I just realized today that Star Wars Galaxies will shut down on the day that The Old Republic Early Access begins.

Anybody know what they are going to do to "end" Star Wars Galaxies? Is SOE known for having cool finishing events for MMOs that are closing down, or will they just shut off the servers?

Rumor has it that everyone will be summoned to Alderaan for an "emergency" summit

The Witcher doesn't even have dialogue wheels. I deserve to be trolled better than this.
I was about to say, I just finished Witcher 2 and don't recall any dialogue wheels. Then again, that one wasn't using the Bioware engine so I guess that should make sense. :p

Oh come on, just because they don't put the 3 or 4 abbreviated dialogue choices on a wheel doesn't mean the mechanics isn't the exactly the same, you still pick one of the choices and then wait to see what the character actually says.

Have not listened to the gb cast yet but I saw Jeff playing on his twitter and considering he hates star wars it is really no suprise.

Not sure fully later on how deep some go, but in the character storyline quests you do have quest chains that are affected in how they play out depending on your choices. Most of the world generic side quest stuff has no consequences though based on your choices for the most part, but at times you do get optional paths of how to complete a quest. Majority of quests and dialgoue choices are linear, but there are some parts that do have consequences/changes based on what you do. Group content has various ways the flashpoint can go depending on choices made or even based on players having certain skills

Let me expand on this point.

For the Jedi Knight, there are two separate scenarios that can play out with Watcher One. The first being if you're a lighside Jedi, there is a completely separate mission to stop a Sith from killing a bunch of colonists. If you're Darkside then you get sent to a tomb to kill this Sith and get a sweetass purple crystal. You don't choose which one you want to do, this is automatically determined based on past actions. Admittedly most of the impact is dialogue lines and now emails ala ME2(something I knew people were going to bitch about the moment I saw them). Another example being the Sith Warrior and a choice you have to make regarding someone you have to silence can make the quest play out slightly different. Also some of the sidequests can play out completely different depending on what you choose for example the Rakghoul cure you have to get from some pirates.

today's giant bombcast did not speak favorable of star wars. its the very first discussion on the podcast if you want to listen

Sounds like he doesn't like MMOs in general.

So clearly, they wouldn't like a MMO based on Star Wars.

WHERE did the HUGE budget this game has translate to?
i don't get the feeling this is some "high end OMG no expenses spared" kinda game?

Who actually gives a shit about the budget? I mean seriously.

Did you really just make this statement about something in the same universe that I exist in? Budget is everything. Everything revolves around money. They spent so much money on this game, but it just doesn't show in the final quality of the product. People have expectations based on facts like this, and SWTOR isn't living up to those expectations for a great many people.

Listening to the Bombcast talking about TOR then listening to Gamers With Jobs discussing it, it sounds like they're talking about two wholly different games.

Maybe it's just me but the last thing I think about when playing the game is how large the budget is.

Damn i just noticed you cannot pre-order the game anymore on Amazon.co.uk :(

wtf maybe they ran out of copies/early access keys since they only want SO many people playing at launch?

So, the box for the physical CE is a cube. One side has Malgus, Zallow poses on another, and Shae Vizla graces a third side. Have we seen the fourth side? I zoomed in on a high res image of it, but it just looked like a placeholder explosion. I would hope it would be a Republic character, but only Shatele and T7 have been named specifically. I guess it's most likely the Trooper, to counter the Shae.

Forgot to mention one thing I hated about the past weekend was the number of people undressing their companions. Seeing dozens of people doing that is rather annoying.

I hope there will be some sort of dont show other peoples companions option in the future.

Did not really notice anything like that on the German server i was on during the weekend.

This is just a graphics bug. Just like being able to hear companions talking from across the zone is another huge bug.

Wait what? Is there a source for this? The companion voice thing was obviously a bug.

I was once asked why my companion was in their underwear when for me they weren't, so I've always presumed it was a bug.

This.

I played with a group of friends during the beta and we all had this problem from time to time when our companions were obviously fully geared.

Anoregon

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
You know it's a bug when you start seeing male sith warriors running around with Malavai Quinn in his underwear.

So how much of a clusterfuck is their 'staggered' early access policy going to end up? I can't possibly see any positive things that can come from artificially restricting when you give access to a game based on when people bought it. There are lots of bad responses/feelings that can grow from that sort of policy.

I understand the benefit is to spread people out in all of the different zones so they don't get really laggy starter zones but what ends up happenning is after the first day you have people who move at different paces and that separation happens naturally.

How would it be a clusterfuck outside of some sour grapes from folks who don't get in earlier than others?

Initial release of an mmo is the time you want to curb negative reactions to your game especially through word of mouth. No matter how fake and irrational it might be any negative opinions about your game before it's even been released is bad for sales.

It's not me personally, I'm sure I won't be in the first day or two at all. But anyone that's played a lot of MMO's knows the way that audience works and how excessive and overeactionary it can be.

There's far more positive than negative out there. TOR will do fine. It's the first three months people need to watch and see what happens. Wither you go in Day 1 or not.

I don't see how this will be a negative, they have also been clear how the early access is going to work. Most negative issues with MMO's deal with actual game problems. So far from the betas the game doesn't seem to have any major issues, so that's a good thing.

Staggered early release will also help them hopefully get out severs rollings to meet demand for launch, as with the open weekend they had to keep adding servers to accomodate all the players and deal with the waits.

14/25/2 Operative (Concealment/Medic/Lethality) is the best for all things. 100% throughput at healing (Minus an aoe heal but if you want to do that I'd suggest a BH healer), free backstabs, great crowd control, access to one of the best DPA attacks in the game without having to shiv to use it, max movement speed and stealth value, etc.

the smuggler version of that is probably just as good but then you have to be a smuggler.

I'm convinced Laceration/Collateral Strike is going to get moved up in the trees within a week of release.

How do you usually approach enemies in PvP or a fairly challenging mob?

I got very confused after using primarily cover & snipe in the beginning and then choosing Operative after Hutta. I couldn't decide if I was going to attack from cover or take them head-on after a stealthed backstab. I was thinking IA's are under-armored and would take a lot of damage when going upclose.

I am in the general testing group, but I haven't touched the beta since September.

Have they implemented any sort of UI scaling yet?

(crosses fingers)

It's really my only complaint currently. I posted it in the feedback forums multiple times.

No, no UI Scaling yet.

No Moveable windows yet.

In some cases, the game is really behind the times lol

I'm just glad the default UI is pretty decent and sleek/simple. I remember the WoW UI I used(LUI I think?) was pretty similar to the default UI in this game. Having health bear at the bottom is much better

The UI is nice I think, but they really need to give players options and choice in the UI.

But it is freaking huge, I don't need this big UI elements. Basic UI Settings all MMOs now need to have:

1. UI Scaling
2. Moveable Windows/UI Elements
3. Resizable Windows
4. Health/Mana/Energy text on bars

It's probably a bit touch and go early on before you get into the medic tree and get decent hots/self heals (that's how I would level solo, getting that hot will make life so easy, especially when it's giving you tactical advantages for healing you and your companion). Open with backstab, corrosive dart then alternate shiv/overload shot (which is buffed for operatives). You have debilitate and flashbang to deal with bad situations as well.

You could try to go straight for laceration in the concealment tree if you want to kill faster but you'll be very squishy. A lot depends on how you intend to play. I'll be healing for a group a lot so getting the heals is high priority; if you were soloing a lot I'd probably go for the damage stuff earlier.

I think the biggest weakness is that IA's don't get a true stealth opener until 36. Backstab is a pain because of positional requirements; they're a lot easier to pull off in PVP though and getting to energy free backstabs can give you a lot of free damage in pvp situations where your target is distracted.

4 is already in the game under the options. I agree with the others though.

Too bad the UI/key binding customization keeps reseting over the weekend. Even preferences have the tendency to stop working after a crash or logoff. Bioware took a big step back during this phase of testing.
