Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

There isn't any racials persay...racial armour which you can obtain all other races via trading..

right?

If so..prob Floran.

Yep, but whether or not it's just a matter of some other player handing you the armor for the materials hasn't been clarified yet (afaik). I think the race aesthetics are vastly more important when it comes to choosing the right race for you, but if I had to guess, the interracial armor acquiring is more of a mid-game thing than something you can do within the first hour. At least, I certainly hope so - it'd make the race choice feel more meaningful since they have no inherent abilities.

SJRB:

Armor will have different benefits depending on the race it belongs to:

Avian: Allows you to glide.
Apex: Allows faster running capabilities and higher leaps, greatly increasing mobility.
Floran: Allows absorption of sunlight.
(At the moment, it is unsure whether this means health, food, or energy.)
Human: Allows you to carry more items.
Hylotl: Allows you to breathe underwater and swim faster.
Glitch: Allows you to mine faster.

The armor gives these abilities, not the race itself. It is likely that players will have to be wearing a complete set to gain these abilities. As the player progresses through the game, they will be able to craft other race's armors and gain their abilities, but at the start players may only craft their own race's armor.

What's the difference, aside from appearance?

What's the difference in the racial armor you mean? Appearance, like you said, as well as racial themed abilities that are tied to the gear. Avian, for example, gives some form of flight (IIRC)

I'm so gonna start out with a Floran. Carnivorous plants FTW.

It's evil that the release of this and the Broken Sword launch livestream coincide. I wonder which gaming deity I pissed off to deserve that.

Aha, good to know. Just from looking at that list, I'd probably carry a Glitch set for mining and an Apex set for travel and bosses.

So what race is everybody going?

Was leaning towards the Glitch because "Retro" seems appropriate for an anachronistic robot, and since I tend to build castles their crafting track (assuming those still exist / are in the beta) would be ideal.

Then I found a human hair style that kinda looks like me and realized maybe a robot wouldn't look exactly the way I want.

Chances are good I'll end up with a ton of characters anyways, just like Guild Wars 2.

Are we going to have a separate thread for server/game or do we just post our server/game info in this one ?

I'll put any servers people want listed at the top the OT so they're easy to find. They'll be hidden in e-mail quotes so only GAFers can see them, as we've had some issues in the past with non-GAFers listing our server info on public databases at which point 400 fucking people show up and start throwing dynamite, looting chests, etc. Lots of people play these games only to grief.

If you don't want it listed in the OT, or you'd rather post when your server is up or down, I'd highly recommend using e-mail tags. Quote this post to see how they work, the example will be right at the top.

Also, as a reminder for those who will be streaming; be sure to stop streaming when entering address / passwords for other peoples' servers! Wait to start streaming until after you connect, put up a title card, whatever, but remember that whoever is hosting probably doesn't want their server info displayed!

Is there gonna be a GAF server that we can play on?

Yes, though considering it's a Beta and we don't know exactly how things work yes, it may take a bit. HaRyu did an awesome job hosting for Terraria and has offered to do the same for SB.

So is there a definitive info resource for this game yet? Like a good wiki or something? How do you guys know what bonuses each race gets you?

Some people have been following the game for 2 years and just sort of know... things.

There's a couple wikis up, so far the best seems to be http://starbounder.org, which is actually linked in the OT. The developers have mentioned they want to get an official Wiki up soon though.

That said, half the fun of games like this is exploration and being surprised by what you discover. Think of it like Star Trek; you have a huge universe to explore. "Boldly go where no one has gone before", versus "kinda go where the guy who edited the wiki was last Tuesday." Different folks for different strokes, but I'd rather find things out on my own.

Just bought it in the Humble store! A question though, and sorry if it has been answered already, but will Beta progress carry over to the final release?

Yes, this. I love exploration in gaming, so this is like digital crack to me. Just go off in an uncharted direction and whatever happens, happens.

No. In fact expect to lose all your shit several times during the beta itself. It's an actual beta, not a hey-come-play-the-game-early beta.

Just don't forget to bring enough fuel to get back. I've seen more than a few streamers freeze to death on ice planets with no way of getting home.

In space, no one can hear you herpaderp.

I unfortunately have work ,so won't be able to get server up until I get home.

Godspeed to all of you who can get to play it before me.

Starbound more important than work

I was watching someone stream who was playing as a glitch, and at nighttime a meter with a sun icon popped up at the bottom of the screen and started to deplete. When he beamed back up to his ship it refilled. Anyone have any idea what that was about?

I think thats warmth meter. Need to keep the character warm when temps drop.

Can someone clarify whether the beta will have a standalone/do not have to connect to a server/play with yourself cos you are in a grumpy mood mode ? I will of course enjoy playing with the fine gentlemen and ladies of GAF but now and again there are times I like to go all emo and just play not online if you see what I mean.

I think I've seen people play alone on streams.

NG28: A fireplace or a torch help stave off the cold embrace of death. If your warmth meter depletes completely you get a DoT debuff that can kill you.

Pretty sure you can play by yourself.

and the universe's will be the same? Or completely different? Will what you do online carry over to offline?

Universes and world's are all random, but they did mention that there may be some planets that are hard coded to specific coordinates.

Unless a server specifies it, you can use the same character online and offline.
