Starhawk |OT| Not Quite Warhawk, Yet Not Quite Like Anything Else

Nothing is more satifying than running into a game when your team aggressively captures the flag.

I feel like the Build n Battle influences too much of a decensive stance sometimes.

I find myself, at least in CTF, working on remote base construction and keeping the pressure on the enemy. I was always a big support player in Warhawk, capturing bases and escorting players when running to and fro the enemy flag, and I think it's translating well into my experiences with Starhawk so far.

If anyone is still on the fence with Starhawk, here is my review! :)

Also, if anyone wants to coordinate a time that we can all play together would awesome since we have the NeoGAF clan in order. I'm off work tomorrow at 5, and I think I'm going to wait on picking up Max Payne 3 so I've got that night to Starhawk.

Are you EST? I'd be available around 5 est as well.

Also, great review. Although Warhawk wasn't a launch title, it came nearly a year later (end of August '07). =P

Finished the SP tonight. Yeah it was on the shorter side but it didn't overstay it's welcome

It was fucking great

I like how it feels oldschool. "Here's your mission, have fun." Instead of "Here's your mission. *bingbangboom with little control* Wasn't that fun?"

someone said it earlier and i really agree: the single player really feels like an adult Starfox at times. now there is more stuff going on obviously but it was really enjoyable

Picked this up last night. Loving the campaign. Loved the horde mode + building in co-op.

But once I got in a competitive match, or a number of matches actually - it fell apart. Not because of the gameplay, but because losing teams just quit so literally every single match I was in last night was completely one sided.

I love server lists, creating custom games and all of that - and I typically lament that this gen is all quick-match CPU decides the settings... but this game actually makes a good argument that console gamers can't handle having the choice themselves because they don't self police. When a server is 18 on 4, like one game I was in last night, and no one switches over because they are too concerned about their precious stats... it's a problem.

I love the game though and will stick with it, eventually the community will settle into something that works better, im sure. But i can guarantee that how this game is currently playing out online it's not making very many new fans.

I'd probably give it closer to an 8/10 but I still enjoyed the hell out of it. One of my favorite games of the year.

If they nerf cluster bombs against ground troops, what would they be good against? They don't do very good damage to buildings and can be hard to use against vehicles.

I don't get that nerf, clusterbombs in Warhawk against ground troops killed you about 90-95% of the time. And that's regardless of if you were at full health, why would it need to be nerfed?

It was way over power in Warhawk.
...

It's a large cluster of bombs. Against humans. The bombs themselves are like 1/3rd the size of the troops...

HOW DO YOU OVERPOWER THAT?

A large amount a mini-bombs explode right next to you in real life, you're lucky to survive. In a game where real life physics/hit damage can get really wonky, that's one thing Warhawks nails.

What would have been cool with the going from a warhawk to a mech is being in first person mode in the mech with a awesome full screen heads up display.

Good call. Its not the easiest thing to do though in regards to engaging with the community. I'm the Multiplayer Designer at Epic Games and let me tell you, the community is awesome but definitely has its fair share of clowns that personally attack you for not doing 'X' etc.

Side note, does anyone know how Starhawk's Clan Battles work? I really want to give that feature a full run through.

yeah i've had this a few times, it's a pain to suddenly be getting completely locked down at spawn and discover it's because there's 3 people left on your team and 16 on the other.

I am officially smitten. I still have the same issue with it that i mentioned several posts up... it's more punishing to shitty teams than most. I've had quite a few matches where our one spawn is just surrounded by tanks bombarding the shit out of us. But, when that isn't happening, this is one of the funnest online shooters I've played in a long time. I love that it's a mix of completely over the top action with shit blowing up everywhere, really fast firefights with flying vehicles overhead, speeder bikes, tanks, everything... but then it's juxtaposed with the whole base building aspect which adds a layer of strategy that you just don't find in shooters anymore.

It's so good. I am not, however. I'm afraid to look at my stats but that's probably for the best. This doesn't seem like a good game to obsess over KDR in. I'm a pretty decent defender and auxiliary base builder. I'm not so good at killing ;)

I've only played the co-op twice so far (with Fooman and a few others...NeoStar9X is me) but I've enjoyed that a lot more then the normal multiplayer. That's fun in own right but gets old real fast if things go badly at the start.

I wouldn't mind if they put out more of these co-op maps or even just solo versions like the single player. Have to remember to keep my headset next my system.

having played through most of the co-op stuff now I'd like if they added a bit of randomness, or variety in missions (ie. not just defend the rift). Something like L4D's AI Director system.

God damn the Homings need a buff. Dogfights right now are all about who picks up the Flak and spams it first in CQC. Its more OP than uncharged lightning in Warhawk. At least I still got ocassional kills with swarms and homings even against veteran aces in Warhawk but there's point to homings in Starhawk at all. They're dodged before it even picks up the boost.

Agreed. They take forever to pick up any speed and are easily dodged.

Has anyone else been kicked by a host? I was doing really well in a game earlier and a message popped up saying I had been kicked by the host. So they can just boot you anytime they want or what?

Clan features are one thing that made Warhawk/Starhawk stand out and I really think its part of the reason why these games have the most active competitive scene for a shooter on the PS3.

Once you accept a clan's invite, you get a tag automatically besides your name, you can visit your clan's in-game home page, check the member list and join anyone's game from there, and no two clans can have the same tag. I haven't seen these clan features in the most mainstream of shooters and it really surprises me, as people just tend to make commitments to clans on internet forums then forget about it in-game.

For clan battles, the way it worked in Warhawk was the host could assign the two clan tags for the teams, and only the people from those two clans could join the server. Either that or you could just make an unranked password protected room, and give out the password to all those who are supposed to be playing. I'm pretty sure Starhawk would have similar setup. Oh yeah and people can just create their own rooms/servers, which is what makes all of this possible.

Holy shit, it is impossible to have fun in this game if your just a person who wants to do a quick match?

Everytime its the same thing. Beaten to shit by an opposing team inside the spawn, noticing its 4 on 20, or even worse kiling the "wrong person" and getting kicked. Worse yet is the tank spammign the base from a mile away while the Starhawk spams clusters, while foot soldiers are firing rockets at you as they eat up mutiple clips like your shooting marshmellows.

I even tried dog fights...I didnt get a single kill! And yet, even sucking terribly I only died maybe 3 times cause all I did was spin and boost.
I honestly thought i would get destroyed in air like I would if I would take a break from WH and then go back and have to go against the vet pilots, but instead I kinda just zipped around and shot missles that did nothing.

Also, I have to ask since Im still a bit clueless about this, are the beam turrets auto? They fire on shit un-manned? Wondering cause I saw a team drop a base near the spawn point base and they just loaded it with turrets and crushed anything in the air. I know Ive hopped in a turet before and it seems like they have a healthy amount of auto-aim or something, pretty much fire in that directin and it hits?

Also with vehicles like tanks? Is there a limit? I just seems like everyone dies and then spawns a new tank...then you have full teams tank drivers showering shells non-stop. Couple guy push in and destroy everything and everyone while a few sit back and rain hell on the base from a mile away.

Think its just time for me to pack it in and hope I see a true sequel to Warhawk :(
If I enjoyed playing single player games or had friends to play co-op with it might be a different story but as it stands now I just cant enjoy death loops in mutiplayer...dont get me wrong, I'd love to be on the side of a winning team making a server empty every round -_- sounds like a blast...

Last thing I just have to ask...didnt they Beta the F***k out this game? Like 6 months? How can you have glaring blance issues then? Sure exploits are common when you introduce millions more to find them, but balance issues are pretty clear cut even if you have 100k players right?

looks like auto-balance is turned off in the server?

I want the Hawks to have the ability to hover. That and force every game to be auto balanced. It's no fun being stuck in your base because your team is outnumbered 3 to 1.

Absolutely love this game. Only real complaint so far is the ease with which a match can become imbalanced, especially team death match. All it takes is one team getting a jump on the other and then it becomes a non stop base rape. Not sure why in TDM the map layout is just two bases on opposite ends of the map. Recipe for disaster IMO. I watched 2 or 3 guys own an entire other team with a tank and some hawks. If your defenses get taken down the enemy can just camp your base and obliterate anyone who spawns before they can get anything built . Seems like there should be spawns spread all over the place for TDM. That way you at least have a chance to spawn back in and get some stuff built elsewhere and maybe tip the balance back a bit.

Maybe today will be the day where I can play my first 4 bar game. I constantly get grouped with Asians wtf and sever list shows only servers with 2-3 bars. Let me play with people from my continent god dammit.

Hi tusken!

Hello mate. :)

I think you were playing surprisingly well considering you were being distracted by answering all kinds of gaming questions.

God I suck at this game. So overwhelming. The second I spawn, there are a millions different stations falling from the sky to the point where everything just ends up in front of the base.

Still fun though. I wanna get my hawk skills up so I can provide better air support.

What role does everyone tend to play?

I kind of do whatever I feel seems necessary (even if I'm wrong haha).

One habit I get into which is a big no-no is being a Rambo. I start spawning at the outer rim and move as far as I can into the action and get walloped because I'm defenseless and unarmed. Or sometimes I see 5 tanks and think "I'm gonna squash 'em". I do get one upon spawn, but there are 4 more ready to tear me up. My kdr pays the price.

single player is awesome

Just finished it last night, and yes- the campaign was a lot of fun.

The hawks were designed in this game to last longer in the air than in Warhawk, which I appreciate. Dogfighting is now more of a challenge for the offensive pilot (thankfully).

Beam turrets are auto-aimed, but you can hop in and manually control too (which is awesome). Laying down a bunch in front of your base is a great way to fend off tanks and hawks.

The game was beta tested for a little under two months and is frankly amazingly well-balanced in my eyes considering you can build entire bases and fight in just about any situation imaginable. Heck, you can even snipe pilots out of mechs and hijack their hawk. If I were you I would just play campaign and co-op for now until the hotfixes hit next week and maybe then you'll be less disappointed. If you want to co-op sometime let me know and we can recollect about the glory days of Warhawk.

If you want to improve your dogfighting skills you could always jump into a dogfight-only match or even do a co-op room and take to the sky once the hawks show up. The campaign also has some great hawk versus hawk action too.

When it comes to friendly players building extra structures, I'd never be afraid of reclaiming them in order to keep things efficient and spread out. When you destroy a team-made structure (due to it's redundancy or lack of necessity) the recycled rift energy goes back to the original creator, so it's not a complete slap to the face of the person who built it.

I gave up this morning...Gamestop gave me $20.24 :/ Sucks but its $20 more that I can put down on Diablo so my wife doesnt murder me for buying 2 games back to back.

If I could only get my buddies who I play BF with or the original WH with to come play...but they all were turned off by the beta and even me throwing it in last night when a few were over didnt convince any of them :(

A big tipping point, which was actually kind of funny, was last night in a server with a clan.
They had maybe 15 members on the server and would "base-r*pe" us till everyone quit.
Then a new round would start and they would try to balance the teams by having some of the clan members jump to our team...but, before they could switch teams or balance things out the round would have already started and they would be driving tanks into our base or bombing us.
So my team every 2 or 3 matches would be clan members bitching about thier own guys not giving them a chance to get ready lol. Then the arguements would spill into the lobby like "Damn it Mike, let us get balanced and ready before you guys start raping us!"

I will say, one tactic I havent seen or used since the old "carpet bomb the carrier" in BF2 was in effect during a few games I played last night...the old "Screw it, I'm not spawning" tactic!
I will admit tho, I had some great conversations with my team who like me gave up spawning till the next round started.

The tanks destroy in this game. It's not fun being on the receiving end of 15 tanks swarming around your one base.

I kind of wish the Ammo Base bulding thing had more stuff in it, preferably proximity mines. I have a hard time finding the few spots the mines spawn on the different maps, and they're so effective if you use them properly. Could be lethal if your base was getting tank raped if you lay a few around.
