If we're talking using old lines, it would be awesome if Luke's first appearance in this movie is be him taking off his hood and saying to BB-8, "Hello there!"

I don't blame them for forgetting that scene at all. It's a fuckin' turd, really. Fisher's work in particular. Not that Ford does any better when he comes in, either. Everything about that scene is just ass, for the most part. The dialogue is blah, the scene doesn't seem to make any sort of sense considering who any of these people are (Why is Han acting the way he's acting, why is Leia doing THAT in response to the knowledge she's related to the man who physically forced her to watch her planet explode, etc. etc.)

Basically, aside from the reclamation of Luke's lines in this trailer, the only saving grace of the entire sequence is Williams' Brother & Sister cue playing behind it.

I think that scene and the one of the conversation between Luke and Vader before he's taken to the Emperor are the some of the worst scenes in the OT. But that one in particular is just completely off. Not only are the lines awkwardly delivered, but it also looks bad.

I haven't looked at this thread in days. I can't believe people are still debating over a verifiable fact about the voice over.

This is NeoGAF. We debate everything; from how many times do you wipe and do you pee in the shower.

It's great.

I actually sat here with my mouth open in disbelief. I didn't want to say anything because i have been banned for lesser things.

Love the reaction vids. I don't think any movie comes close to eliciting responses like this in such a small preview.

Also, I am shocked it took people a while to figure out it was Luke talking.

It also looks like the YouTube views of this thing are north of 50 mil already. Since they said they'd gotten 88 million total in 24 hours, I'm curious what the week's totals are.

Of course, there's still no real link between "I watched a commercial on YouTube" and "I watched the movie because of the commercial" so this is all just number-watching for the sake of it.

NeoGAF should do their own reaction mashup :P

I would SUCK on a reaction video 1) because I'm completely aware there's a camera on me and it would fuck me up 2) I'm pretty sure I don't actually do anything upon first watch. I just kinda - watch it.

Mine would have been embarrassing as hell because I lost total control over my emotions. I didn't do cartwheels or whip it out or anything but I was a quivering mess. I was pretty much like that girl next to Tyrone Magnus lol

Heh, should we try to organize a "GAF REACTS" for when Trailer #1 finally drops?

Do you think anyone here has the level of patience to wait long enough to set up the camera to start recording before immediately mashing the play button?

Ian Glenn would be an awesome middle aged Obi-Wan.

He has the look AND the voice. He has that same warble that Guinness had. I could easily see him saying "scum and villainy".

If Iain Glen could be added to the cast, in any way, that would be awesome. I love him.

I got a little misty and definitely clapped (once--I was at work) at the final shot.

I'm down.

I'll do it, but I can't promise I'll release it to the public.

If I made a reaction video it would be boring. I just watch too. The reaction is more internal :P

Been watching tons of reaction videos though. Don't know why I waste time doing this lol

This is how I envision a lot of people who watch a trailer and then make a post about it.

I found this to be true about a lot of scenes in ROTJ. In general, what happened during that movie? I still enjoy it but it's my least favorite of the OT.

And I dont think I'll ever be okay with "somehow I've always known."

I actually sat here with my mouth open in disbelief. I didn't want to say anything because i have been banned for lesser things.

Understandable, definitely gotta tiptoe sometimes.

Holy shit @ how the entire group explodes with Han.

Man watching this made me realize I'm probably gonna have a hard time containing myself in the theater when this comes out.

I mean its been 32 years since Ep6 came out. I was 3 years from being born but I grew up with original edition OT trilogy. Gonna be an amazing mix of emotions seeing the original cast again, and I never thought I'd EVER see the future of Star Wars past Ep6.

What a time to be a Star Wars fan!

It's weird because I grew up with Star Wars but it wasn't until about 1997 when it was all over the place again that I really became a fan.

I mean, I was old enough to be born before Empire - I watched Empire on Betamax, I had a bunch of figures handed down to me from my uncle (only one vehicle, the little orange egg transports from Bespin), I remember sending off for an R2D2 toy in like 1983 from cereal boxes. I didn't see them all until 1991 or 92 and I barely remember them since we were too busy exploring our uncle's den while the movies were playing on TV. I didn't really SEE them until 1993 when I sat down and watched them in the new "digitally enhanced" versions that year. That's when I realized Han survived Empire.

Then 97 came and I remember buying my first action figures (classic Obi-wan, Vader, Yoda and Boba Fett) and getting the SE, and buying Pepsi and Mountain Dew for the collector's cans that I realized I truly loved the franchise.

I know! Back when the OT was all we had, I didnt know if they would ever actually make the movies George hinted at. I actually found it unlikely.

Then once they announces the PT, I thought that maybe they would make the PT and then make the ST immediately afterward.

But all the backlash after the PT made me figure that George was going to take his ball and go home. Who would want to keep going after the way fans treated him?

Instead he gave the ball to someone else and let them keep playing! Never thought this day would come, I seriously thought he'd keep a deathgrip on the franchise until his death, then at that time someone else would finally get the rights.

I'm rewatching AOTC (lol), and I was thinking. When the bugs are about to attack Padme in her sleep and Anakin comes rushing in and pulls his lightsaber to kill them, what if padme had jumped up that second? Her face was so close to the lightsaber even when she was asleep that a small movement would have killed her. Heck, even her reaction was delayed to make the moment work. She rose up after Anakin had killed them. Why didn't Ankin use the force instead? Poor judgement.

He's a Jedi bro, he knew what he was doing. He could have anticipated her movements via the Force. This is also the reasoning behind that saber spinning in the Episode III duel.

Haha oh totally. I still remember when the 97 SE editions were being re-released in theaters, my Dad was telling my brothers and I that seeing star wars on home video was one thing, but we HAD to experience it in the theater. I still remember my Dad smiling when he brought us to the theaters to see them all again, and I was able to pick out all of the new changes since they were ingrained in my memory.

Just the other day I was having dinner at my folks' house, and my Dad and I were talking about EP7 and you can still see that twinkle in his eye about how excited he was for a new OT cast movie coming out. I know that sounds kind of cheesy but whatever :P

Oh yeah definitely. I enjoyed the PT in their own ways even though they weren't as good as the OT. However once Lucas said he wasn't gonna make the post OT trilogy I was heartbroken and I never expected him to ever give up the franchise, let alone it going to Disney.

Regarding an Obi-Wan spinoff, correct me if I'm wrong but they never explained how Obi-Wan found out that Anakin was alive and was Vader, did they?

Anakin become Darth Vader before the volcano battle. If I recall correctly, Obi-Wan saw a hologram where Sidious calls Anakin "Vader".

Obi-Wan probably kept up with news around the galaxy by visiting Mos Eisley every now and then, listening to what smugglers and other patrons were talking about.

IIRC, Obi-Wan presumed Anakin/Vader to be dead at the end of ROTS.

Either it's luke speaking to his son, and he is referring to Anakins ghost when he says has it

Or

my own crazy fan theory

Luke is Narrating to us the audience a Note/Letter he is reading, which written by his son (domhall gleeson) the note is handed to him by rey who is worried by the disappearance of her brother. In this note the speech on the trailer how refers to.

My Father HAS it (luke)
I have it (lukes son)
My sister has it (rey)
And now you have it (kylo ren who turns out to be a solo? Who would be cousin with lukes son)

Lukes son has been keeping in contact with kylo ren because he is cousin, only when we first meet him he goes by the surname of solo not Kylo Ren yet, rey has seen/felt Darkness in Kylo Ren, and she is scared of him and tries to keep her brother away feom him, only her brother goes searchig for him, maybe it's Kylo Ren, searching through the woods (like we see in trailer one) searching for lukes son/reys brother.

It's wierd being 30 and thinking "these characters have never been in a new piece of footage on screen in my lifetime".

Or it's just reused dialogue from Return of the Jedi.

They're the central characters of the mainline films.
Well, they were about Luke, and then later about his father, so of course the justification became that Star Wars is about the Skywalkers.

But I wonder if that will continue going forward? I guess that hinges on whether or not Rey is a Skywalker.

If the filmmakers really believe it is as you say... That pretty much means she must be Han and Leia's kid? I don't see Luke having a kid? And I don't see Finn being that kid, for obvious reasons....

There's been pages of posts in this thread (that seem to come up at steady intervals every 10 pages or so) wondering who Luke is talking to in the trailer and what the context of the dialog is. We already know who he is talking to: Leia. In Return of the Jedi.

Right, so ask yourself: WHY are those lines being re-used here? The dialogue wasn't chosen haphazardly just because it sounds nice. The point is to allude to the idea of a new Jedi successor, possibly a new Skywalker descendant. That it ends on the line, "You have that power too" -- deliberately reordered from the original take in ROTJ -- I think hammers home what message they're trying to get across here.

I'm not saying the voiceover here is brand new, or that Hamill will say those lines again when he meets Finn or Rey or whoever the new Luke ends up being. But I don't think there was no reason behind JJ using those lines, and re-ordered in that way, for this trailer.

I don't think it necessarily means the successor is a Skywalker. Obviously it could be so. But those lines could be interpreted just as "the power was in my family, and you have it too".

Oh I'm aware of why they used this dialog in this order:
It works perfect in the context of the trailer and complimentary imagery, and the re-edit with the last line gives the idea of a new force user in the new film.

But there's no mystery to be had about who Luke is speaking to. He's not talking to anyone in the new film, he's talking to Leia in ROTJ. It's alluding to a new force user, and the mystery is which of the three new leads that might be, which really shouldn't be a big shock since I think it's assumed there would be at least one new force user protag in a new Star Wars trilogy.

Yeah, I don't think it HAS to be a Skywalker or that either Finn or Rey are related to Luke -- though given how much of a throughline the Skywalker family is to the saga, I'd be pretty surprised if Luke didn't have some kind of descendant, and that they weren't part of these movies.

That would be an extremely confusing non sequitur. "The Force is strong in my family. My father has it. I have it. My sister has it. You, total stranger with no relation to me whatsoever also have that power. I don't know why I had to mention my family having it. Just like rubbing it in, I guess.

"By the way, I love dairy products. Milk is delicious. Ice cream is delicious. Cheese is delicious. I like bacon grease too."

Trust me you way WAAAAY over-thinking this. This is just ROTJ dialogue for the teaser.

Could we maybe change the subject?

I'd love to discuss possibilities for whatever new alien main cast member is introduced. Live action vs. cg, English speaking, subs or just noises that the audience can understand based on how others respond, visual design and characterization, etc.

I've given a lot of thought to why Chewbacca was a fundamentally better character, on a conceptual level, than most of the newer aliens, and what possible lessons should be taken from him when constructing a new alien party member. Would love to hear other opinions on the matter.

well, we have had confirmation the new alien character is indeed CGI.
