"Star Fox: Assault has its moments, though it often feels like a missed opportunity. While Namco can hardly be blamed for not wanting to remake Star Fox 64, it's where Assault deviates from its space-shooting roots that it begins to fly off the rails. The ground-based missions aren't terrible, but they aren't as good as the highly entertaining aerial missions, and they do happen to make up half the game. Overall, Star Fox: Assault is a game worth playing. It may have its blemishes, but it can also be a lot of fun, and you'll likely enjoy what it has to offer."

It sounds alright.

I'd like one of these reviews to qualify the game against Starfox Adventures. In depth. Cos that game was a bit "meh" to me -- but all I really want is a game that is any amount better than that. Also, are these on-foot missions of the Rebel Strike variety or better than that?

My own tastes have been at odds with reviews too. I may give it a rent.

"...where Assault deviates from its space-shooting roots that it begins to fly off the rails."

Nice word play.

Nintendo should have just let Amusement Vision do WaveRace and Starfox along with FZero. With the huge gaps in between all their release dates, AV could have easily handled the load, and i think all 3 probably would have turned out amazing (as FZeroGX already did.)

Treasure should've handled starfox *points at sin & punishment*, speaking of which, where is S&P DS goddamnit >_<

The review echoes my feelings exactly. It's decent, but a little extra care or even putting it into different hands (EAD or AV) might've done wonders for the game.

I really think the multiplayer is great in this game. And I never could get into it in Star Fox 64.

I am so thankful to Nintendo for the rental program on this stinker. The game is slightly above average at its best (on-rails shooter parts) and mediocre and below mediocre on the others.

Save your money for something better. Better yet, if you have an Xbox get PDO, or if you have a PS2, get Rez.

If Nintendo wanted some extra copies sold they shouldn't have made this a rental 2 weeks earlier. Probably a stupid move by them, but good for us gamers indeed.

Too bad about the starfox franchise. Starfox snes and Starfox 64 were two of my favorites :/

Exactly. If I would have paid $50 I would have felt ripped off. Glad for the rental opportunity.
I agree completely. It was worth the seven bucks I paid to rent it and it will be worth it when it hits $20.

This game never looked a worthy starfox 64 sequal to me.

I think Smilebit or AV would have done a better job.

God damn it, GameCube sequels of Nintendo classics continue to dissapoint me.

First Mario, then Zelda, then Mario Kart, now Starfox.

The only exception being Metroid of course.

That would've been incredible. 1080, too.

Same here. It seems like a decent game for $20.

Still, I can't help but feel really let down by this. Starfox 64 was one of my favorite games last gen, and I've been looking forward to this sequel for a long time. It's very disappointing that this game, while a bit above average in its own right, doesn't even approach Starfox 64 territory.

I don't think it was stupid. I wouldn't be surprised if they came to the realization that the game would probably do better as a rental because of it's brevity and the fact that it's not really mind blowing.

So on the Nintendo Fanboy scale this is an underappreciated gem goty 2005

It's instant "recommend me some games for my gamecube i found in my closet" material, that's for sure.

I'm in your boat except I stopped playing Metriod Prime after a really fun plant boss.
I got it the first day it came out. Problem is I get to many damn games the first day the come out.

All this Starfox buzz made me pick up a copy of Starfox 64 on ebay ($7 w/ box and book shipped!) - but I decided to pass on Assault.

Ah, while I do enjoy most games no matter how disappointing they can be to others, such as xenosaga 2, Starfox Assault was pretty disappointing. :/ I suppose Starfox64 was just that godly. But for what SFAssault is, it's decent, it just really could have been more. Glad that nintendo gave us the option of being able to rent it early. Now I'm just questioning if I should really cancel my preorder or get it anyway.

Better yet, Nintendo should just poach Nagoshi and his team for EAD Tokyo. Then let them get started on Wave Race Revolution. :)

I like Wave Race Blue Storm. More than F Zero GX, definetly!

That is all.

Is this commercial Reggie's doing also? If so good show. Keep 'em coming I say.

How off am I in thinking that the ground missions are a spin on Jet Force Gemini gameplay? I understand the expectations on a Starfox game but are the ground missions solid or just crappy filler material? Cuz they kinda remind me of JFG and I loved that game at the time.
