Episode 1-3 didn't suck because they used CGI, they sucked because they sucked at using CGI.
Jar Jar was just a bad character.
Yoda puppet in episode 1 was awful, the CGI Yoda was like he was an actual living creature, not limited by the qualities of the puppeteer. CGI is not a bad thing, and the worst thing about the CGI is in relation to the live action actors performances in the prequels.
Episode One had all of those.
You really don't understand, do you? It's not "just a puppet", it's a symbol of everything we've ever hoped for. When that beautiful creature walked on the screen, I actually cried. It's obvious that we finally have someone in charge who gets it, who understands what Star Wars really means. This franchise was never meant to be a CGI fest, it was about going on a practical puppet adventure with a bunch of my best friends. And this proves to me that we are there again. I can proudly state that Star Wars has it's soul back. "Just a puppet"? Good God, sir. This is one of my new best friends!
Really hope JJ Abrams is going to go the Del Toro route of allowing the puppets and CG to work together to bring the creations to life. Del Toro's creatures for Hellboy 2 and Pan's Labyrinth were amazing, and the "real" feel to them are exactly what the Star Wars franchise needs to ground it back from the floaty/not quite there feel that the prequels had.
Not to be a Buzz Killington or anything, but didn't the prequels also have puppet creatures here and there? I don't think I've ever seen such an explosive reaction to something so pedestrian. I mean, the design is cool and everything, but...really?

The prequels had extensive amounts of prosthetic make-up, sets, miniatures, animatronics, and practical effects mixed in with the CG. But you'll never be able to change the now established narrative that they were nothing but CG tech demos.

Always amused me when someone bitched about "all the obvious CG" in a particular prequel scene that was primarily setup with miniatures.
JJ did a ton of the same thing on the Trek films, mixing practical effects and sets with digital effects. I expect the same approach.

Yup. Abrams saying that they'll be a greater focus on props and other physical stuff will probably be not much different than what the Prequels used. Just less obvious perhaps. Some examples for instance...Always amused me when someone bitched about "all the obvious CG" in a particular prequel scene that was primarily setup with miniatures.

the robots from Elysium are the superior example of CG done right.
true. but D9 showed creatures done right in CGI.
Looks like a large part will be shot in london, which is probably where their green screen studio is. So its nice to see puppet work and I am sure there will be more puppets used, but to think there won't be CGI is unrealistic.
You all act as if they couldn't replace that guy with CG in post. Happens all the time!
And how typical with the CG hate. There's been plenty of digital/CG work done in the past several years that people never realized were CG. It's up to the director to decide if a shot is good enough quality for them to final. Poor CG these days almost always comes down to budget/time and director/studio decisions. It also applies to practical effects. A bad looking shot is a bad looking shot regardless of whether you go practical or digital.

I think ILM knows what they're doing.

It's just whether they'll be afforded the schedule to do it right.
I will say, Abrams' enthusiasm is great to see. I was hesitant when he was chosen for the job, but he definitely seems like the right guy at this point.
No doubt.
But having puppets is also great IMO, especially if they supplement them with CG. A good healthy mix will really help for great onscreen presence, as well as nailing that SW nostalgia.
