When she picks up a controller, I have to look
The other way because I feel so embarrassed for her. I'm thinking of starting out with a point and click story game maybe. We can enjoy a story together while she gets down button placement.

Maybe Costume Quest is a recommendation here? Funny story and easily watchable, and the action is certainly slow enough paced that she can get a handle on the buttons (combat having a focus on timed button presses though... )

I had a similar issue when I tried to get my girlfriend to play Portal.

She got really frustrated because of the M/KB controls. It was really hard for her to conceptualize moving and looking at the same time. Doing two things at once is very difficult, especially for people who aren't used to it.

Then she got frustrated because the puzzles were too difficult.

I really wished I had filmed the whole thing. She was cursing like a sailor and it was hilarious.

fucking hotline miami 2

get hyped
Oh I am, I am. That's one game I'll probably buy day one.

And actually play!

I'm weak guys, and I hope Gabe can forgive me... Just bought Apollo Justice for DS, which I'll pick up tomorrow. Let's hope he doesn't cancel the Summer Sale in retaliation :/

My wife has been nagging me to let her play games with me. She's never really played games all that much, so I need a suggestion for a simple game with local coop/versus so she can start off with something easy.

Lara Croft Guardian of Light.

SapientWolf

Trucker Sexologist
The non-digital deluxe edish of Showdown is $5.

It's pretty fun if you find a good match. Way better than what I was expecting. It's like a 2D version of The Specialists mod.

Who is the protagonist of 4 then? The annoying girly-looking guy from 2 who made me hate that game after the first chapter?
Solid Snake was 4's protagonist, Raiden wouldn't make his return as a playable character until Revengeance. If you get it when it hits Steam you might change your tune on him, I'd link you to the first fight in the game against a Metal Gear Ray just to see how radically different it is but Youtube seems content to freezing my browser at the moment.

bish gets all the credit :)
So apparently there's some glitch on amazon that gives you a credit for the Maw if you buy any one of their indie games. Use that credit on the Maw and then it gives you another code for the Maw. Repeat ad infinium.

The Lego-Games are always fun I think. And it seems Lego Lord of the Rings is just 6$ at GMG right now.

This must be why it's suddenly cropped up on steamgifts a thousand times.

If LBP2 was "fixed" I must be remembering LBP way better than it was.
So, what was so utterly horrible about LBP/2? I found it pretty friendly for people who don't play a lot of video games: it is easy, has no player collision (so no bumping each other to your deaths a la NSMB), has a variety of level types (platforming, shooting, puzzles) in co-op and versus, and it lets you backhand the other player. It barely gave me any boils and scabs at all.

Lara Croft Guardian of Light.
Winner, right here.

Normal on PC? Not bad.

Terrible, floaty platforming which basically kills a platformer. But I guess one doesn't really play LBP for its platforming.

Yeah, somebody be an ass and hook gaf up. :)
I would, but I looked through like all eight pages of indie games they have on sale, but all of it are stuff that:

1) are currently in a humble bundle
2) are shitty priced
3) I have already
4) I have no interest in and won't buy just to get a free game

Oh rock of ages, do not crumble, love is breathing still. Oh lady moon shine down, a little people magic if you will.

Maybe this will help;
My mom's a gaming fanatic nowday's, and she started out with games like Civ Revolution, Pokemon and The Settlers. LEGO games are also good to get "into games". It's so normal for most gamers, but to get into playing games is damn hard. It sounds cheesy, but all those buttons are intimidating. :p

But now she's playing games like Dragon Age, Deus Ex, Arkham Asylum. And she's a huge fan of InFamous, Ni No Kuni and the Final Fantasy's. Certainly took some time, and the first time she played a more complex game (Ratchet & Clank: ToD) wasn't a pretty sight. But hey.

Something i've noticed with more people (suprising amount of girls) who want to "get into gaming" is that they need a goal, a clear vision of what they're supposed to do. Mission-based's a real hit.

Another tip are the Dreamworks moviegames. Suprisingly fun, too.

Dungeon defenders? You can set the difficulty lower. Let most of the towers do the work. Have her stay near a crystal and defend it.

Trine 2 might be nice too since dying is not a big problem (easy respawn) and you can change some settings to make it easier, like less restrictions, can power through puzzles.

Yeah, every gamer should watch someone with no gaming experience *try* to play an fps.

It is an eye opening experience.

Honestly it's pretty eye opening seeing any genre played by someone without the proper context to it or gaming as a whole. You take so many things for granted as a given with these things that it's always interesting to see someone going in fresh.

Teaching absolute basics of 2D fighting games to a friend was amazing to watch, just trying to get him to spazz out an SRK motion was something to behold.

When I gave my cousin Elite Beat Agents to try, I mean, the game is no more complicated than tap the circles when the contracting outline overlaps, but even that was pretty bewildering.

SRKs just make no sense to me. I even played SF2 pretty often as a kid and I could never do them on the Genesis gamepad. I can't do them now consistently on a stick (maybe 20% success rate).

(Performing them on a keyboard is a piece of cake on the other hand)

I swear, holding diagonal-down on a stick or dpad without it registering as only right or only down just doesn't work for me for some reason. The only way to make SRKs manageable for me is either keyboard or a hitbox.

None of LBP's controls are particularly tight, but none of LBP's levels require particularly tight controls, so I don't see what the problem is. It's a stress-free introduction to platforming, shooting, and bullet hell, all with optional co-op, and isn't that the point?

Hell, if you sat me in front of Dota 2 you could tape a very funny video for your later amusement.

I kind of disagree with this. LBP 1 is easy for the first few levels but the difficulty goes up dramatically near the end. That is where I really started to hate that game. It requires some feats of skill that the game is just not designed to let players do with any degree of confidence.

LBP2 is much, much, much better than LBP on all fronts. Platforming is tighter, but still not tight. If you are looking for tight platforming controls on either, you are going to be disappointed.

That being said my six year old daughter plays LBP like it is her job, so I do think it can be a great place to start gaming.

I don't particularly care what the "point" of a game is and whether the controls are "good enough" for what it does. The physics are terrible and I don't play games for some stress-free relaxation. There isn't much else to it.

Honestly, LBP2 is one of the most inventive games of this generation. That is why I enjoyed it.

LBP1 can die in a fire.

I'd love a Maw code, too. It's been on my wishlist a couple of years now, but I've been always waiting for a bigger discount / inclusion in a bundle :lol

Different strokes for different folks.

I got LBP2 with my PS3 and was considering getting LBP1 as well. Thanks for saving me the headache.

Universal Access can be found under System Preferences
Adventures in Uplay:

  • Tried to activate and play Might and Magic Heroes VI; the game launches through Uplay
  • Shades of Darkness and the two addons unlock fine
  • Original/base game would not unlock because, "This CD Key or Activation Code is already in use with another account." -- it has never been used
  • Contacted support by phone and get many vacuous questions before finally:
  • "Verify integrity" - doesn't work
  • "Reinstall" - doesn't work
  • "Let's elevate it to my supervisor"
  • Cool supervisor sends me another key and advises me to reinstall
  • Do as he says, Input key, "You already own this game." -- LOL
  • Log into Might and Magic VI to try inputting it in the game
  • Cannot connect to Conflux because, "...unique key has been reserved."
  • Try to unlock the base game anyway. "You need an internet connection."
