Star Wars: Rebels - First Trailer

Is this going to be canon?

The animation looked really nice. I still have to watch Clone Wars but this doesn't look that bad.

This was the show that was supposed to have an art direction inspired directly by Ralph McQuarrie's paintings right?
Can't say they succeeded there tbh. Some vehicles seem inspired by it but it clashes with the character design.

Games were never canon, so they could basically do whatever.

True, but I doubt being canon is gonna stop the people behind Rebels from interpreting that "first victory" line in any way they choose. It may, in the end, refer to only the Yavin cell in particular winning their first publicized victory against the Imperials; not the Rebellion as a whole.

There is a ton of talent in the television space right now and there is no reason we shouldn't have a kick-ass Star Wars show on. It's the perfect medium for expanding and fleshing out the universe, I hope they learn to take advantage of it.

Well, it's not like the makers of the show are all soulless corporate nobodies; I mean, they've got the freaking creator of Gargoyles and Young Justice working on this thing, in addition to most of the team that created The Clone Wars. Rebels could very well be that kick-ass Star Wars show, but there's no way in hell Disney's going market it like that.

Well, there could still be Senate scenes. The Senate wasn't disbanded until right around Episode IV.

Given the show's small scope at this point, I doubt we'll be seeing Coruscant until later seasons; still, I'd like to see a Palpatine-controlled senate. I'd imagine it looking a bit like this: https://i.imgur.com/ho2HYWX.png

I really need to get round to watching Clone Wars at some point, seeing as it is canon with the films and in case of any cameos in this it would be nice to know what is going on. That and I've heard it gets better, I only watched that first film thing and it was rather iffy.

But anyway, seeing as this is called Rebels I was expecting something a little more like the Rebel Alliance we saw in the films rather than what seems to be a random guy with blue hair and co. Doing whatever. I also going from comments in here and this taking place 5 years before ANH, I can't say I would have expected any Jedi to really be around by that point. So hopefully it won't be a thing, the Jedi who survived in the Original trilogy had both stayed well hidden in the middle of nowhere, and not spent their time taking on the Empire who would then hunt them down.

Was the female voice Britta??? (Gillian Jacobs)?

It's not on imdb but it sure sounded like her.

Vader is a less is more type of dude.
If Vader is in the show, he shouldn't be "the villain" anyway. "Villain" implies someone the heroes can fight. If Vader shows up, it should be more like a force of nature. You can't fight him, you can't stop him, just run. That'd go a long way to rebuild Vader's badass credibility, anyway. And he kind of needs a few points of that back after Episodes I-III.

So I support having minor villains for the heroes to fight. If only to make Vader that much more terrifying if he does show up. I mean, we've seen Vader mostly from the eyes of people who could stand up to him, if only barely. Now imagine Vader seen from the eyes of people who he'd swat aside with ease. Yeah. Vader's a scary dude.

First time we ever see Star Wars acknowledge the existence of gravity.

That whole bit feels like one of the writers had a beef with the way the crews in Star Trek never used the ship to their advantage in terms of fighting off boarding parties (cut gravity, bleed oxygen from the area? Nah, we'll send some guys in with phasers and maaaaybe throw some force fields down), and sees that particular scene in Rebels as a way to provide some commentary. Pretty inspired, in any case.

It's a show for kids, I can't imagine an adult being interested in watching stuff like this.

Hopefully the films will have the universal appeal of the originals.

The Clone Wars was a show for kids and that turned out great for adults and Star Wars fans.

The ironic thing is, Thrawn might actually appear in Rebels at some point, considering how aware of the fanbase the creators are; they've gone on record as saying that they're totally down to use (and are already utilizing) EU elements. Wouldn't be surprised if he popped up as a low-ranking officer on some Star Destroyer or something.

Looks fine. The main kid has an annoying design, but everything else looks entertaining. I'm surprised people are still pretending that the CGI Clone Wars series wasn't shit. This looks like a massive step up seeing as how there seems to be no galactic politics, jar jar binks, angsty Anakin, Padme episodes, or any prequel references whatsoever. So far, so good.

You should re-evaluate why you think those things are bad, because none of those things are bad by themselves. You are mistaking taking place in the prequel universe as something that is bad.

Really hate the cartoony style, the character designs are awful. Also thought Clone Wars looked like crap visually (which is the main reason I haven't watched much of it).

Jedis and Dark Jedis popping out of the woodwork as usual. I thought Obi-wan and Yoda said they were hunted down and killed.

When will people realize and accept that Yoda and Obi Wan were fallible and wrong about many things, it is part of what the entire prequel trilogy was about...their vanity and ego.

I'm willing to give it a shot.

That's honestly the way to go. A lot of people dismissed TCW from the trailers or after the first film (although I can't entirely blame them there) and ended up loving the show.

Talking of which rewatched "Landing at Point Rain" last night, fantastic episode.

Think it looks really cool to be honest. Not being based around Anakin is an instant plus for me.

Although Matt Lanter does a fantastic job. He is Anakin when I think of the character now.

Looks pretty awesome.

I don't understand why anyone who likes clone wars would dismiss this out of hand, other than bitterness that the series is coming to a close.

No pretence here mate. There was a lot I didn't enjoy, but overall I loved the show.

I'd also be willing to bet good money that there are things you like that I'd regard as 'shit'. Funny how opinions work.

They were wrong by retconning a lot of stuff, and by permitting so much EU garbage that is no longer canon at least.

I'm not completely shitting on retcons of course. Empire Strikes Back had a few great ones, including probably the best in cinema history.

The way they're incorporating McQuarrie's interesting design quirks into the animation is fun to catch.

For example, Kanan's lightsaber looks like the way McQuarrie drew them in that hero shot. They're not solid bars of light with a slightly rounded point at the end. They bulge out a little at the hilt, and taper from there all the way to the point.

I thought that was kinda cool.

Starkiller was made non-canon for this? ;_;

Nothing outside the 6 movies and The Clone Wars is cannon anymore, the games, books, comic books, everything is as good as fan fiction now.

The other thing I wanted to say: Hire fucking Tartakovsky and stop the 3D bullshit!

Hmm, let's cherry-pick the worst (likely season one) picture we can google, when it's well known the characters and animation improved season on season. Case in point:

It occurred to me yesterday that, if sticking to canon, this is destined to be the most boring show about the Rebellion ever.

Hearken back to the opening crawl of Episode IV:

"It is a period of civil war. Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire."

First. Victory.

Meaning that, throughout this entire series, there can never be anything remotely close to a major engagement, at most a few skirmishes, that the rebels will probably lose. This will end up being a small underground guerrilla movement that can't hope to make any change. The real, organized rebellion won't kick off for years after this series is done.

This is a small, pocket group. The actual Rebel army was much, much, larger and far more organized. This group could be what inspired the Rabel alliance to begin with. They are rebels, but not the rebellion.

Maybe it shouldn't?

I don't think it needs to be either or. The OT had a great mix of light hearted banter and fun, and deep dark philosophical mythology. I'll be happy if Rebels somehow manages to tread that middle ground also, although given the demographic it is likely to skew lighter. And that's fine, as long as it doesn't rely on Chopper shenanigans every two minutes. Less is sometimes more with this stuff.

The budget doesn't seem to be very high, which is weird since this is Star Wars. But since Disney owns it, they are going to try and make it appeal to children. I'm not feeling it from that trailer, but I'll still watch episode 1 and 2.

Thrawn died for this.

Thrawn like other characters in the novels and games, were never officially recognised as canon anyway unless they were present or mentioned in the films and show.

Even if they hadn't made everything else officially non-canon, they were never going to take into account 99% of the characters and events that happened in the EU in the 30 year gap. And unless what was in the books lines up with anything they decide to do in the new films they would have automatically been thrown out of the unofficial canon they were already in.

Well if this is any indication of the quality of Episode 7...

...how did you come to this conclusion... just because of the studio? Abrams and Kasdan probably aren't planning on making Episode VII just like this. It's a CGI television cartoon series. I don't think they'll do that with the actual films.

Maybe it shouldn't?

Early Clone Wars was terrible, why would anyone want that?

This is the darkest era in the Star Wars saga, the cast and their interactions will be the source of the lightheartedness while the galaxy at large shouldn't shy away at what it is.(you know like how the OT did it)

Early Clone Wars was terrible, why would anyone want that?

Family entertainment isn't automatically terrible. There are positive examples of it existing and being enjoyable. You don't HAVE to make something dark in order to make it worth watching. Like was said above - it's not necessarily an either/or. In fact, if you nail the family friendly tone (and make it legitimately entertaining) then when the darker moments pop up, they mean more.

For me - this show essentially looks like its' going to be a family-oriented Firefly in the Star Wars universe. That could be a pretty good thing.

The Original Trilogy wasn't DARK. There were elements of darkness, yeah, as with any basic adventure story. But Star Wars was absolutely concieved of and executed as a family film. Empire was more like a fairy tale (which aren't the most lighthearted, either) and Jedi ended with a big teddy bear party :)

The fact there are jokes in this isn't necessarily a negative, so long as the jokes actually land. Which is still to be seen.
