Wow, not bad!
After working on the visual effects for it for almost a year now it's quite cool to see some good reviews- it's almost impossible to tell when working on blockbusters hah! Seems like people like the visuals as well.

I love them! I was watching some clips of the warp scenes from Star Trek movies and I love the ones from 2009/LID that shot they show of the Franklin escaping flames or whatever looks badass awesome work!

I loved both 09 Star Trek and Into Darkness, so I will definitely be seeing Beyond.
Where are the great Trek movies hiding?

I have never been a fan but i did enjoy the first Star Trek movie a lot, the Abrams one that is. I have yet to see Into Darkness. How is it?

Sounds good so far, might see in theater. We saw 2009 in theaters and enjoyed it but only got to ID later on blu. Liked most of that except for some of the last quarter. Aside from it simply being a new Star Trek, it is largely goodwill to the cast--especially Pine as Kirk--that I'm paying attention to the third installment.

Looking good! Into Darkness wasn't terrible nor excellent, but enjoyable to watch. I totally forgot that this movie was coming this summer. Don't even remember much of what was shown in the trailers, so it'll be fun going in blind.
Usually I end up spoiling the general plot of movie if I watch preview trailers, so I try to resist the urge to do so. I remember seeing War of the Worlds with my dad while having no idea what it was about. Nearly had a panic attack during the first attack scene. Good stuff...lol

I'm not sure which of them I'd call "great," but '09, II, VI and IV are at the very least "good" flicks.
Into Darkness is pure unimaginative garbage, easily the worst movie in the franchise.
Yes, worse than Final Frontier.

What a relief! The dummer movie season has been disappointing... I hope Bourne and Sucide Squad are great also.
Fun. This movie is just damn fun.
I think I liked it more than the first one and Into Darkness.
Simple story but done really well. Every time Chekov was on screen I felt sad...

Sulu being gay controversy. You see the husband and all they do is hug. It was good to see some progress finally but it was kinda an afterthought.

At first the trailers looked really unimpressive, but I think it was either the most recent or second most recent trailer that had me going, "this actually looks pretty good!". Glad to hear it seemingly turned out that way.
I don't get this. ID wasn't great, but it was well made and at least somewhat engaging, unlike several other Trek films...

As someone who walked out of ID thinking, "Well, that was dumb," it still feels like it gets too much hate.
I would argue that. Into Darkness still came out feeling like one of the better entries in the franchise.
The bar isn't raised very high.
I'll allow it.
Into Darkness is a lot like Revenge of the Fallen and Amazing Spiderman 2. Which makes sense since they were all penned by the same hack writers.
Can we not do this, please?
Even if you dislike Into Darkness, saying it's as bad as Revenge of The Fallen is some absurd hyperbole.

Right. But doesn't make STID any less than absolutely terrible, just ROTF even more terrible.
You might as well just stop there. You roughly have seen the top three Star Trek films.
There are a few other decent entries. It's all a mixed bag from there out.

There are only really 2 great Star Trek movies (2 and 4) and some average movies (3, 6, maybe 1 and 8 if you are feeling generous). The rest are watchable junk at best.

Saw the trailer yesterday in a big cinema, just love the crap out of the visuals. Has that grounded and physical feel that only Blomkamp seems to dabble in.
Which says a lot, considering Blomkamp doesn't have that many different effects on the screen at once, relying on the surroundings.

I was going to try and argue, but looked at 2013 and it was like the year of terrible blockbusters. If you were saying the Into Darkness was the best of a bad group, then you definitely have a point. Ironman 3, Hobbit 2, Man of Steel, World War Z, Thor 2. Bleh. Though flawed, I do prefer Gravity and The Wolverine.
Call me crazy, but I liked all of those movies you listed!!!

Really fucking happy that it's getting great reviews. Always been more of a fan of Star Trek than Star Wars (really like both though) and happy this is a good one. I hope the send off for Chekov is good.

It wasn't well made at all, it was a bad movie that looked nice. J.J. Abrams' movies tend to be like that given that he is a brilliant filmmaker who knows how the camera works.
The movie from the start is already a pretty goofy conspiracy plot. Given Trek's penchant for the goofy and dopey, that was probably an alright story to want to tell. But then they add Khan and turn him into a generic villain. Even if you have never watched ST: II and don't realize how much they've watered down the character, anyone with even the remotest understanding of character development should be able to see what an empty character he is. The flick just goes off the rails once he appears.
Into Darkness is a movie with such poorly written characters that it requires phoning in Leonard Nimoy to deliver a speech explaining what a threat Khan is. And that's not unique to Kirk. Pike has to speechify to Kirk to tell him what he needs to learn. Khan himself speechifies about how bad he is. And that's just one figure.
I remember the Film Crit Hulk article about the film talked about the rise of "convoluted" blockbusters. And that's what Into Darkness was.
It also isn't among the better entries. It's at the bottom of the barrel next to Final Frontier, Insurrection and Nemesis. Where you order Into Darkness among those other three is a debate, but otherwise, it belongs right next to them.
I'm really excited to see what they do with Beyond. Hopefully those problems don't crop back up again.
