damn I should have actually played more than on my first Beta invite,

Bounty Hunters can heal?!?!

I made a bounty hunter healer in the 2nd beta weekend. I wanted to try out BH plus I wanted to be a healer so it'd be easy to get into instance groups. I healed pretty well I thought.

For those who have played in the beta, do you find that it would be possible to play a "light-side" imperial, or are all of the imperial decisions/quests inherently evil will little wiggle-room? I was exploring the possibility of playing an imperial that WASN'T bent on destroying planets and torturing people, but don't know if that is a realistic possibility.

It's possible. You can go full light while playing Imperial if you want.

Entirely possible and even enjoyable. I found that playing a light side imperial meant your "good" decisions had emotional impact.

Republic characters that aim for the light side often come out as self righteous pricks.

I found the light side/dark side choices for the Bounty Hunter to be enjoyable. I stayed on the light side most of the time in one play through (atleast to level 42) and through the entire play through I really felt like I had the choice to be good and still be imperial. The samething applied for Republic classes I played, just didn't play them up to a high level.

Yeah, my reason precisely. I thinks that's a real boring story to tell so I'm looking to mix it up. It's good to hear that it's a viable option. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Now I just have to decide on a class - I'm hearing the Jedi/Sith stuff is kind of bland, but it's the only thing I can see myself playing as.

Pretty much this. If you're interested in the morality or story side, then you should be doing Imperials first.

Is this game going to be how I remember World of Warcraft and Dark Age of Camelot, where there were vastly more "regular" characters (humans) than every other race? In other words, are the Jedi/Sith Knight areas going to be jam packed with newbs?

I'd say that's a fair bet. You get away from the starting area pretty fast though.

I can recomend 2 stories/classes from personal experience.

The imperial Agent is a fun class, especially as a sniper, whose story plays out exactly like a James Bond movie... most importantly, the story keeps going strong throughout all the chapters, something that is rare on most classes.

The Sith inquisitor, starts out very strong with a ridiculousness campy evil story, the dialogue choices are really spot on and you are practicably "forced" to play it evil just to hear you character being a dick to everyone... the story tho looses steam through the middle of the game, but ends up finishing with a bang.

Those are my two suggestions story wise.

will this game have the age old problem for dungeons where you need to be a tank or healer to get in groups quick?

The "holy trinity" is in effect, apart from the first flashpoint (instance/dungeon) which you can complete with no healer or tank, all others require a dedicated healer and tank.

All races are humanoid in form/build, the difference being only "skin deep".

The inquisitor might not be for me, since I don't want to take the pure evil route though I will take a closer look at the imperial agent.

My knowledge of this game is lacking and I really have to dig into some info before I make my ultimate decision.

I'd also like to join GAF server but can't decide on PvP or PvE. I haven't played a ton of MMOs in the past (just FFXI for a few months earlier this year and very brief stint with WoW) so I'm asking for some suggestions. Does PvP get frustrating? Would I have to be a super dedicated player to even stand a chance on one of those servers? I'm looking to play this fairly casually, if that helps.

I confess i tried more of the pve aspect during the various beta builds, but from what i have played of the pvp, its mainly an instanced play mode, with various battlegrounds catering to different pvp gameplay types such as capture the flag.

Theres also unorganized world pvp if your playing on a pvp server, or you can get a taste of organized world pvp on 2 different planets.

You have a world area where you can find free for all pvp, where only your guild or group mates are safe from your backstabbing, and there's also a more battlefield faction based world pvp on another planet.

Anyways, this guy is much more eloquent explaining it all... http://www.incgamers.com/Previews/363/the-pvp-of-star-wars-the-old-republic-preview

Site's working fine for me.

Oh yeah, today's Friday. I wonder what kind of update we'll get today.

For those who played beta

What was the strongest pvp class?

How is heat management with bounty hunters? it seems to me it needs work, when I watched a video people had problems with it, maybe its just the players not managing it properly?

Anyone play high lvl trooper? Is the story any good? Im really considering rolling sith again after my beta experience.

Didnt find it much interesting, although out of all the republic classes the Jedi were the worst, story wise. Most fun for me was the smuggler. But as in everything else, your mileage may vary, some people actually enjoyed the "magic aspirin" story of the consular for example. :)

Concerning the strongest pvp class, someone asked about, at one point the sorcerer was considerably overpowered, then it was nerfed to be more manageable. As a Jedi Sage (my main class in the last beta phase) i had the most trouble against stealth and high burst dmg dps classes, like the assassin/sniper etc.

Heat management isn't too bad on BH but something you certainly have to be aware of. If you try to pop every ability on cooldown you'll quickly find yourself starved. If you focus on your most heat efficient abilities (only aoe for multi-targets/don't spam 0 cooldown ablities) and weave in your basic attack you can sustain for quite a bit.

From PT tank perspective you also regain some heat from blocking as well as the end of tree ability allowing you to discharge a small amount of heat as an attack every 15s.

It's also important to keep heat low as the recharge rate is inverse to the amount of heat accumulated, in this regard the heat discharge may need to be 1-2 points higher at 0 heat. If I'm not mistaken Smugglers/Agents get a flat 5 base regen regardless of resource level. For fights you know will last longer you want to pop your 50 heat dump around 40-60 rather then when you're hitting 100 heat.

Played a PT tank to 36 for reference.

BH,Trooper,IA and Smuggler Energie/Ammo Reg. are the best.
I like to heal with it on my smuggler, much better than almost infinite mana

Smuggler: 100% Energie = 5/sec, 20% or less Energie = 2/sec, only 40% Reg. if u are doing bad ^^

Nar Shaddaa is the first time - it's the 4th planet for both sides at the low 20s.

I played a merc to 42, and had pretty much the same experience. Heat is kind of a drag at first and I didn't like it, but you learn to make it work for you and it's not too bad. On my merc, I found it wasn't too hard to keep up a solid dps rotation while maintaining maximum or 3/4 heat loss. You just have to train yourself to toss in 1-2 rapid shots at regular intervals. It also somewhat increases the value of channeled abilities (flame thrower, unload), since their heat cost is incurred initially, but during the course of the actual channel, your heat dissipates normally as if you aren't doing anything. So it's possible to activate a channeled ability and have less heat when it's done than when you activated it.

Has there been any consensus on the Consular class? I enjoyed playing a Priest in WoW as my alt and I am leaning towards this unless someone can talk me out of it.

Consensus? This. Is. MMO.

Consular/inquisitor are probably one of the "healthiest" classes. People routinely accused them of being OP in the beta. Sage/sorc has very solid healing and dps, and shadow/assassin were apparently the single highest dps spec at the end of beta. Look like fun tanks, too.

Yeah, I have heard that the consular story is pretty awful.

Have you played Inquisitor? I watched some youtube vids, and it seem like it was as interesting dealing with the same things SW goes through.

Sith Inquisitor has a interesting storyline at the start but I heard that it drops in quality later on. Still, probably better than the consular one.

Agh im getting so hyped. Been waiting 3 years for this game. I wish they would let us know times for earky access. With my luck i will be working when the email comes.

Same, downloaded it with a 5MB/s speed. Now to wait for the early start.

I wasnt at 5, i was around 4 but still it was damn fast. It didnt matter if this was being downloaded during the Beta weekend either. The Diablo 3 beta download on the other hand was brutally slow. I dont think i went over 700k/sec and took forever.

I´ve read somewhere that if anyone wants to continue the story from the KotOR games / Revan Book, they should play a Jedi Knight first, as the class story closes the entire story line.

P.S That being said, i couldnt help myself and went looking for the class ending on youtube... holy shit that is epic. Guess i just found out which class im gona play when i role a republic character.

It's supposedly not. I've heard a shitload of complaints about it way back in June. Like a shitload.

From my own experience I found the Jedi Knight story be alot more bland and boring. I actually found the consular story a bit interesting, only thing I didn't enjoy was the first companion you get.

This is from playing both classes to level 9-10+, doing the whole starter planet.

There's a lot of hate on qyzan, which I don't really understand. He's a pretty rad bro to have cruising around the galaxy with you.

Im skipping jedi in hopes that they fix what i played. It was really bad compared to sith. I was actually having trouble enjoying myself vs sith i couldnt stop playing.

I'm not sure I understand what needs "fixing", since jedi and sith are the exact same classes. Unless you are just talking about story lines, which are of course subjective and won't be "fixed."
