Star Trek is now on Netflix. Four of the five series are available on July 1, and Deep Space Nine will be added on October 1st. This thread is meant to organize a nice GAF watch over the next few months. With Deep Space Nine showing up a few month later, and my desire to go in series order, I have tried to select episodes from The Original Series, and The Next Generation to last until October.
The plan is to watch four or five episodes a week. Talk and discuss them, new viewers can ask questions of GAF's Trekkies.
I have done my best to select the best episodes of the series (or very important to story arc). Feel free to make suggestions since I'm sure I missed some. Also had a tough time picking DS9's worst episode for the "Worst of Trek" night at the end.
It's worth saying that if you like what you see, watch the whole thing. I have made selections, but there are certainly quality episodes that didn't make the cut that should be viewed. If you're someone who marathons stuff, the series I have selected are (almost) all in chronological order. One or two are not so I could get in 2 partters in one week and in any case, it won't effect story continuity.
THE SERIES:
Star Trek: The Original Series
Taking place in the mid 23rd Century, the original series focuses on the voyages of the Star Ship Enterprise and her crew. The series pioneered many tropes seen in Science Fiction today. The series was seen as very progressive for it's timer with an interracial crew that had rarely been attempted at the time. The series introduces many of the core themes of Star Trek with a utopian vision of the future, as well as many of the common alien species that would continue to have a large presence in the later series such as the Vulcans, Romulans and Klingons.
Special Note On TOS
I have chosen to start with TOS, some feel TNG is a bit better to start with because of TOS's very outdated SFX. It came first, so I think it's right o start there anyways. The SFX are obviously dated, being made in the 60's However Netflix is showing the remastered ones with the new space SFX shots, and updated visuals, it still shows it's age though. It is for this reason (more than being the shortest Trek series) that it has the least episodes. I would still encourage people to stick with it, even if the SFX turn you off. There's some very fine Science Fiction story to be had. If it is too much, don't give up and just join back up when we start TNG. While still showing it's age a bit, TNG looks 100x more "modern"

Star Trek: The Next Generation
Set about 100 years after the Original Series, this show chronicles the voyages of the Enterprise - D (The 5th Starfleet ship to have the name). The show took a few seasons to get going, mostly recycling episodes from the original series, and the canceled-before-aired 2nd series planed in the 1970's. But once the show got going it really found it's legs. Keeping the original series theme of episodic Television, it was not afraid to try some ongoing character arcs and storylines. It would introduce one of televisions greatest villains, The Borg".
The Cast
Patrick Stewart - Captain Jean Luc Picard
Johnathan Frakes - William T. Riker
Brent Spiner - Data
Michael Dorn - Worf
LeVar Burton - Geordi La Forge
Gates McFadden - Dr. Beverly Crusher
Marina Sirtis - Counselor Deanna Troi
Wil Wheaton - Wesley Crusher (season 1-4)
Denise Crosby - Tasha Yar (season 1)
Diana Muldaur - Dr. Katherine Pulaski (season 2)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
Bucking tradition, Deep Space Nine sets itself apart from the star by being set on a stationary Space Station. It is set during "The Next Generation" time frame and continuing slightly afterwards. Unlike with other series, Deep Space Nine had a very heavy ongoing plot, some that would last all seven seasons. It was also very heavy into long character arcs and featured a very large supporting cast. It also looked at the darker side of the Federation, something that until now had been mostly a perfect utopian society. The story focuses on the Federation assisting the Bajorans, a species that has been under Cardassian occupation for 50 years rebuild after the Cardassians withdraw, and the discovery of a stable wormhole to the other side of the galaxy quickly turns this distant outpost to a major hub of exploration.

Star Trek: Voyager
Going back to a ship, Voyager follows the crew of the USS Voyager, after it is flung across the Galaxy and follows it's journey to get home, a journey that would take 70 years using their Warp Drive. Being set in a new part of the galaxy, the show had to continually come up with new aliens for the crew, sometimes doing very well, sometimes not so much. While the show had it's lack in quality show in places, the show could occasionally put out episodes that rank with the finest in the franchise.
The Cast
Kate Mulgrew - Captain Kathryn Janeway
Robert Beltran - Chakotay
Tim Russ - Tuvok
Robert Picardo - The Doctor
Robert Duncan McNeill - Tom Paris
Roxann Dawson - B'Elanna Torres

Star Trek: Enterprise
Set 150 years prior to "The Original Series" and a decade before the formation of The Federation" this series looks at Earths first Warp 5 capable ship and mankind's first mission into deep space. The series was very much a miss, with a mismatched cast, and uninspired storyline. It would improve with season 3, and with the return of some veteran Trek writers, would find it's traction in season 4, but low ratings still prompted it cancellation after season 4.
The Cast
Scott Bakula - Captain Johnathan Archer
Jolene Blalock - T'Pol
Connor Trinneer - Charles "Trip" Tucker III
John Billingsley - Dr. Phlox
