It's a pretty forgiving game as far as graphical options go. I run it fine on the cheap laptop I got recently, though I had to adjust the HUD scale because the default settings were much too large for the thing's dinky resolution.

May try it. Considering I have to run WoW on lower settings, although....

How does Quinto fit into STO? Doesn't the game take place in the Prime Universe?

He voices the EMH in the Federation tutorial. At least in the *current* tutorial. They've basically re-written it for the upcoming Season 8 release and I haven't tested it to see if his dialogue is still in the game.

Be advised, they are running a Lobi promotion during the Featured Episode Rerun. Some of you might remember the old scavenger hunts, but that's been done away with now that Lobi is account bound. However, this new promotion makes it easier if you didn't plan on farming with many alts. You get 15 Lobi for the first FE run you do each day per account. This is running until 12/5, so that's potentially hundreds of Lobi for just running one FE a day. Keep in mind that only the old ones count, so no Temporal Ambassador or Sphere of Influence for Lobi. I'm told that Spin the Wheel is the fastest.

I think I have one of those cheap integrated graphics card. I run WoW in low settings so that should give you an example.

FYI, I'm working on a new version of the OP in time for Season 8. Let me know if there's anything you want to see in it, Foundry content you enjoyed for instance.

Cripes, STO looks even better than the Abramsverse in some ways. It would be so awesome if the next movie looked like a lot of those screenshots.

After having my old fleet go super inactive, i'd ditched it and joined the GAFleet...

I've been missing out.

Good man!

FYI - I've just noticed the Fleet Spire personnel officer allows you to purchase additional active duty officer slots! 150,000 Fleet Credits though...

Gah... I'd love to be playing some Dyson Sphere ground combat at the moment, but the damn game won't start. Looks like lots of us are having issues with our ISPs getting through to the Cryptic patch server.

I take it we've finished the Dilithium Mine now?

Yep, all T3ed up, just the last dil store discount project slotted now.

Spire T1 is also 2 days from finishing and Embassy T3 recruitment started its 10d countdown yesterday.

So I've basically been running a tac cruiser beam boat since I got to the level cap, but I'm using a vanilla assault cruiser. It works out okay, but I'm feeling like I need a new ship.

I was thinking about maybe an escort, but I haven't ever done that with any of my characters and wouldn't really know what I was doing. Also I'd have to entirely respec.

Any good cruiser upgrades for a tactical Vice Admiral, or should I just be getting a tough little ship?

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
Last time I checked the cruisers the Fleet Excelsior was still king. Are you flying that?
No. Still running the standard Assault Cruiser.

Is this game better now than at launch? Are the animations any better

The game is substantially better than it was at launch. If by "animations" you are talking about ground combat, maybe? The ground combat is better than it was at launch, but it's still not great.

No. Still running the standard Assault Cruiser

Considered the Avenger? It's similar in design to your Assault Cruiser with a few swaps. Less crew, better turn and more inertia. Natural bonus to weapon power and engines at +10 rather then +5 to all. It could equip cannons if you want to try something else or have some spare bridge officer slots to do something with.

Unless you're doing a tank style build it might scratch the itch. Fleet version also applies.

Looks like we're pretty close to seeing "Season 8.5" being released. The stuff on the test server so far includes:

  • Shuttle/Fighter PvP arena
  • Remastered versions of early Federation missions "Stranded in Space", "Diplomatic Orders", "Hide and Sneak", "Stop the Signal", "Researcher Rescue", "The Kuvagh'Magh", "Treasure Trading Station", "Secret Orders", "Task Force Hippocrates"
"The Ultimate Klingon", "City on the Edge of Never", "Past Imperfect"
  • Various UI, economy and power fixes

http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=979871

Finally some more things to do with shuttles. Though I think it's just going to turn into rage about acetons and point defense turret consoles. Though.. maybe if teaches people not to shoot the aceton with beams....

Alright joking aside, they also said they're looking to add more stuff. I'm pretty curious to this. Nice to see a good patch coming.

Started playing a bit more again. Hopefully I can get to Max level before I'm through finally.

The I can use that odyssey ship thing. And then bum off the fleet bank for all those cool purples no one seems to be using. ;)

Some advice for anyone who's looking to farm easy CXP to trade for fleet marks: In the Dyson Sphere is an assignment called "Provide Shore Leave Services to Dyson Joint Command Personnel" under the development category. It requires 5 of pretty much any doff, with the critical traits being teamwork and unruly. I'm not sure if anything exists with both of those, but 5 purples with one trait give a 26% crit chance. A critical success with all purples gives just over 24k dev CXP, while a standard success gives over 5k. I'm not exactly sure of the cooldown, but it seems to be between 2-3 days. I had previously only done my CXP reports when I hit 145k, but since I've started doing this assignment regularly, I actually have to keep driving it back down to as close to 100k as possible. There is also a recruitment assignment that gives 10k on a crit, but it seems to only show up rarely so I do not recall its name.

Now I'm going to have to chase after that mission. I think I saw it active earlier but just kinda brushed it off since I was chasing after some diplomacy exp. ...Dang did I make a huge mistake.

well, i finally hit 50. i took an epic ground weapon. only taking one thing out at a time is kinda painful, haha.

for some reason, the game was making me respec, i couldn't put any more points into anything without doing so.

so, i did, but i have no idea if my spec is even good. i'm going to have to live with it, i guess, since i'm not paying zen for a respec token. i just hope i didn't screw myself.

The recruitment assignment is called "Send Recruitment Squad to Alpha Quadrant on Behalf of Dyson Joint Command." One thing to remember about assignments is that sometimes it's better not to use a doff that has a success trait as they are toxic to your critical chance. One example is the support assignments in the clusters/nebulae, where using 5 diplomats/advisors with the same crit traits as 5 non-dip/adv will lose you around 4-5% of your crit chance. This applies more to where crit is the only worthwhile result, such as with the supports.

As per the shore leave assignment above, 5 purples with no crit traits gets 23% crit, 74% success, 1% failure, 0% disaster, while 5 purples with only the success trait get 19%/81%/0%/0%. 5 purples with one crit trait but no success trait get 26%/74%/0%/0%. As you can see, not only are the crit traits ideal, but the success traits are poison.

That reminds me a lot like the Eppoh research mission. Do a trait for success or even the suggested career and I get a 13% crit chance. Yet I throw my blue warp theorist and he brings it up to a 20% crit, and I think my purple one I received recently did it even more.

Sometimes I gotta pay way more attention to that. But I am definitely going to hunt that mission down now.

@davepoobond - If you're worried bout the build being poor or bad you could always use http://www.stoacademy.com/tools/skillplanner/ and paste the build when you mimic what you got in game and I'm sure any of us would be happy to look it over.

i'm science, driving a science ship at the moment.

i was trying to go for a "general use" spec as best as i could. i understand the concepts more or less, but i'm not really trying to maximize my spec for raiding or anything hardcore like that. i was just aiming for being able to quest without too much trouble and MAYBE partake in a raid if i get the opportunity to.

Not a problem. Happy to help out.

Now, I can say that the build is definitely usable. So you didn't say screw yourself badly and have a terrible build. A lot of comments for example will be related to what your bridge officers abilities are and what ship you're currently flying.

Example, if you're not running any attack patterns, then yeah, having skipped it is viable. So there's still some room for tweaking if you do decide one day down the line you'd like to respec. (Like getting 3 more points in Starship maneuvers would benefit you no matter what ship you were in.) Some points in Warp Core Proficiency would help as well but otherwise it's solid enough for a first build.

Ground I think could be tweaked a bit more, have you found a kit or two you like to use on the ground? Or still undecided?

davepoobond

you can't put a price on sparks
i didn't understand the attack patterns thing which was i skipped them. i think i had specced into them before i respecced but i don't think i ever actually used them more than once or twice. its sort of a handful to learn a lot of the buffs in the game since they all seem to have more than one actual effect.

for my ground kit i really like using Physicist for normal stuff. I have a Medic Kit but i dont really use it. i dont play on a high difficulty so i dont do the healing thing, i just respawn over and over pretty much

my officer's space abilities that i recognize as being things i can use in the current ship are:

Engineer:
Engineering Team I
Reverse Shield Polarity I

Tactical:
Torpedo: High Yield 1
Beam Fire at Will II

Science:
Hazard Emitters I
Tractor Beam II
Photonic Shock Wave I
Gravity Well III

Science:
Tachyon Beam I
Tyken's Rift I

I have a lot of extra bridge officers, and i have a couple that are active that i don't even use. I dont really know the best way to improve/replace abilities so i haven't really wanted to experiment with any of them because i don't want to lose the good abilities that i actually use which are all the healing ones, Tachyon Beam, Tyken's Rift, Gravity Well, Tractor Beam.

As far as I know, anything in the first and second slots (ensign and lt.) are always available at a boff trainer. There's one at ESD in the NE side. It just costs a little EC to swap out those skills. It's only the third and fourth slots that might be rare, such as torpedo spread III. Some of those can only be trained by you or another player, or can only be obtained by sacrificing another boff with that skill, as is the case with TSIII. You'll likely want tactical team I in that first tac slot; most players won't go without it. It's not the damage boost that's as important as it is the automatic and faster redirection of shield facings that are under fire.

This is all correct. Tac Team 1 is amazing and can easily increase your survivability. That shield facing distribution is just wow. Plus you can throw it on another player if you're feeling generous.

You've got Gravity Well 3, which is excellent. Another nice change one day down the line is you could boost your particle generator skill and GW3 can do lance type damage (Really heavy stuff).

As far as Attack Patterns are, they're more simpler then they're described. Think of them as attack buffs. Most people stick to Beta and Omega. Beta for a team friendly buff that gets better with other players and pets to use it and Omega for the movement, resistances. They're good, but you're a sci ship starved for tactical spots, so you'll be okay without them.

If you did decide to pick up Tac Team 1, I would probably swap Engineering Team 1 to Emergency Power to Shields, since Team powers share cooldowns. You also got Hazard Emitters which is stupidly handy for Borg STFs and just in general.

When you have the kits you really like you could also maybe boost the skills up to yellows for the ones you use the most. But it's good you were experimenting and seeing what you enjoy.

Out of curiosity, what ship are you using right now?

davepoobond

you can't put a price on sparks
I'm using the deep space science ship. I suppose it looks more like an advanced version of voyager. It's the one you get at 40

I also got the odyssey cruiser and another cruiser that looks like the enterprise-d but the odyssey looks more beefy.

I'll have to look at switching up those two buff skills, it makes sense. I have 3 hull heals right now so I can do without 1 and the shielding sounds like good shit. I need something that'll help my shields more.

I'm using the harghpeng torpedo launcher mark vi -- I'm probably going to go back and do it again so I can get the mk xi or whatever it is if that's the best weapon. None of the mk x torpedo launchers I found so far out damage the one I have. But I don't know if the game is lying to me. I just read that high yield doesn't work with it but I seem to launch 2 every time I use it so it must be doing something.

Also the high yield torpedo doesn't get a whole lot of use since its sort of annoying I have to be on the 90 degrees within 5 seconds even though my turning speed is ridiculous now and in skating around on ice.

I think it's possible I might have missed a couple boff skills. I'll have to post later on the full list, I was just listing the ones I actually use and know how to use I think

Is there a way to improve the quality of existing boffs? I like my common boffs and instead of dumping them id rather improve their quality

Ahhhhhhhhhh~ Critical Success Send Recruitment Squad to Alpha Quadrant on Behalf of Dyson Joint Command~ So much delicious Development XP. Yaaaaaaaaay.

Okay, onto other questions. Yeah, you can go back and run it for a MUCH nicer upgrade. Now the good thing about that torpedo is, you are correct in that it can't be affected by High Yield (Or even Spread) is that is actually acts as if it's a mini-buffed by both. It hits harder then most torpedo, comes with a nice dot and has an AoE affect as well if a target explodes with it. That'd give you a perfect reason to go grab the upgrade version from the mission and you could replace High Yield with Tac Team 1.

I also think it's better for you to have more shield heals as Sci Vessels have better shield ratings, thus, get more out of shield healing then hull. (But keep your hazard emitters for sure.) You'll see an upgrade there. Also on a note, if you use any torpedo duty officers, they won't affect the cooldown on the Harghpeng (Probably it's only downside.) But it's still an excellent torpedo.

As for your boffs, all the rarity does is just just a color thing and sometimes on certain ones you can find decent traits on them. If you really wanted.. you could jot down what you have, and look for higher tier versions and then just remake the characters. But if they don't have any really good traits, it's nothing to fret over. Plus sometimes rares, or even uncommons can have better traits then rares. Sauren's with efficient only come on rare I believe. And some of my common romulans have better ones then my very rares... so it's kinda weird there.

davepoobond

I suppose I'm just attached to the way they look and their existing feature set than anything else. I am using a purple guy so I guess I don't have to feel like on completely missing out there.

I'll probably redo that mission ASAP then. I was just trying to go through all the eps before really trying to maximize my gear and stuff.

The skills are retrainable for the most part, and you could also go into the editor and save their looks / costume. I did that when I replaced / had to make new away team cause my full engineer turret team was getting too slow.

But yeah take your time and proceed at your own pace. Some of that mission gear is really great for starter stuff. I think other then the torpedo, the Jem Hadar / Breen / Efficent Engines , Patrianic shield are all pretty good. Wish the assimilated console remained story gear.
