Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Welp I packed everything up ready for #Wipe2013

Made some great progress tonight and got some awesome weapons way above my current tier. Hope its safe!

This game is way too damn good.

Here's my storage bunker:

Here's my band "Divide by Zero" playing our one hit song: "Canon in D":

LOL thats an awesome bunker

Is there any way to get a grappling hook like in terraria?
It's so weird playing this game and trying to mine without being able to stick to walls.
It's called climbing rope - some fibre and some iron bars. 1 time use, so not worth it really.

My home (still progress) which hopefully won't be gone tomorrow but probably will

I found a tiny robot house guarded by two robots and found a guitar inside. And proceeded to jam after stealing it(literally it plays a song). This game is great.

I spent a good 2-3 hours downloading ABC songs from fatlute and abclotro and checking them, renaming them for clarity (why do they have such short names?), deleting the ones that weren't recognizable and such. There's some awesome stuff there. When I'm done, I'll make a bundle with them and upload them so that people can just unzip it to their /songs folder.

You can download .abc files (thefatlute.eu is a good place to look) and put them in the songs folder to play custom tracks. One of their "Random Weekend Projects" one of their programmers implemented.

It's so crazy to think about it, it's an AMAZING feature. I want it in all my multiplayer games, especially GW2.

The hair mods I have so far. Not sure that these work 100% since I haven't been able to test each of them with various head gear in the game. You can choose them in the character creation screen and they seem to work fine in game.

OK, that is some amazing god tier stuff. Not only do I love them, if you hadn't told me I would have thought they were in the game all along. When you have a bunch of them, I think it might be worth a shot sending them to the developers for official inclusion, if you want. In the meantime, inclusion of your latest bundle in the OP is a must, I think.

Knowing that I am not long for this existence, I beam away from the last planet I will explore, and leave behind artifacts in the hopes that they can help some future explorer:

The Reapers are coming, fellow Prothean.

Awesome, you can travel together? What happens with you personal ship? Does it follow you?

Better yet, it remains where it was so you can port between both planets for free. In a party with N players, you have acces to N different planets without spending one fuel.

By the way, teleportation is also instant, which, I just noticed, dispels the notion that the FTL animation is used to mask loading times.

OKAY, so I finally got a chance to play this game today, for about eight hours? Yeah, that's eight hours straight by the way...

Starbound is damn fun. I'm not even off of my starting planet yet. Took me forever to walk all the way around it, either my starting planet is just huge or these are very big maps. Had a few neat encounters on the surface: two different merchants, three bandit camps, and a huge temple with gun toting avians. Also found some sewage treasure room, didn't realize that the
green goo on the floor was poisonous
, lol. Also dug down a good ways, tunneled into a huge empty cavern with a sand floor and pixel canisters all over the place.

So I died a lot, mined a lot, collected a lot of nice booty and treasure, and I'm not even off of my Level 1 starter planet.

This game is going to eat up all of my free time, I can just see it now...

Sounds pretty much like me, I played 9 hours straight today. I had no idea about how to play this(never got into Terraria, but I will now) and had to learn all the basics, and I didn't really get that far but fuck I enjoyed it.

FRIENDLY REMINDER:

-There is a really high possibility of character and world wipes at any time!
-This is a REAL BETA, shit will break and shit will break hard. So expect things to break at the least opportune moment.
-Report any bugs and crashes you may have, this will help the dev fix them.
-Try and avoid posting things that may be too spoilery (Including Screenshots) in the mean time. ie you played for many many hours consecutively and you found some really cool mid/late game thing. If you must post something, use the spoiler tags please.
-Yes, there is a GAF server for multiplayer, thanks HaRyu!!! Quote the OP to find the server info and password hidden behind Email tags.

Remember that the game just came out and a lot of its enjoyment is exploration. Give everyone a chance to play the game and see stuff on their own. This way, people will know they wont get spoiled and keep coming to the thread to talk.

Thank you!

at which point should i try and call the distress beacon? i know i'll have to fight a ufo when i did use it

i've left my starting planet, and pressed random until i found a threat level 2 planet
i'm using littletooth and basic shield, i also have iron hunting bow
my armors are the snow infantry set

thinking of leaving this planet to try out some random threat level 3 planet
still haven't found any tech, pet, legendary :(
not sure if it's because i never fully check all the caves that i come accross
generally if a cave goes too far down below i'll just skip it

halp a noob ; ;

Good strategy for the UFO:

Penguins aint shit

You can do it the traditional way but I would recommend having a gun or bombs before fighting it.

If you guys want this tech

I heard this tech is kinda op in terms of movement :p

Thanks a lot! I've done a few more, but I'll probably wait until I get some human/avian/apex ones to update it.

Also, I decided to try my hand at armor creation. This is pretty much just a skin for the base kimono armor that you can choose for hylotl (it has the same stats and I've made it so it can be chosen at the start). It looks more like a traditional kimono and has the skirt part open rather than stay closed.

Hair and beard mod for the apex ladies!

Okay, I'm out for the night (morning?)

Are you posting these on the Starbound forum/Reddit? CF definitely checks them frequently, I think your work is great and I'm sure a lot would like to see it implemented in game.

Hoooly crap. Loved it in the still pics but it's amazing in motion. Some mad pixel art skills there for sure.

IF you mod something does it appear in other peoples games or does it need to be installed by everyone?

Like, if I changed my Beam colour to blue would people see it as red or blue? Or if I added a hairstyle? Would they see whatever it replaced (if it replaced one) or the default?

That would be awesome! I downloaded some from the lotro site, there are some that crash the game and the filenames are all a mess. A nice neat bundle would make it oodles easier to use. :)

Alright, I feel like worlds will be wiped too with the update (I know they will be eventually anyway), but just in case they stay, I spruced up my house a bit and, uh, got enough chests for it all. Of course there's food in the fridge and drinks/stimpacks in the coke machine. :P

Right now, those kinds of changes won't show up for anyone else because you're changing your local files, or using local graphics. I think the effects will still stay, like if you changed mining speed of something, but if you changed the color it would only change for you. In the future, I believe they're planning on some way to download content from a server, such as how Valve games do it. That way, the server owner can put in mods/graphics/etc and everyone on that server will be able to use them.

Some time tomorrow, maybe later, a large update will completely change planet levels, enemy levels and how weapons deal damage, no more about penetration, and will result in characters being wiped. The assumption is though that the universe well stay intact so if you put all your stuff on a planet and write down its location it well be there for your new character post patch/wipe.
This is a very unrealistic assumption to make, considering what the update is changing. I suppose it doesn't hurt to stash your stuff, but you should expect everything to get wiped.

Question for those who are currently using the GAF server, and also open to those who plan to play on it at some point:

If I was to move the server over to some sort of dedicated hosting, how many players max do we want to be able to support?

Yeah, I know. Thing is, there's a huge amount of them. Right now I'm using the player from the very LOTRO site to quickly check which songs are worth trying in the game and which aren't. This is especially useful when using Fat Lute, as you can actually paste the song's text in the player, listen to it, then save it with the name you want as a .abc.

Just now I've listened to what must be the most perfect rendition ever of a song; Wood Carving Partita from Symphony of the Night. Playing it in the ABC player with "lute" as the instrument, it sounds almost literally the same as its game counterpart:

Is this same as the actual grappling hook they were working on?

No, that one is a quick one-use version they put on the beta not long ago. The grappling hook is permanent.

Edit: Fuck yes, a good version of Bloody Tears at last. The other ones I got were terrible. Let's hope both this and Wood Carving Partita work out fine in Starbound.

Anyone else having the problem recently that it needs a few tries to teleport on a new planet?

Never had the problem before the new update.

If you're encountering that, you need to wait it out a bit.

What's happening is that the game always loads and unloads areas/planets based on need (in other words, it doesnt load the whole universe, just whatever planets players are on at the time). Sometimes though, when you go to teleport, you're actually moving faster than the game, in other words, it cant keep up and load the world on time.

If you're running a server, you can verify this easily by keeping the server window open while you play. As soon as the glitch kicks in, look at the server window, you'll see its busy trying to load the world.

I believe this will occur more frequently on servers with a lot of players, because if all of a sudden, 10 people want to teleport down to a planet at the exact same time, the server is going to nuts, since it can only load one planet at a time. This can probably still occur in a SP game too, its just a matter of you moving faster than the game.

Almost 24 hours of playtime, and soon a fresh start with the wipe.
The wait for this game was well worth it, it can only improve now.

I'd say at least 100 to start with. We might not ever reach that number but with as popular as the game is right now it would be good to have a high cap instead of a low one to start off with.

I got this game last night finally and played it a bunch with some friends. There's a lot to love about the game, but holy damn. That matter manipulator upgrading to a pickaxe is maybe the biggest bullshit I've ever seen in a video game. Would anybody really be upset if you started out with something that could cut down trees and mine simple materials in a fraction of the time? This is, far and away, the biggest reason I hated Terraria despite playing it for about 20 hours (yes, I'm aware that's a nothingth of the time that a lot of people spend on the game, I didn't have it in me to click on blocks for 40 more hours to get 10 more hours of real exploration and gameplay). I was really hoping the sci-fi setting would eliminate that tedium from the game.

I thought this game was amazing, but I went out last night with a friend to explore my starter planet and... damn. Amazing doesn't begin to cover it.

I'm really not sure on this. Have you been able to get an accurate headcount of at least how many unique character names have logged in? It's really hard to tell how many people are on the server just as a client connected to it. Not even an X disconnected or connected message yet.

Yeah the matter manipulator really needs to be made faster.

Amazing work Lissar! I have a feeling we'll see them officially in game soon if thats okay with you (I assume it is!) They've mentioned before about taking what people do and trying to put it in where they can.

Small update about the update. Interesting.

I'd say a 100 for now as well but VandalD makes a good point. Maybe while the game is still in Beta you could make the cap at a 100 but once it's officially released up the player cap to 150 or 200. Not sure how hard it is to do that though.

Nope, havent been able to get an accurate headcount. My best estimate is around 30 at one time, but can't say for sure. I'm just considering a dedicated server, and planning things out ahead of time. I really don't want to actually start the dedicated server up until we're out of beta, or at least, late into the beta (3rd Phase).

Game is pretty fun even though I don't really know what I'm doing but one problem I have with it is that the matter manipulator is way too slow. It's fun using it (I like that I can aim with it properly, unlike with a pickaxe), how about making it better?

holding down shift while you use the pickaxe allows you to do single blocks only If thats what you're looking for.

it could be better and I think they even talked about that recently. personally I'm glad its not just as fast for mining, it would make the game easier in too many ways.
