.
latest

59 which includes the jingles.

But man, these are short D: I'd love for them to at least loop twice. Best quality I've heard so far though.

Found more. Here is 28 and most of them are the 30 min versions. Star Wolf will be playing until I get off work.

The two you are missing. The first search light when first entering the main area. Hack it off, hack it on, then hack it off again to not get detected. It's bs but there it is.

The second is in the left portion of the reactor. High up there is a search light just going back and forth at a wall. There is a single flame thrower below to its right. Hack that light off, hack it on, then hack it off again to not get detected.

I knew it had something to do with those lights but I never thought to turn them on again. I just blew them up with bombs. A bit of a questionable design choice to me.

I just checked, the light is different and you don't need to turn it off again as it won't detect you.

Went back to this game after playing Ratchet & Clank on PS4. I must say that I prefer the graphics and control of Star Fox Zero. Gyro controls are lightning fast, accurate and more immersive. Going back to traditional controls felt slow and clunky. And of course, 60 fps should be the bare minimum in action games. 30 fps doesn't cut it to me.

This is turning out to be my GOTY so far. This and Splatoon are setting the precedent by which all fast-paced action games should be measured.

Interesting preference of Graphics, I really like Ratchet's look though. It's a gorgeous game.

Star Fox is really clean though, and if it looks clean now, it'll probably look clean for long time.

My copy came in today. I played about 4 or 5 missions, up to the Wolf fight.

I actually found the default controls with full motion pretty intuitive. The moment they really clicked for me was when I had Wolf on lock and he moved behind me--I somersaulted looking at the tv, then switched to the gamepad because I knew I'd end up right behind. Worked perfectly and I could fine tune the shot once I was on his tail. I also re-played Corneria a couple extra times and hit 293 so I think I can deal with the controls.

So far, I think the combination of lock-on and gamepad makes the dogfights and bosses much, much better than in 64, since you can basically circle strafe enemies now without losing sight of them. Aquarosa is a good example of how this can be used. I even think the walker and gyrowing are fine, but some of the control difference between them are frustrating (e.g. I have up/down inverted in the arwing, but up/down in the gyrowing is standard and can't be changed).

I actually think this game is harder to play when you make it so motion only activates when shooting. I like having motion on at all times so I can line up shots before I start shooting. Works beautifully, so I stick with all motion all the time. :-)

Tonight I replayed all of the sector missions (Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Omega), as well as Fortuna and Fichina. And my appreciation deepened for all six levels!

Sector Alpha is thrilling once you realize that one bomb can take out each gunship. When you see a gunship lowering its turrets, swoop in and bomb it to save an allied ship! There's just so much variety in this course, the on-rails part going up and over the gunships and through waves of enemy drones, all of which are easy to see thanks to the bright pink nebula in the background. Then when you dive inside the ship, shooting up the mechs in the hangar bay and turn into the walker, you begin one of my favorite sections in the entire game. I adore storming the ship interior with the walker. Lots of robots to shoot up here, with some gentle platforming up and over barriers and across lifts, as well as dashing past laser pillars and barriers. Strafing around the reactor core at the end while using the cockpit view to stay focused on the pods is also satisfying.

In Sector Beta, I didn't notice the title card for the shield ship before — I now see it's called "Granby." Again, a great scenario with your dear friend Bill fighting alongside you, and then slipping past Granby's shield and boarding it with the walker to destroy the generator, before making a hasty escape and helping Kat and Bill fight Star Wolf.

Sector Gamma's copperhead missiles make for a great set-piece, with the back-and-forth between dismantling them one section at a time, trying to line up shots on their spinning turrets while dodging their lasers and persistent enemies on your tail, and then returning to the Great Fox to quickly shoot off the drones.

And then Sector Omega is just a rush, hurtling through the debris field at F-Zero-like speeds. Try switching the cockpit view to the TV if you want to melt your mind. The showdown with the attack carrier at the end is also a good time.

With Fortuna, I learned it pays to slow down for nearly the entire level. Keep braking so you can shoot the spiny caterpillars and the flytraps and the flying worms. The boss, Dodora, looks amazing on the TV, trailing you while spitting fireballs, or fleeing from you while shooting lasers from its tail.

And then Fichina starts with a great all-range battle against all kinds of drones, including bombers. You can switch freely between the arwing and the walker, and when the striders appear, they roll out the landmaster and gravmaster. Seeing Mother Strider climb over the distant mountains and lumber into view is amazing spectacle. The fact you can start attacking it even as it crests the hills is equally impressive.

I also tried the first Roadmaster mission tonight. A fun vehicle with rollicking physics, in a wonderful mission with a great layout (set in the ruins of the Mother Strider on Fichina) and lots of variety. Honestly would've fit right in with the campaign — they just would've needed to come up with a story reason for why you're there collecting whatever.

I also replayed the Hunter mission, where Fox faces his rival Wolf on Fichina. While I beat it in one or two tries the first time I played it, tonight Wolf was thoroughly wrecking me. That lightning tornado is no trifling matter! He's also incredibly aggressive, pulling multiple somersaults in a row in an attempt to stay behind you.

The vehicle view in target mode looks incredible at times — one time my Arwing was skimming the ground and Wolf's Hunter form was galloping right alongside it! Makes me wish WiiU had a dedicated Share button for capturing the last 15 minutes of footage like on PS4. :-)

Man I love your enthusiasm for this game. It took me a few levels, and I haven't finished yet, but I'm getting more and more in tune with the flow between the two screens and the feeling of the ship. Hopefully people read things like this and decide to stick with it, it's really a beautiful thing that we can still get games like this.

I finally thought I got the hang of the controls and could play well, and then I reached the final boss for the first time... Am I crazy or is that fight borderline broken in some parts? Especially when he shoots purple lasers everywhere... I'm not even sure which screen to look at as both point of views are pretty much useless.

You look at the TV and fly outwards going up and down when needed. It's not too hard.
I did die like 5 times, but that was mostly due to standing still while he hit me.
Co-op? lol I'm not sure
Maybe. Though he could've said an easy mode. I think he specifically mentioned invincibility

Hey, guys, Miyamoto said there was an "easy" mode. Something that caused a lot of controversy....where is it?
I've personally never seen it but apparently it's the typical Super feature where if you die a bunch of times on a level you're able to use an invincibility mode. No idea how it works or affects scoring.

When he shoots the laser's just fly to the bottom before it starts. There you only have to worry about 2 of them that are perfectly spaced out, one up and one down, with ample time to prepare to move if you watch the tv. For the other attack people have trouble with when he tries to pull you in with his hand just pull back on the left stick and it greatly slows the speed he pulls you at.

I decided to go through Corneria again with the 1st person view on the tv and found myself actually physically looking in the direction I wanted to aim in like I was actually in the cockpit. It's just too good.

I got all the stages unlocked and made a couple of passes at arcade mode. Not really a d fan of that mode so but sure I'll keep trying since it only unlocks
sound test
which I don't care about.

Going to take a break from it for a bit, but plan to at least get enough medals to unlock the challenges. I have the Amiibo so I don't need to get all 70, just 50.

I also started up Star Fox Guard and had a blast playing through the first planet.

Where the fuck is the third (or first) medal ring on Area 3's alternate

I had accidentally spoiled myself on area 3's main mission searching for it and now I'm kinda pissed because I got spoiled on something I DIDN'T need help on, and still have no clue where to look.

It's under the droppod (Black Andross Crate) near the start

I really cannot stress how bad the hidden levels have been so far (and I liked the main game). Aquarosa was a bullshit boss fight, and now this asteroid field crap. Man, do they get any better? Seriously, Asteroid field is the worst Starfox level I've ever played.

The asteroid levels (yes, there are two!) have been growing on me, but they're pretty hectic at first since it's an on-rails escort mission where the target you're protecting is huge and shit flies in from all directions.

Aquarosa, on the other hand, is one of the best set-pieces in the series. It's a boss battle that becomes better as you get better. Some people have cleared it in just over 50 seconds. Using the Black Arwing, someone cleared it in just over 30 seconds. o_o

Definitely challenging at first, though.

I generally like aquarosa, but given how reception to the two satellite missions is generally positive, the good hidden levels outweigh the bad, particularly the two hidden star wolf fights and salvadora.

The only two hidden missions I feel "whatever" about are the asteroid ones. Even then, the second asteroid level features a pretty cool boss.

Beyond that, you have the AMAZING 1v1 Wolf fight, the Salvadora mission where you play as you-know-who, the previously mentioned Aquarosa, a fantastic 1v2 Star Wolf fight with special weapons, the wonderful on-rails level in the space colony, and the arwing/walker speed run of Zoness — a nice way to test your knowledge of the map after methodically exploring it in the gyrowing.

A special shoutout to the 1v1 Wolf fight. I don't know whether Platinum had any influence on that fight, but it's a true rival battle that pushes you to the limit and truly tests your skills. Wolf is fast, aggressive and merciless. It feels richly rewarding to finally defeat him.

All in all, I found the hidden levels very worthwhile. Like I said, the asteroid levels are the only two that don't feel special, but even they have their redeeming quality, presenting a unique challenge.

And I feel like I can safely say I love all 12 main missions. Area 3 and Zoness are probably the ones I replay the least, but I appreciate them, as well.

Still trying to decide my favorites. Sector Alpha and Sector Beta are up there, with Fichina and Fortuna fast approaching.

So even if I don't like this asteroid level, keep going It gets better? Good to know
Yeah, the asteroid levels are the low point (and I think even those will improve for you if you revisit them in time).

If you like what came before them, you should like what comes after them. :-)

I'm enjoying this game a lot, the feel of flying, shooting and the music are amazing. I see a lot of people complaining about Aquarosa, the level is challenging, but it's very fun.

Edit: The
Peppy
mission is epic, I forgot the name of the mission, but I remember Peppy's line:
"It never pays to underestimate Star Fox"

Yeah, it's one of my favorites. I think my favorite boss battle is 1v1 Wolf, though, since I can't consistently beat it, and I love the challenge. I also like revisiting Salvadora. "DO A BARREL ROLL!"

I swear, I'm feeling so conflicted about this game. I've been holding off on buying because of the general feedback I've heard and read from reviewers and podcasts. However, I find myself coming back to this topic multiple times a day and wanting to buy the game. You guys are all filled with such awesome enthusiasm for the game that really almost convinces me to run to the store every time.

Do you like Star Fox 64? but with a control scheme that needs 10 minutes to learn, but hours to master?

At least rent it. I was a huge skeptic going in, and had like no hype, but WHOA. This game is quickly becoming one of my favorite Nintendo titles. Like, ever.

I was never really into past Star Fox titles because I found them very limiting. In the old games, you'd fly one way trying to dodge something and be unable to shoot something that just passed by you. But this game solves all of that. Star Fox Zero gives you 100x more control over everything — shooting one way while flying another, tracking what's in front of you and behind you at the same time. The level of engagement between you and the game has increased dramatically.

It's overwhelming at first, but you have to approach it like you're learning how to fly a real aircraft. You are starting from scratch. This is like a new genre of game, and it must be learned, just like how people learned tank controls for survival horror at one point, or command inputs for traditional fighting games. But if you go in with an open mind, it's surprisingly intuitive, and you will only get better.

And when it clicks... Well holy shit. It's just AMAZING.

I also don't think Jim's ego would allow him to soften his stance if, say, he played a few more hours and the controls clicked. At least, he wouldn't admit it in public!
This actually happened with the Souls series. He hated Demon's Souls, but eventually came around to it over time and ended up becoming a big fan of the series.

I tried to list out how to get all the medals and how to unlock each hidden stage. I didn't get all of the medals, and anything I don't know has question marks. Feel free to fill in any missing info (it'll help me too, lol).

Each level has five medals, which are:
- a medal for getting the top score or time
- a medal for clearing the stage with a Mission Accomplished
- a medal for collecting all three special Gold Medal Rings or all ten Silver Coins
- two other medals for doing various things in the stage that I call "stage medals".

The levels below are listed in the order they appear on the Score List screen.

Fly inside the boss after destroying half of it
- Top Score: 300 hits

Level Sector a (Frenzied Firefight):
- Stage:
Right when Peppy is being attacked, you'll see an enemy ship to the right. Fly above it and destroy the enemy at the the back of the ship's top.
- Stage:
Inside the ship, destroy every enemy in the first room.
- Gold Medal rings:
Inside the ship, stay on the elevator and go to the top floor. Get the first ring, then run into the tunnel toward the boss and collect the next two rings before they disappear.

Destroy all the enemy battleships before they shoot down any friendly ships
- Top Score: 300

Instead of going to the underground base, fly up to the tower and hack the panel in Walker mode.
- Top Score: 220

- Gold Medal rings:
One is right by the Great Fox's exhaust pipe, the others are to the left and above the Great Fox. The medal is above the Great Fox cockpit.

Defeating the missiles quickly will help.

- Gold Medal rings:
Near the beginning of the stage, Peppy takes the upper path. Take the lower path and you will see the rings. The first ring is to the left. BEFORE getting the first ring, start making a SHARP turn to the right by tilting the right analog stick to the right. Braking won't work here.

For the missing ones, going off one's I've collected.
Corneria: Stage:
It's in the first spider pod

Area 3:
You have to disable all 6 walkers via hacking after restoring the colony's power. Quick to do in the arwing.

Titania: Stage:
Early on there's a platform with a gold ring on it, go to the empty one next to it for the medal
Stage:
It shows up near the portal leading to the Salvadora
Mission Accomplished:
Destroy all the worms and spiderbots I believe

Fichina: Stage
Shoot down Leon
Rings:
Some of the spiderbots drop them
MA:
Kill all the spiderbots

Fortuna: Stage:
Shoot the Monarch Dodora near the end of phase one to make it spawn
Rings:
Save Katt for the 1st, the left most flytrap of the group of 3 has one then go into walker mode where Slippy does for the last one
Mission Accomplished:
Kill all the flytraps

Sector Omega: MA:
No damage before reaching the boss apparently

Corneria 2: Stage:
The gigarilla needs to destroy one of the buildings
Rings:
I don't know if there's a specific trigger for it but they all appear at the end of phase 1. Might need everyone alive or something
MA:
Destroy the gigarilla's chest and palms

Venom: Stage:
It was somewhere on the planet in phase 1
Stage:
Complete phase 2 without triggering James to guide you
MA:
Finish off Andross during the escape

Satallite Mission 1 (Colony): Rings:
The first on is under the andross container near the start. The other two are in relatively plain site before you go underground
Since scoring can be hard on this one if you shoot Andrew's shield generators with a charge shot if the blast radius hits the other one you'll get +1 and they're durable enough to take two hits.

Apologies if this question has been asked and subsequently answered in this thread. Just don't have the time to look through. Considering purchasing game but I've read it controls kind of awkwardly with the game pad acting as the aiming reticle?! If that is the case, are there alternative control options? I'm playing alone and I'd much prefer playing with analogue stick to control arwing and other analogue stick controlling my ships aim. Please tell me it's available...

There is only one way to control the arwing and it works really well. It's a bit hard at first because it's a unique system but I can assure you that it's objectively better than a traditional analog control.

Finally managed to just barely snag those asteroid field medals. That black arwing is so close...

Wait, the gift of getting all medals is the fucking black airwing?

What a cool gift for everyone that already has Falco amiibo, thanks Nintendo /s
Is that really the big hard to get surprise? Please, tell me theres more.

For the missing ones, going off one's I've collected.

Thanks for this! I would have never found a couple of those... I may update my post to add your info (and credit you, of course!).

Regarding Sector Omega's Mission Accomplished, it's actually much easier than it sounds, lol. You don't even need to shoot at all, though it's quite a bit easier if you shoot at certain times, like during Peppy's fork and Slippy's fork. But if you focus solely on flying, it isn't hard.

You will also unlock the Retro Arwing, and you can use both at anytime without using the respective amiibo. If you ask me, more of the Wii U games that have amiibo functionality (with certain exceptions) need to do this.

Level Sector B (Reunited with a Friend):
- Stage: ???
- Stage:
After you breach the ship's shield, destroy every cannon on the ship.
- Gold Medal rings:
Each Star Wolf member will leave behind a ring after they're defeated.
- Mission Accomplished:
Defeat Wolf before he shoots down Peppy.
- Top Score: 260

Level Titania (A Fox in the Desert):
- To unlock:
Fight Star Wolf slowly in Sector B
- Stage: ???
- Stage: ???
- Gold Medal rings:
Midway through the level is a hole with a silver ring outside of it. Enter it and you will be in a chamber with gold rings.
- Mission Accomplished: ???
- Top Score: 320

Level Fichina (Frostbitten Fray)
- Stage: ???
- Stage: ???
- Gold Medal rings: ???
- Mission Accomplished: ???
- Top Score: 120

Level Fortuna (Dangerous Skies):
- To unlock:
Get a Mission Accomplished in Sector B
- Stage:
Near the beginning of the stage, a medal is on top of a plant that forms an arch.
- Stage: ???
- Gold Medal rings:
One is inside of one of the Venus Flytrap-like plants that you see in a group of three.
- Mission Accomplished: ???
- Top Score: 200

Titania: Stage:
Early on there's a platform with a gold ring on it, go to the empty one next to it for the medal
Stage:
It shows up near the portal leading to the Salvadora
Mission Accomplished:
Destroy all the worms and spiderbots I believe

Fichina: Stage
Shoot down Leon
Rings:
Some of the spiderbots drop them
MA:
Kill all the spiderbots

Fortuna: Stage:
Shoot the Monarch Dodora near the end of phase one to make it spawn
Rings:
Save Katt for the 1st, the left most flytrap of the group of 3 has one then go into walker mode where Slippy does for the last one
Mission Accomplished:
Kill all the flytraps

Sector Beta
Stage:
It's on the allied cruiser to your right when you start the stage. When you enter all range mode turn around and fly over it to make it appear.

Titania
Mission Accomplished:
In addition to what El Odio said, you also need to kill all of the alpacas (those things you need to hack back in Area 3).

Fichina
Stage:
You need to kill thirty enemies before time runs out to make Leon appear.
Stage:
You need to destroy all of the legs of the boss before they regenerate.

Fortuna
Stage:
That one that appears above the vine only does so an enemy does a loop around it. I believe the enemy that does this is the third snake so make sure you don't kill it.

I've come to a realization. The problem isn't All Range Mode. It was never All Range Mode.

The problem is this god DAMN Cinematic/"Target" camera that CONSTANTLY pans while you're trying to aim. That's what causes almost every single frustrating situation for me. It rarely even adds anything. The only time I have trouble with the gyro controls are because my ship isn't moving like I expect it to, because the goddamn camera has a mind of it's own.

The game desperately needs an option to turn that stupid thing off. It ruins almost every boss fight and is a huge "HEY FUCK YOU I'M RUINING YOUR CONTROLS" for a few seconds at least in every level when they have something to show you. Remove that and almost every problem with the controls is gone. Change the "hey look here" into a picture in picture and boom, you're golden (the gamepad actually already does this for important events)

The target camera is seriously like trying to compensate for a drifting right analog stick in an FPS. It is horrible.
