I'm almost level 9. Yeah, I read about lt commanders get a free ship. I'm doing this mission called raiding raiders, and I'm going crazy. I defeated the ferengi dude. I have 6/7 of the stolen explosives, but I can't find the last one, and I've been all over this map a hundred times. :(

Press V to scan the area around you for anomalies. I think that may make it show up.

Do the 30 days of time from the retail copies make you a "Gold" member for those 30 days? Would you be able to get the free respec upon ranking up while under those days, as well as the 400 CP stipend?

This game still has a lot of jank in it's UI, particularly talking to NPCs and how the screen will spam 10 messages in the middle at once that are illegible.

Ship combat is still so fun though. Shooter mode is ok, I find myself switching in and out of it a lot.

This game is terrible but I kept playing because I wanted to ditch my POS starship and explore the lore. I'm a Lieutenant. Yay

twinking out your ship is also a helluva lot of fun. I just hit 30 now and picking up my new ship. Captain level is one of the main ships in the shows, a Galaxy class, a defiant class, or an intrepid class (and the variants).

Yeah, you can definitely tell what kind of player I am from my decision to switch from Cruiser to Science at Commander rank just because I think the science vessels look cooler.

When you get to Captain rank, you do get a selection of ships that are close to the class of ships from the TV shows but they are still different...they look the same but are more 'modernized' as this MMO is set in the future, and does not have the same abilities that made those ships unique on their respective shows... that's why they have those fucking retrofits that you either get later in higher ranks or have to purchase through cryptic points.

I've been thinking of getting a Vulcan science vessel cuz they look so cool being so huge and have that giant circle jutting out from the ship, but I dunno how to get one.

Am I missing something? I only have 2 so far, the other 3 are generic A.I or something. When I fight ship battles, I only have 2 doing ship skills.
I believe that you'll get one from the Starfleet Academy "mission" (if you can call it a mission) and the others from various other missions throughout the game. You'll usually have the choice to select from tactical, science, or engineering, so you should be able to fill out a good roster by the time that you're a Lieutenant. Having one of each skill helps during ground as well as ship missions. When you achieve access to new ships, you'll also open up new slots during ship missions; from what I have seen, for example, a cruiser will open up another engineering slot.

Anyway, I would really like to have access to a Sovereign class vessel, but I guess that won't occur until the rank of admiral.

I am really enjoying this game much more then I thought I would. Though I have to admit it might just be because it has been a long time since I played a Star Trek game and this game really nails the Star Trek vibe in my opinion.

Also I decided i really want me a Sovereign Class ship that's my long term goal. Its probably my favorite ship design in all of Trek and come hell or high water I will have me one. Since I am still a lowly lieutenant I assume it is a long ways off, but it will be mine. First things first though I need to get rid of the starter POS I have grown to hate it.

Anybody wanna organize a special time and date and a place for all of us to meet up in STO to do some missions together?

Kind of tempted to start playing again, I know I hit level 49 or 50 when the game first came out, I was using the escort classes as they packed a punch, loved the defiant etc.

I described my Daeland as a cross between a potato peeler and a PlayStation Move controller.

Just had my first major Disaster with duty officers. Lost someone. Something went preeeetty wrong with "Realign sensor array to analyze a local gravitational distortion." I feel like I should be writing a letter to her parents.

Duty Officers can die? I must be crazy, but I'm liking the ground combat more than the ships one. Maybe cause its easier. I don't know. :p Maybe that will change later.

Apparently. I hadn't seen anything beyond people going to sickbay before, but I haven't used it a lot in general. The casualty risk was Low, but we beat the odds and got a fatality. I'll pay more attention to assigning officers to missions in the future, to decrease the chance of, say, losing a Rare duty officer in a mission that they didn't add greatly to.

Man! I did a Borg War Zone mission last night. I didn't realize that you can simply taken on a Borg cube by yourself. The bastard locked me in his tractor beam and 10 seconds later my ship, and all hands aboard, were lost.

I need to read more on ship battles, sometimes I cant shot my phasers, Im guessing theres a reason.
Each weapon has a specific firing arc. Most phasers have a wide arc, but that is not true of every weapon. One of the phasers I have equipped at the moment fires two shots at once at the expense of only a 90 degree arc.

Anyway, the server went down just as I was in the middle of a mission in which I collected some great items for my ship. I hope that I don't have to do everything over again.

I see, so I have to be at a certain angle.

Do you have an enemy ship targeted?

Yes, I target a ship then I go after that individual ship.

I don't know if that's your problem, but a typical phaser array can fire at a 250 degree angle. Where you can fire depends upon where the phasers are mounted on your ship, but the first ship comes with phasers on the front and back, so you should be able to fire with at least one weapon at all times. Apart from that, I can't think of anything that would prevent you from firing.

I mainly thought it was an interesting background. I fully expect The Doctor to show up talking about a crack in my space-wall.

Ran into a weird bug just before - couldn't use abilities at all on the ground, no matter if I used the mouse, pressed the keyboard, was in RPG or Shooter controls. So I was trying to complete a quest with just my crew for combat before the servers came down...it didn't work

Defiant Class + phaser cannons + rapid cannon fire ability = most glorious moments in the game for me. I sometimes go into lower ranked deep space encounters just to take on groups of D'deridex ships. :D

Another maintenance? I get that they are probably dealing with more load than usual now, but daily maintenance windows are just going to make new comers think this game still doesn't have it's shit together after 2 years.

I'm thinking about trying this out, how long can you play before you hit a content barrier. For example in LOTRO you could make it to about level 30 before you ran out of content and had to buy something.

I decided to buy a couple of the Collectors' Editions on Amazon after seeing that they come with a pretty spiffy die-cast comm badge pin, as well as a hardbound artbook and stuff. The ingame items and gold time is just icing. :D

(Although for the free shipping, I ordered them with a preorder of Monty Python and the Holy Grail Blu-ray. I hope they don't really wait until that is released to ship the whole order.)

AFAIK there's nothing like that in STO, although getting access to the ships associated with higher levels requires either that you pay or you grind your ass off (someone correct me if I'm wrong)

So, I've been playing all my missions at the advanced difficulty setting. Worth it?

It improves the loot drops, but it's noticeably harder. If you can handle it, keep playing on Advanced. If you get stuck, drop down to Normal and restart the mission.

I'm playing on Advanced.

There is no content barrier. Everything you can buy is for convenience or an equal strength alternative looking ship.

You may be outside your firing arc. Under your ship equipment load out screen, hover over each weapon to see it's firing arc relative to where it is located on your ship. Forward weapons point forward, backward weapons point backward, etc.

Protip: during space combat, if you right click your phasers/torpedos/etc. in the action bar and they get a green border, it means once you are within weapons range and press spacebar to fire all weapons once, it'll continue to auto-shoot for you. You should do it for all your energy weapons, maybe not the torpedos if you want to launch them at more specific timings like when you've got a shot at a downed shield for maximum hull damage.

Accepted two friend invites yesterday. Let's set up a time for 5 of us to be on so we can start a fleet? We're never going to get 5 if we just hope that 5 of us just happen to be on at the same time.

Also just switched to the NX-01 even though I'm an Engineer and not Tactical. It just looks so damn bad ass. Who needs tractor beams when you've got a grappler!

Oh man, the Tactical Escort (Defiant type units) are so awesome. 4 forward banks means I can do crazy powerful strafing runs for big damage. I even specifically set up my two Tactical officers for AOE and Single target damage and swap between them in battle.
