Star Trek Online Free to Play |OT| Boldly freeloading where others have subbed before

Typical pattern when logging in to STO after a hiatus.

Do some missions in my escort.
Think about how cool beams are.
Switch to my assault cruiser.
Bask in its sexy sleek curviness.
Enjoy the beam visuals.
Get sad at how much slower things die.
*sigh* and switch back to my escort.

Been playing this again for the romulan update (I have a fed-aligned engineer). Good fun, warbirds are sexy. I have to say though, tying the boffs into the storyline leads to lots of Tovan Khevs running around Nimbus III which can be confusing (and reminds me of SWTOR, lol).

Cruisers technically can use single cannons, as the ones in ST2009 seem to be, they're just not really good for much if your alternative is a beam array or dual beam bank.

Hmmm I guess that's true. I only think about beam array and dual cannons because everything else seems to not maximize dps.

I feel ya, except I don't die that fast compared to an escort. Tactical Variant of the odyssey might pack more of a punch too.

Don't feel bad. I do the same. I was just dealing with the D'deridx with cannons. Ugh the moment something went out of my way really fast.. but I love me some cannons. Though I noticed I liked beams on carriers.. something about the Vo'quv and beams made me feel like I was running cannons anyway.. Maybe the pets helped add the damage in I guess.

Just got back into this since last playing after launch. Loving it so far, so much Trek nostalgia.

STO usually nails the fan service-y stuff, so I'm shocked and disappointed they didn't put the "pool" table in the bar on Nimbus III,

I just went through the same thing with the D'deridex, finally got this beautiful ship to find it turns and moves like an elephant with no legs. I didn't want to turn it into a beam boat so I've stuck 3 RCS consoles on it to help it move, but damn if I'm not a little disappointed in it.

Yeah, I feel you. There are a bunch of ships I love the looks of, but after a few hours of playing them, I always switch back to my bug ship. Everything just takes too long to kill otherwise.

Server down........................................................................

Yea it totally just crashed this morning, was annoying as I was just trying to do one last mission before leaving, at least they did the planned maintenance for today then instead of having to wait again.

I want to join the GAF Fleet! :D

Kennedy@Kouzeon

I hit lvl 50 recently, and now I've just been trying to grind for a good Tier V ship. Oh, and I'm a Fed player if that matters.

Yes, more maintenance!
I wonder if they are actually going to patch the game to fix any bugs at some point, reading the patch notes it just is stability and performance stuff.

Screenshots cause fun!

Star Trek aesthetics make for pretty space

I want more ground planets like this. New Romulus was nice too.

At least I can get my beams on by popping that MVAM switch =D

And a big-ish gif (10mb) of the awesome singularity core equipped ship collapse/explosion

Need to get myself a proper computer to play this, my laptop isn't doing this game justice at all. I hadn't seen the Prometheus coming back together in game, for some reason that is pretty sexy, lol.

By the time they get round to fixing the mail bug it'll take me a week just to delete all my mails from the exchange. Hopefully the mirror universe event is fixed soon so I can join a match on my first attempt.

Question guys:

Just started playing this, and I think I messed up the tutorial. I'm at the starbase, but I still have a mission for "A line in the sand" that tells me to meet a federation battle group to fight the borg.

Is it possible to get back to this? If so how?

If I can't, I'll just drop it.

I can't even remember that mission. The instructions don't state where the mission takes place? As far as I know, if a mission is still available you can always do it later.

It's from the tutorial right at the beginning of the game I believe.

Talking of which, is there an easier way to navigate than what I'm doing? The mission says "find the SS Azura", so I go to sector space, look around until I see the ship, then fly towards it. Isn't there a more efficient way to navigate than this?

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
you can open your sector map and click on the system you want to go to

btw, has Cryptic still not figured out how to make checkpoints in missions persist? I mean I'm more than halfway through a combat-heavy ground mission, the server craps itself and kicks me out twice, and now I have to start the whole thing over again?

It's been built for some time now, but just thought I'd show a picture of one of the more recent starbase vanity projects we have. One would think this would be a bit vertigo-inducing.

Just started doing the missions for Nukara marks... I haven't even done a full round yet and I can safely say if I ever see another Tholian again it will be too soon.

Don't you just do Azure Nebula Rescue or something?

One Azure mission guarantees a day.

It'll be a while before I get to playing a Romulan, but I do have to say that with the model and texture updates, the D'deridexes sure are pretty.

random giantbomb TNT reminded me this went f2p so I dled it. Played like a few missions after tutorial for Feds.

No clue whats going on. Scared to put skill points in because it doesn't feel like your typical mmo tree. Tactical officer.

I also have no clue if a new loot gear is better than my old one (is there a way to compare stats?), because each item has a lot of numbers :/

Is there any strategy to ground combat? seem to be just blasting through guys with my dudes. It's kinda boring though, never really been a ranged guy in mmos.

1) If you are really worried about skill points just check out builds online.

2) If you hover over the item in your inventory while you have your character or ship equipment screen up, it will show a side by side comparison for you. Early on, equipment isn't really going to make or break you, feel free to experiment in a way that you can't really do with skills.

3) No, ground combat is pretty easy and mostly boring. You can play melee, too, but I wouldn't suggest it. For me I tolerate the ground stuff because the space combat is so good.

Is the 'shooter mode' thing needed for ground combat, or can i just play it normal mmo style?

Also, one of my officers has some buff thing that says it increases proton torpedo damage, but all it seems to do is make the cooldown of my torpedo like 30 secs o_O

I play RPG style for ground combat and find it easier than shooter mode.

The High Yield Torpedo skill will buff your torpedo so that when you next fire it it does more damage. The 30 seconds that appear on the torpedo indicate how long you have until the skill wears off. It only works for the next fired torpedo so it will wear off after 30 seconds or when you fire the torpedo.

It comes off scary at first, but pretty soon you'll be able to get it down easy. Tactical Officers have it easier then anyone else because if all you want to do is say.. get in escort or some sort of high dps focus. You really need so few skills raised compared to everyone else unless you're eyeing some sort Engineering or Science ship that has all these powers you want to click like Gravity Well.

So you picked the best class to ease yourself in. Focus on skills that raise your damage, your shield strength, your tactical skills and you'll be really good. You get a lot of freedom, and once you feel more comfortable you'll notice what you like and end up experimenting / tweaking.

Ground Combat.. yeah.. few people like it. Always been like that since the start. Melee can work if that helps. Usually the trick to getting some sort of enjoyment out of it is to try out all the weapons you can and find one that fits what you enjoy the most. Dual Pistols, Single Phaser, Pulsewaves, etc. I noticed that (for me) once I found something I liked it made the experience better for the most part. Also, I play in both modes. My Science guys I tend to use RPG mode just cause I find it easier to heal people, where if I'm just goofing off, solo, don't need to pay attention I'll be in shooter mode just cause. So both work and there's no wrong way.

Just got my D'deridex last night. She's pretty sweet.

New ship, new uniforms. Also gave my character's skin a slight green tint, makes her look a bit more Romulan.

The Romulan missions are pretty good. That Tal Shiar/Indoctrination mission was creepy.

My warbird is so boss. That moment when all beam weapons and torpedoes fire at once, it's just like a scene from Deep Space Nine, it's awesome. :D
