Is Australian actor Matthew Newton going to a Galaxy Far, Far Away?

According to The Sunday Herald Sun - quite possibly.

George Lucas has done an 'availability check' on the young actor - the son of TV legend, Bert - to see if he's free for his upcoming 100 episode "Star Wars" TV series.

Lucas first met Newton a few years ago when the Australian actor - whose credits include "Queen of the Damned" and "Blurred" - tested for the role of Anakin Skywalker in "Star Wars Episode II : Attack of the Clones".

It's believed that Newton was Lucas's second choice for the part of the gung-ho Jedi in training. He even was flown to stay at the Lucasfilm ranch to test.

Blonde-haired newton Newton, 28, is no doubt being considered for a leading hero role in the series, believed to be centering on all-new characters, and not necessarily those in the money-spinning film series.

"Star Wars" wouldn't be the first science-fiction show that Newton has been involved in. He played Ka Jothee in "Farscape", several years ago.

A friend of mine was at the TRL Skywalker Ranch charity screening for Episode III and while there, Donald Faison was bugging George for a part in the series and Lucas said the lead role has already been cast...

So Bounty Hunters is the premise? Or what? Cause that would rock. But i honestly would much rather see a show that doesnt revolve around the movie time line, but before the movies.

With the current sad-ass state of network television, this show is going to be HUGE for ratings.

Have they even announced what network is getting it?

My money is on UPN. If a local network gets it though it will be huge.

i want it to focus on Vader ruling along side sidious with an iron fist. screw this new character stuff, just focus on vader.

I could live with it being on totally new characters, as long as we get a few cameos from time to time. I'd want to see Vader here and there, and certainly I'd like to hear news of what's going on in the galaxy to see how things evolve between the third and fourth episodes. Perhaps the orgins of the Rebellion, hunting down the last of the Jedi, mindlessly hunting Ewoks, etc.

We can only hope and pray that it doesn't land there. Fox has made some of the most idiotic decisions in the history of broadcasting.

Fox would probably put the show on Friday, then move it a week lately to Thursday against CSI, then cancel the show because it failed to get more then a 9.3 rating. :lol

I think that fans of any franchise kinda shoot themselves in the foot with their wishing. As a fan you want to hear more about whats happening when, how something works or how every relationship relates to another. They crave this and when it gets given, the mystery is gone, there is nothing left to crave and there is no satisfaction. I don't want to know everything that happens between episodes III and IV of starwars.

Look a the Matrix for example...awesome film, give the fan Reloaded and Revolutions...no matter how awesome they could have been, it takes away mystery, you know what Zion is, you know how the people born out of the matrix live and the matrix and the machines become all too familiar, way too familiar for there to be any mystery anymore.

I think that Lucas should just leave it now. Those craving more can read the Extended Universe. I think he should get a series going set in the same universe but in a altogether new time period, bring back the mystery and the magic of starwars again. Give us something to wonder about again.

WHO DEY!?
All Lucas has said is it will feature ancillary characters from the movies, so I would not expect any familiar faces unless it is May sweeps.

I don't necessarily disaagree with you here. I'm a huge Star Wars fan for sure, but I'm not sure a live action TV show is a great idea. I'd really hate to see it go the way of Star Trek, which has pretty much run itself into the ground. And, given a choice, I'd rather see the series set after Return of the Jedi, not between the two trilogies. I don't need to see everything spelled out for me either, which is why I said I'd like to see new characters, but I would like to be kept abreast of what is going on in the galaxy around these characters. To know their place in it. Star Wars has a history, and no matter what time it's set in, we want to know how everything relates.

I'll disagree. The show is a good idea for two reasons.

It can deliver the show like X-files did. Meaning, they had episodic stories mostly, with an overall continuing story arc for others. They could set the story around a distant "rebel" base (Similar to DS9) and still sprinkle in segments/episodes that contribute to the bigger events. It would keep you hooked waiting for the next part (kind of like "the smoking man" did for X-files).

It's probably the last chance for any future Star Wars movies. If the TV show is a breakout hit and spawns some new stars/characters ... it could spark interest in Lucas to go through the process again (or at least grant permission to someone else). I would love to see the Star Wars universe in the hands of someone else.

A huge 20th Century Fox/Lucasfilm show not on a Newscorp/Fox station? That would be the coup of the century. Fox would have to just not want to show it as I'm sure they have some legal bias in their favor for carrying it.
