Star Trek (January 2017 TV Series) News and Speculation Thread of Boldly Streaming

The Abramsverse decision would still make a lot of sense from a marketing perspective, depending on which direction marketing wants to take this. I don't say this often about things, but I can admittedly actually see CBS wanting to cater more toward the hardcore crowd at first and thus avoiding that tango, though -- after all, the high streaming rates of their currently-existing Trek catalog has a lot to do with this new series getting the greenlight.

But I'm not optimistic about that. I think the Abramsverse may still be selected, because it's in and it's hot (to average filmgoers [and me but what do I know most Trek hardcore hate it]) and it's known to loads of people who have never given the older content a shot and never will.

There's always the chance the show and its supplemental material will just actively avoid making mention of any of this, and it'll play by its own rules and set itself apart from everything else but not even do so in a way that dictates that it must be in its own universe. There are so many paths to take here and it's important to remember that there are so few of us (relatively speaking) who ever use terms like "Abramsverse" to begin with.

Also the fact the last post of the first page has someone saying "it can't be any worse..." means that is totally going to be quoted ad nauseum when news starts flowing and some folks are undoubtedly apathetic toward it. Heh.

Make it so.

I sincerely hope they'll do away with that hideous Enterprise-E, should they decide to use the Enterpise as a setting.

Not an update on the show itself, but just in case anyone was still holding out hope that The Shat would be in Beyond, here's the last straw.

“There was never a conversation. It would have been interesting to see what [the writers'] fertile imaginations could have done with somebody who is 20 years older than when [my version of] Captain Kirk died, and how they would have explained the difference in appearance.

But that never came up. I’m sure they must have thought of it one time or another, but I never had a substantial conversation about replaying the role.”

So Im watching Next Gen for the first time now and Im about to watch the S3 finale.

I was a little interested in this when it was announced but now after next gen Im really excited for it. This series is fantastic.

Glad you're enjoying it. There's a ton of great TNG episodes ahead of you, too.

I'm a broken record on this but strongly consider hopping into DS9 afterward (or even go the whole geeky nine yards and start watching it around 6x14 of TNG which is when it premiered haha) because while it starts off weak it really blossoms into a wonderful more serialized Trek show.

I'm getting Gaf nostalgia now

You're going to love the rest of the seasons, season 4, 5 and 6 are TNG at its absolute prime.

So how much of JJ's Star Trek will find the way to the new series? The safety belts like fixed one of the most cringeworthy aspects of the original Star Trek series. It would be also nice if computers aren't exploding anymore after a hit.

Hopefully we'll get some of the energy and flashyness, but also have characters who sometimes walk rather than run down corridors. The best of both worlds
part 2

I'd like a less harsh lit sterile looking bridge.

It will indeed be nice to see Star Trek letting characters walk at a normal pace again, regardless of the overall quality of the production.

I kind of want to spruce the OP up with some GAF-made pics, but I have the Photoshop skills of a lifelong Buddhist ascetic. Is there someone willing to volunteer (and of course be credited for their genius)?

Send me a pm

Its funny when you see shows like 24 or Alias (Spy show) and these people are doing important work trying to catch terrorists and its so damn dark nobody can see anything. But it looks cool.

There was actually a pretty funny moment on voyager where someone took over the ship and was wondering why it was so dark on the bridge (For some reason the lights go dim during red alert).

Real curious on how a new Star Trek would look in a post smartphone world. My main reason for not wanting Abramsverse.

Then again they could really fuck it and do the unspeakable
Abramsverse TNG
.

I was thinking about what an Abramsverse series could do, and I realized that they could use the destruction of Vulcan for social commentary.

With so few Vulcans left, the Romulans start pushing for Unification (the rejoining of Vulcan and Romulus), but on their terms. We saw in TOS that people started to distrust Spock after they realized that Vulcans and Romulans looked similar, so with the Romulans becoming more aggressive toward the Federation and staging events to convince the Vulcans that reason dictates that joining them is better, people in the Federation could start distrusting the Vulcans. Before, there was no danger of the Vulcans leaving the Federation, but this reaction leads to some going through with joining the Romulans.

I've often thought that if it's Abramsverse one of the core things I'd love to see is a depiction of severely weakened Vulcan society as this sort of traveling brotherhood/sisterhood of monks carrying with them an almost Minbari-esque need to pass on what they once were, to pilgrimage to a greater plane.

Translation: Were not paying shit for it (?)

CBS in general has very little to do with trek, it's Paramount & Bad Robot.

CBS gets licensing & distribution rights for Television only or something, it's very strange... which is why you don't see CBS logos before or after the feature films.

I hope they don't go grim dark with the series. We have plenty of good grim dark syfy shows like Expanse, 12 Monkeys, Dark Matter, etc. Even the recent Trek reboot movies were fairly grim.

Hope its a bit more Roddenberry-esque. I'd be happy with really any timeline, although my preference would be a generation or two after TNG so we can go further into new areas of space instead of rehashing old TOS/TNG aliens and races like Klingons, Vulcans, and Romulans.

Not a huge fan of streaming only, feels like its on a "lesser tier" than regular TV but who knows if it winds up being wildly successful maybe this is the show that reboots a major television network. What I'd really, really love is for this to be successful and HBO green lights a Mass Effect TV series.

I have (relative) faith it will be a full, hourly production.

CBS Television (a separate entity from CBS as a studio) will be handling it but that doesn't mean anything bad, I don't think. It's just a separate form.

Of course it's not like I have any intel or anything. We'll see. But I think they're going to want something with the potential for a long-form gig on there kickstarting their All-Access suite's original programming and in a modestly conventional format. Especially what with all the international deals to be had here.

it really depends on who is going to be on the writing staff and the characters they choose.

On a related note, Chaos on the Bridge is pretty fascinating look at how surprising it is that TNG ever got off the ground.

I don't think this is accurate at all (and Bad Robot may be producing the current movies, but it certainly has no ownership of the IP itself). All the merchandising for the Abramsverse stuff credits CBS Studios as the owner.

There are lots of potential concerns here, but I don't think CBS skimping on the budget should be one of them.

Bad Robot has the keys to the franchise until ST:Beyond is out. EVERYTHING goes through them story/design wise for the time being, which is why this series isn't coming until after that film is released...

Beyond (hah) that, It'll be interesting to see how it's all handled by the parties involved..

But in terms of Creative Control, that's all in Paramount's hands. CBS' relationship with trek is distribution and home video related merch only, their actual creative input is very very minimal beyond that.

Paramount TV / Bad Robot has nothing to do with this, or at least not publicly re: Paramount TV. This is CBS Television Studios.

CBS Television Studios is not CBS the network, and CBS The Network is not handling anything CBS All Access in the same way that Jen Salke, president of NBC The Network would not handle anything with USA or (more comparatively) Seeso, even though they have the same parent company.

That doesn't even make any sense, since it's not like Paramount/Bad Robot are planning on Beyond being the last film in the series, and yet the show is still happening.

Is that so, re: Bad Robot? I mean, I just... I don't know, there's just so much tie-in media for the Primverse released annually, to say nothing of all the times I've seen it said on TrekBBS over the years that CBS and Paramount have very defined boundaries and that Paramount (ergo Bad Robot) handles all feature films but CBS has total control over the television front. It's in their best interest to keep things kosher.

They would give Picard hair.

Prime Universe set in TNG or beyond era or bust. No seriously, that's the only way I'll actually watch this.

I would reluctantly accept Abramsverse TNG. I just don't need to see the growing pains of the Federation any more after Enterprise and the Abrams films.

That's unfortunate, as I don't feel as though any of that means peanuts next to the far bigger, longer-term question of the content of the project on its own merits. But if it's how you feel, such is life. :\

Stop hating cool things. The Borgs were a non-factor at the end of the old Star Trek universe - they deserve a revival.

They deserve a revival after Voyager took all the teeth from them. But The Borg should be kept away from anything Kirk-era and stay Picard-era. Plus, logically, the Borg would completely stomp Kirk-era Starfleet.
