So I just made commander in about a day of playing hardcore. After this free ship they gave me, do I have to buy the rest it seems? I don't have a lot of dilithium since I just really do the episodes, how do I earn more?

You get a free ship every 10 levels till 40, then you look into other options, fleet ships, earning and buying zen ships, or buying them from the exchange.

Thanks for the help guys. So since I'm a tactical officer, escorts are my best bet right? My first free ship I got a cruiser and did fine with it but it took a bit to kill things. Now with my 2nd ship I got a escort and that things rips dudes apart. I also got a Ambassador class from doing a mission, is it worth using right now or should I stick with my escort.

Finally got my Odyssey pack.

That depends on what you're enjoying. If your escort is decked out in cannons, and you love zipping around.. switching to the Ambassador class could be a bit of shock. At it's heart it is a cruiser but the 4 front and 4 back is a really really nice set-up and could easily make something devastating. Could make a really nice beam boat if you like broadsiding things, or even 4 beams + 4 turrets would be fine. The two trade-offs would be the obvious cannon damage loss since it can't equip it.. but you'll gain more survivability and some decent science powers if you like those.

Really comes down to what you style of ships you enjoy. The thing I appreciate about this game is that any ship can work with any captain type.

As Nikku says its all about what you enjoy, you can make any ship work. The escorts with cannons will tear things apart much better than the Ambassador can but on the flip side the Ambassador can survive better.
Tactical captains will work well in any ship so just choose a ship that matches your style of play.

As far as escorts go I'm a fan of the Fleet Tactical Escort Retrofit. Its pretty easy to obtain and with 5 tactical consoles it can put out a lot of damage. It doesn't hurt that the Defiant is my favourite ST ship as well.

Thanks to the Tactical Variant + Chevron Seperation, beam boating is working really well.
I don't go under 90 weapon power from what I see.

Which brings me to another question. 125 is the max power for any system, right? So what happens when you go over that cap? It feels like it's doing the damage that it should for 125 power, but the drop isn't more significant.

To my knowledge 125 is the 'soft' cap for power wise, but the hard cap is 160? Maybe 165, but 160 sounds right. Something in that range.

Anything over 125 is effectively like a safety net vs drains, mass weapon use etc. But as far as determining statistics from the value like weapon damage, it will only calculate up to 125.

So how active is the Gaf guild in STO? I'm thinking about leaving mine since the activity is sporadic at best. My tag is Zilara@Salonius

Also, here's my baby until I can finally afford the VA Artimage/akira refit.

I'd say we were fairly active these days. Plus we joined up with a Klingon fleet a while back so we now have a KDF fleet you can join.

Dove in for a few hours on a whim a couple days ago. I continue to love this game for just how dense the earnest fan-service is. Case in point: I love how the new Romulan ships have their own kind of "black hole implosion" destruction animation

So I made it 40, got me a mirror patrol escort and a Assault Cruiser cause I wanted the enterprise lol. The Cruiser is one bad ass beam boat. I'm ripping shit up now, and not dying lol.

What's with the deep space encounters? Every time I enter one I instantly get the message "Well done captain, we've defeated them!", and there's no objectives or anything.

Yeah. All the ships work really. Just comes down to a decent build with a good player behind the wheel not making like.. a skittles boat or something.

As for the deep space encounters.. they can get seriously bugged and not reset when they should. Usually someone completes the mission, and then leaves yet it doesn't reset. Sorta like how sometimes on a Red Alert Borg you can zone into an already complete instance.

You can earn Nukara Marks by either running missions on... Nukara (in the Eta Eridani sector block), or any other mission involving Tholians. Azure Nebula Rescue and Crystalline Catastrophe both have Nukara Marks as optional rewards.

Is anyone else not getting their shipment of Duty Officers (doffs) at level 18?

Also, can I get a fed invite? I'm in a fleet now but it seems more like a social thing, they've been exceptionally nice, and I just want to blow things up, not get to know any one.

I opened this up again a couple of days ago... wow they changed the UI a lot. I have a rear admiral (45), but I have no idea how to play her any more, nor do I remember what the skills do or where I'm supposed to apply points. I left when the Galaxy X was released, so haven't even used the Duty Officer interface, etc. Same thing for the Klingon captain. Will probably do what H-town mentioned and create a newbie Romulan to learn the ropes again.

Slendarn@suntow

You'll need to leave that fleet before I can invite you...

I'm bummed that I didn't find out about the re-run all featured episodes thing until it was like half-over. I blazed through the Romulan and Dominion story missions after having only bothered to the Klingon chapter originally. Ran out of time while doing the Borg chapter and missed out on the Breen chapter which I was really looking forward to. Oh well.

You can do the missions anytime you just miss the unique reward. Don't worry about it too much as they'll re-run them again in the future.

The Risa stuff is actually pretty fun. The jetpack is implemened really well, I think, both in terms of controls and the traversal. I'm also impressed the whole thing isn't some big cash grab with C-store stuff everywhere. Maybe playing MWO has made me too cynical =P I only wish there was a bit more to do/the island was a bit bigger, but overall a nice summer event.

I got 40 pearls doing the jetpack event with the loaner jetpack. Assuming that same pace for pearl acquisition, it would take 25 days to reach 1000. It sounds tedious, but is definitely possible over the course of July.

Man, just getting back into this game a bit after not playing for three years and I have no idea what the hell is going on lol.

I am so confused by everything.

After a lot of Horga'hn hunting...

Wheeeeeeee~

This thing is so fast and handles so well, compared to the 50 favor one. It's basically like a sports car vs an overloaded van, no exaggeration.

I really hope this is kind of a test launch for the floater, and like with the enviro suits, we'll get some more content in the future to play with them.

been there. they've added a ton of stuff since launch

it might be better to start a Romulan character if you have an open slot, and play through on that guy for a while, so you get tutorials on all the new stuff.

So I was doing a Fed Fleet Alert during a bonus marks event yesterday. I wanted to squeeze in one more while the event was running, but there's a 30 minute cooldown on queueing for it again after you finish, and I'd be a bit short on time. So, my heart weighed down with deep, deep guilt, I left early, figuring when the 30 min was up I'd have just enough time for one more before it ended. And then. I noticed I didn't have the 30 min CD.

You don't get put on the cooldown when you quit early. What. Cryptic what are you doing.

So you join a Fed Fleet Alert. Within the first ~4 minutes you get 42 fleet marks. At this point you have two options.
1) Leave and immediately requeue and get another 42 marks in 4 minutes.
2) Stay for another ~4 minutes to get 10 more marks and incur a 30 minute cooldown on repeating the mission.

Or if you have enough alts, just do it on all of them so your teammates don't think you're a jerk.

Haha, no alts -_-

Sometimes I'll type something out, to the effect of everyone should be leaving early, since you can just requeue without the mission on CD /wave! Really I should just keep that ready to paste =P

Some Google shows me that it's been this way for (at least) months. How hard can it be to have the game slap a CD on you when you leave. All this time I saw people leaving I thought they just didn't want to deal with the final siege group wave, and I kept thinking "Pfft 30 min CD what else are you going to do, might as well get the 5 marks." Feel silly now XD
