Im going to have to say no it's not that bad re watching it I can even stomach jar jar as he represents the Galaxy in general being in a light hearted times as opposed to what it becomes.

Visually it's good
The story needed a bit of work
Jar jar could have toned down a bit
The music is fantastic

I just don't see the hate that it gets Episode II is far worse and boring

I'm gojng to start wars weekend this year and since he new movies are coming out I thought I could use some refresher...it's really not THAT bad

Thoughts!?

Yes, it is that bad.

It is pure unadulterated garbage, like everything Star Wars made after ROTJ. At this point, I'm pretty sure that the original series would be just as bad, and are only good on accident.

The entire series is more or less the same quality. I suppose the acting is better in the originals, but I don't see it when people talk about the disparity between the original and the prequel trilogies.

This is nonsense.

Depends on how bad "That bad" is for you.

Like, what's the measuring stick for "That bad?"

Jaws 3?
Kingdom of the Crystal Skull?
Prometheus?
Ghostbusters II?
Caddyshack 2?
Pirates of the Carribbean 3?

Where does "That bad" start. From there we can determine whether Phantom Menace is that bad.

It's definitely a dull story, poorly told, stuck with stiff characters played stiffly, put in situations that make little-to-no sense outside of the moments they're currently occupying. There are charms to be found, though.

Yeah it's really bad, but it's better than II. Which is really not saying much of anything because almost everything ever is better than II

The dialogue is bad and Annie and Jar Jar are pretty annoying, but it has some cool action scenes and Qui-Gon and Darth Maul are cool.

It sure could have been better.
Remove or at least tone down Jar Jar and kid Anakin, and general random silliness (droid stupidity)
Address the blockade AGAIN when they return to Naboo (in the film the blockade has vanished)
Qui-Gon could use some extra intelligence and sense. "Let's split up"... wait, what? Why?
The political part could have used extra depth and made more sinister, somehow.
The Chosen One prophecy wasn't needed, nor were midichlorians really.

At least.

It does sound and look really good for sure. But that doesn't make it great.

Not to mention it doesn't add much to the series really. Attack of the Clones is more important all around (and better IMO), the only important in thing in TPM is that Palps got to be the Chancellor.

You're right that Episode 2 is worse. The prequels were poorer and poorer movies each time out. The first wasn't any good, it's a truly awful movie and nobody should ever watch it. But it's less of a truly awful movie than the second or third prequels. It almost has a plot, for example. That helps things. It doesn't quite get there, but almost.

By far the worst of the prequels. Too much screentime is eaten up by Amidala, Jake Lloyd, gungans, podracing, etc. Qui Gon was a buffoon plus the gungan and the space action scenes were even dumber than him. Jedi ponytail braids, midichlorians, racist accented aliens...not much to like other than Duel of the Fates

I also thought it was completely lame to mimic ANH's celebration ending

Yes, it's bad. The acting is incredibly stiff, there is no humour at all and the plot is simply boring.

It's the best of the prequels though, at least they still used enough practical sets/effects for it to look like Star Wars. The music was great too and the lightsaber stuff was cool.

Its pretty terrible, the following two movies in the prequels being worse do nothing to affect the quality of the film. Like all of the prequels it had cardboard characters, a muddled story, midichlorians, tons of racist stereotype aliens, and moreover its completely unecessary. However, I look upon it as the best of the prequel trilogy, but thats not saying much.

i like the podrace but all the stuff on tatooine just feels like filler.
i think it looked better effects wise compared to 2 and 3, maybe because they had real sets
it has a kickass battle with darth maul

but the acting is pretty dry
and the story is otherwise pretty terrible

It has no redeeming qualities.

"The podrace was pretty cool..."

I prefer it to 2 and 3.

At least it looked like a live-action film. The other two look like dreamworks animations.

"The podrace was pretty cool..."

The pod race went on for far too long, it would have been a good sequence if it was 80% shorter. Imagine if in ANH Luke just circled the Death Star for 10 minutes before anything interesting happened.

Its bad, but its also by far the best of the prequels. You can tell that Lucas was actually trying with it, and the effort put into the sets and SFX feels sincere.

Episodes II and III look, feel, and sound like a fucking PS2 game. And every time I see clips of them I imagine Lucas sitting in a plush chair drinking coffee and just pushing buttons on a computer, in contrast with the other films (yes, even Episode I) where I imagine Lucas tired, sweaty and on Location on Tunisia trying to get a shot done before the sun goes down and the lighting is ruined.

I never loved the SW movies to begin with, but Episode 1 is easily the weakest of the bunch. Sorry to that kid who played Anakin, but I mean...better child actors exist. They couldn't have gotten one of them for the freakin Star Wars movies?
