I don't know the story behind this, but it must be something technical like it not playing nice with the overlay...or something (I'm grasping at straws), because UoC is quality, yeah?
I'll assume it's more as others have said, that big publishers get more of an in than "lesser" beings. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the deals Valve has says they basically put up anything certain publishers want to. It sucks, but that's business sometimes. Valve has to take whatever junk to get the Borderlands and GTA and Call of Duty. (Especially the latter, which has gone Steamworks.)

I DIDN'T ASK FOR THIS!

I have a "rejects" group specifically for all the 'Mac' versions of games... :-/

Just wanted to ask in here, I'm hoping to do a OT for Vessel, did anyone request this in the thread at all? Didn't want to tred on any toes for what will be hopefully my first thread on GAF.
Cannot wait to get my hands on it, only couple of days now.

It's actually easy to explain this: each game submitted to Steam is reviewed by one person on their (review) team. While one guy may think a game is terrible, another one may think it's good enough. Valve employees don't really have bosses, so it's a mess like that.

So yes, it's extremely flawed, much like Steam Support.

Where did you read that?

I would also like to know.

The only restrictions I have know are games with low resolutions or games that are would cause a lot of controversy due to the content.

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.
I've also heard of Steam rejecting games because the price the developer is asking for is too high.

So we get games like WWE WrestleFest and Dino D-Day but yet they rejected Unity of Command, Din's Curse, and Noitu Love 2?? But at one point Evochron Mercenary, Space Pirates and Zombies, and Gemini Rue were also rejected for some time before they were eventually added... The Steam submission process seems really flawed or broken.
Every once in a while somebody comes into a Steam thread and says this, but there are tons of indie games on Steam, of varying quality levels, so when people go "VALVE ARE BEING ASSHOLES ABOUT INDIE GAMES FOR ABSOLUTELY NO POSSIBLE REASON", I have a tendency to think information is being left out somewhere.

I may be wrong about only one person reviewing a product but that's pretty much Valve's way of doing things when it comes to not making video games. The "Valve employees don't really have bosses" is based on inumerous Gaben interviews (he's said multiple times he is the only boss there and employees have certain freedom to work). Lack of management would help explain Valve's horrendous Support.

We've seen games being rejected simply because "Steam is not a good fit for distribution" (at least explain why you are rejecting it, Valve!), accepted after many attempts (eg SPAZ) and stuff like that, which is why I said the review process is terrible.

... So you made it up.

Still haven't finished Brotherhood...

I should probably wait until the summer sale at least for Revelations.

You posted that 8 minutes ago, yet I'm still not seeing it. Why does it always take forever for the deals to show up on my page? I hit refresh on the page, close out firefox and try to reload, but i still don't see it.

I'm seeing it here in Canada but not on the front page it's already discounted if you look by search.

We can definitely all agree that there are some weird, arcane elements to the Steam approval process. I remember a time when point-and-click adventure games had a seriously hard time getting on the store, apparently because someone at Valve wasn't interested in them at the time. That suddenly changed, though.

I usually check my wishlist to see if any of the games are discounted. They typically apply the discount long before it shows up on the front page.

Hmm... wonder if Stronghold Kingdoms is any good.

Dead Mountaineer's looks kinda interesting. Kinda reminds me or Cursed Mountain which never made it to Steam for some reason.

Here's a review: http://adventuregamers.com/article/id,1396

They didn't seem to like it. For what it's worth, I rarely agree with them on their reviews.
Metacritic only had two critic reviews and one user review, and all of them (including the one you mentioned) were really bad, like, this is how you should NOT make an adventure game. Now I'm having second thoughts, lol.

*edit* Found one more C+ review, saying it's a clunker: http://www.gameboomers.com/reviews/Dd/DeadMountaineershotel/DeadMountaineersHotel.htm

I've had it on my wishlist for awhile but if I wouldn't play it any time soon if I bought it so I'm holding off. But it is at that price where if it's crap it's still easy to swallow.

That's actually a pretty good strategy.

It's not like I've gotta have the deal the second it goes up. Unless there is an obvious price mistake, I can usually wait a while if I'm interested. But I always wonder how people know what the deal is long before it has been posted on the front page. I guess I know now.

Yeah, absolutely. I think Valve does a good job overall but as we've all mentioned there are a some things that could be fixed (and I was wrong to say it's an "extremely flawed process").

They still have a hard time getting on their it seems. I think it was the developer of the Blackwell series who said that before they put one on their they wait and see if it's successful on it's own and gets good press. Which doesn't make sense because there is some mediocre ones on there.

Super Street Fighter AE 2012 Turbo Ultra Edition 2 is coming out on Thursday for Steam users. The update is live for everyone else...

Huh, does anyone have any opinions on it? It LOOKS like a decent-looking adventure game, and it claims to have a long gameplay time. If I don't hear anything bad, I'm gonna grab it.

It's hilariously bad. The puzzles are janky, the English dub almost seems intentionally bad as a joke, and occasionally some generic buttrock starts playing in the background for no reason. Just watch this video (and ignore the commentary):

See, how can something like Dead Mountaineer make it on Steam which is apparently crap, but a game that's highly regarded like The Book of Unwritten Laws or A New Beginning not make it? There's definitely something up with the approval process of these type of games.

You know, I almost lit the Joe Molotov signal since you're my go-to person for testing potentially horrible games. I didn't realize you'd actually already played it, lol.

I'm thinking I'll pass, though hilariously bad could have its own appeal. $2.50 is nothing, but 15 hours of bad game is something I probably won't get around to.

What's the opposite of buyer's remorse? 'Cause I just looked at my wishlist and there are some games I seriously regret not buying during a sale :/

I have an odd question, but I can't seem to find anything in the steam support about it. If I have a little bit in my steam wallet can I use that as well as another form of payment to purchase something?
