Star Trek: The Great Netflix Watch

Star Trek is now on Netflix. Four of the five series are available on July 1, and Deep Space Nine will be added on October 1st. This thread is meant to organize a nice GAF watch over the next few months. With Deep Space Nine showing up a few month later, and my desire to go in series order, I have tried to select episodes from The Original Series, and The Next Generation to last until October.

The plan is to watch four or five episodes a week. Talk and discuss them, new viewers can ask questions of GAF's Trekkies.

I have done my best to select the best episodes of the series (or very important to story arc). Feel free to make suggestions since I'm sure I missed some. Also had a tough time picking DS9's worst episode for the "Worst of Trek" night at the end.

It's worth saying that if you like what you see, watch the whole thing. I have made selections, but there are certainly quality episodes that didn't make the cut that should be viewed. If you're someone who marathons stuff, the series I have selected are (almost) all in chronological order. One or two are not so I could get in 2 partters in one week and in any case, it won't effect story continuity.

THE SERIES:

Star Trek: The Original Series

Taking place in the mid 23rd Century, the original series focuses on the voyages of the Star Ship Enterprise and her crew. The series pioneered many tropes seen in Science Fiction today. The series was seen as very progressive for it's timer with an interracial crew that had rarely been attempted at the time. The series introduces many of the core themes of Star Trek with a utopian vision of the future, as well as many of the common alien species that would continue to have a large presence in the later series such as the Vulcans, Romulans and Klingons.

Special Note On TOS
I have chosen to start with TOS, some feel TNG is a bit better to start with because of TOS's very outdated SFX. It came first, so I think it's right o start there anyways. The SFX are obviously dated, being made in the 60's However Netflix is showing the remastered ones with the new space SFX shots, and updated visuals, it still shows it's age though. It is for this reason (more than being the shortest Trek series) that it has the least episodes. I would still encourage people to stick with it, even if the SFX turn you off. There's some very fine Science Fiction story to be had. If it is too much, don't give up and just join back up when we start TNG. While still showing it's age a bit, TNG looks 100x more "modern"

Cast

William Shatner - Captain James T. Kirk
Leonard Nimoy - Spock
DeForester Kelley - Dr. Leonard McCoy
James Doohan - Montgomery Scott
Nichelle Nichols - Nyota Uhura
Walter Koenig - Pavel Chekhov
George Takei - Hikaru Sulu

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Set about 100 years after the Original Series, this show chronicles the voyages of the Enterprise - D (The 5th Starfleet ship to have the name). The show took a few seasons to get going, mostly recycling episodes from the original series, and the canceled-before-aired 2nd series planed in the 1970's. But once the show got going it really found it's legs. Keeping the original series theme of episodic Television, it was not afraid to try some ongoing character arcs and storylines. It would introduce one of televisions greatest villains, The Borg".

The Cast
startreknextgenerationcastfamilyguy.jpg

Patrick Stewart - Captain Jean Luc Picard
Johnathan Frakes - William T. Riker
Brent Spiner - Data
Michael Dorn - Worf
LeVar Burton - Geordi La Forge
Gates McFadden - Dr. Beverly Crusher
Marina Sirtis - Counselor Deanna Troi
Wil Wheaton - Wesley Crusher (season 1-4)
Denise Crosby - Tasha Yar (season 1)
Diana Muldaur - Dr. Katherine Pulaski (season 2)

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Bucking tradition, Deep Space Nine sets itself apart from the star by being set on a stationary Space Station. It is set during "The Next Generation" time frame and continuing slightly afterwards. Unlike with other series, Deep Space Nine had a very heavy ongoing plot, some that would last all seven seasons. It was also very heavy into long character arcs and featured a very large supporting cast. It also looked at the darker side of the Federation, something that until now had been mostly a perfect utopian society. The story focuses on the Federation assisting the Bajorans, a species that has been under Cardassian occupation for 50 years rebuild after the Cardassians withdraw, and the discovery of a stable wormhole to the other side of the galaxy quickly turns this distant outpost to a major hub of exploration.

The Cast (note to nitpickers: One character left off to avoid spoilers)

Nana Visitor - Kira Nerys
Rene Auberjonois - Odo
Terry Ferrel - Jadzia Dax
Alexander Siddig - Doctor Julian Bashir

Star Trek: Voyager

Going back to a ship, Voyager follows the crew of the USS Voyager, after it is flung across the Galaxy and follows it's journey to get home, a journey that would take 70 years using their Warp Drive. Being set in a new part of the galaxy, the show had to continually come up with new aliens for the crew, sometimes doing very well, sometimes not so much. While the show had it's lack in quality show in places, the show could occasionally put out episodes that rank with the finest in the franchise.

The Cast

Kate Mulgrew - Captain Kathryn Janeway
Robert Beltran - Chakotay
Tim Russ - Tuvok
Robert Picardo - The Doctor
Robert Duncan McNeill - Tom Paris
Roxann Dawson - B'Elanna Torres
Garrett Wang - Harry Kim
Ethan Phillips - Neelix
Jennifer Lien - Kes (season 1-3)
Jeri Ryan - Secen of Nine (season 4-7)

Star Trek: Enterprise

Set 150 years prior to "The Original Series" and a decade before the formation of The Federation" this series looks at Earths first Warp 5 capable ship and mankind's first mission into deep space. The series was very much a miss, with a mismatched cast, and uninspired storyline. It would improve with season 3, and with the return of some veteran Trek writers, would find it's traction in season 4, but low ratings still prompted it cancellation after season 4.

The Cast

Scott Bakula - Captain Johnathan Archer

What an awesome idea! Will definitely try to participate in this. It's always great to go through a tv show with a bunch of other people discussing episodes. :)

I like this idea.... been meaning to get into another ds9 viewing.

I would make one suggestion..... go series by series and watch all episodes in each season (that way it could be like reliving the entire show over again). Almost do it like a book club (have season x done by a date and we will discuss or a per episode basis.

This is awesome. Are they also putting up the movies? I missed them last time around. I need to rewatch Star Trek IV and V.

I haven't seen DS9 in years and couldn't afford the stupidly expensive dvds., really cannot wait for that.

Near as I can tell the movies are NOT going to be put up.

Week Ending April 7 - Stab Your Eyes Out Night, The Worst Of Trek!
TOS - "Spock's Brain"
TNG - "Sub Rosa"
DS9 - "One Little Ship"
VOY - "Threshold"
ENT - "These Are The Voyages"

I agree with all the others, but there must be worse episodes than 'One Little Ship' on DS9. The one where Quark wears a dress, the one on Risa or anything involving Luaxana Troi!

Maybe I'm in the minority, I always quite liked 'One Little Ship'.

Yeah. All the episodes you mentioned are worse than "One Little Ship."

Anyway, I'll definitely participate in this with TOS, TNG, VOY, and ENT. I just finished a re-watch of DS9 earlier this year, so I'll skip those.

Edit: Also, I won't be using Netflix. I got all the episodes on DVD. :)

Wesley Crusher sucks.

Also-- I've started watching old episodes of star trek TOS and they're awesome. Total camp. You can tell Shat was all about getting laid by freaky new aliens. Perfect tv show to watch after a night out drinking.

I just grabbed it because it's such a stupid premise, but I'm open to changing that one. Profit and Lace is a good one (well, bad one). The risa one was also pretty bad, but you do see Dax in a swimsuit...

Great idea, though one suggestion for DS9. You have "Second Skin," but you don't have its superior sequel, "Ties of Blood and Water."

First part: false, if only because WW has been given a reprieve for his contribution to geek culture in the last 10 years.

Second part: so true! I remember a marathon during a major holiday a couple years ago (Christmas or Thanksgiving I think) and I was stuck at my backwards inlaws. I sat around with my father-in-law watching old Trek for hours and it was non-stop entertaining.

Great thread idea, but I won't be joining you guys & gals. And yes, very nice addition to Netflix.
:lol @ blockbuster

The wife & I powered through TNG a couple years ago. So I'm in no hurry to rewatch it.

I'll probably stick with Voyager until DS9 drops. In fact, DS9 is probably all I care about for now.

This could be fun. I've probably seen most Next Generation episodes, and quite a few Deep Space Nine episodes, but my exposure to the others is much less.

Definitely going to go back and re-watch Enterprise to see how bad it really is. Haven't seen it in years. Think I'll hold off on re-watching the others until I get the remastered blu rays of the original series. Though this is going to be awfully tempting.

When will they be added? Tomorrow?

When I search they all say "Not available for streaming". Just making sure there's no shenanigans going on.

Enterprise showed some signs of life in Seasons 3 and 4, as I recall.

The result of that whole enterprise (heh) is such a shame. Season 1 squandered the premise because before long, they had transporters and phasers and photons and all the shit that a compelling series wouldhave made them struggle without. It instantly made it a pale imitation of its predecessors, and got rid of the "Right Stuff" meets "Star Trek" vibe they initially claimed to be going for.

Season 3 was wacky-madoodle but had a running storyline all season (ala Wiseguy, remember that?) and at least had some ambition.

Season 4 actually connected to some other Trek plots and storylines, but it was far too late to win back the fans...

IMO the standout, "event" episodes of Voyager will seem much better than anyone remembered. Some people just hate Kate Mulgrew and her acting, though, so they won't get past it, but Voyager's highlights are up there, and even its lowlights don't stoop as low as some of those early TNG eps.

Finally:

We should add on some side curriculum for the animated series, for those who have or can rent the DVDs. Everyone blows this off but it is truly how I got started on Trek as a kid.

The last DVDs I bought were the Pirates trilogy about 3 years ago.

I received Dark Knight and Avatar special editions for Christmas two years in a row.

Other than that, my DVD collection is gathering TONS of dust.

My dad has quite a few seasons of Star Trek and I'm borrowing them to see what the hubbub is about.

I actually liked the first season of Next Generation, but the second was awesome. I just finished the last episode yesterday. I'll continue to the 3rd season as soon as possible. Too bad that's all he has for Next Generation.

I honestly can't stand watching the original series. I liked the opening Star Trek theme and that's about it. Maybe it gets better in later seasons/episodes? And god, I know the series is really, really old but that doesn't make the ship prop look any less ridiculous...

Haven't tried Deep Space Nine or Enterprise, but I'll get to those when I'm done with the 3rd Season of Next Generation.

Yup, same here. The last movie I bought was Predators blu-ray for $10, and Avatar SE for $20. I only buy movies (on blu-ray) that I know I'll watch at least 3x, and only for under $20 (usually $15 or less). Netflix is good for everything else. Makes me SMH whenever I look at the Pick Up threads.

PERFECT!! I'm running through Stargate right now, I'm at SG1 S8 and Atlantis S1. Once I finish those I will embark on my next SciFi adventure, Star Trek :D

Very fun stuff indeed, can't wait to get started!

Bummed about the DS9 delay but really it isn't a bad wait or anything and there is plenty to watch until than.

I've never seen the last season or two of Nextgen and anything past Season 1 of Deep Space 9 so I'm going to be watching really slow (I'm still watching Dr. Who also, lol). I don't think I'm messing with Voyager though. I wanted to like Enterprise but I couldn't

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
DrForester, a couple Enterprise recommendations:

"Twilight" needs to be stuck into the lineup in Enterprise Season 3, and I would cut out Storm Front 1 and 2*, move up the Augment trilogy to the March 17 week and insert the Vulcan trilogy (The Forge, Awakening, and Kir'Shara) into the March 24th week.

*
I know this resolves the crazy cliffhanger from the end of Season 3, and is the last Temporal Cold War episode, but I feel like the Vulcan stuff is better and more important.

I'd also recommend cutting Shadows of P'Jem and putting either Cease Fire, Cogenitor or Regeneration after Shockwave. Cease Fire is more Vulcan/Andorian stuff, Cogenitor is kind of a cultural interference episode about aliens with a third gender that may or may not be oppressed, and Regeneration is the Borg episode.

Netflix and OnDemand are the reasons I haven't bought a BluRay player either.

A friend gave us a choice in December: she'd either pay for us to have a full year of Netflix or would buy us a BR player to "get with the times". Guess what I chose.

Wow! Awesome news about the series finally making it on netflix. I have been waiting to begin the series. One question though: how well are these spaced out? I want to watch all the episodes but is it nigh impossible to keep up with the viewing dates if I do so? I am sure I will have 1000 questions for the fans on here…

Lots of good choices in the lineup. I'm doing a full run through of Star Trek right now (finished TNG a few weeks ago, and am mostly through Voyager season 2 now. DS9 next and ENT after that), so I wont be joining the strict weekly schedule, but it's all in recent memory. I can only really comment on TNG's so far, but you need to add Family (season 4, episode 2) to the list after The Best of Both Worlds. It is the third part in that trilogy of episodes, and is fantastic in its own right despite the differences.
