STEAM announcements & updates 2013 II - ITT we buy $1 games and complain about them

The UK price of £6.30 is good, and we're technically Europe, even if we like to pretend we're not.
Speak for yourself. I'm not sure where Robert got the idea that it would be Braid like. I mean I got the feeling it was a Wind Waker Cave Story type game from the islands and Fish's interviews. And from the first half I wasn't disappointed.

Anyone know if the XCom Slingshot DLC is on sale somewhere? I am about to start playing it on Ironman Impossible and to be honest, I think I kind of need the new hats or I don't stand a chance. It's a mental thing for my recruits.

I do background checks on every dev before I buy a game.

I'm hoping to finish up the one I'm doing for Assassin's Creed 3 before the summer sale.

Mutant Blobs Attack is pretty good.

...and I don't care if we're supposed to talk about the game and not the creator(s) - DrinkBox is staffed by really great people.

edit:
Has anyone here bit on Sword of the Stars: The Pit? I'm really looking for impressions.

Pretty much. If I took that stance I wouldn't be buying any games from Activision, Ubisoft, EA, Blizzard, etc. Shocking that devs and publishers are sometimes douchebags.

A new version of Final Fantasy XI was released on Steam last week. Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 is still in closed beta.

Ah, right. It was FFXI, my bad.

So far all the FFs on the Steam registry previously existed on PC? The milestone would've been spotting FFX/X-II/XIII and such. I think IX never had a port but also showed up in the registry, right? Maybe I'm just really confused, I need more sleep...

Have you recently received emails from Steam and Origin about someone trying to reset your password?

I have received:
  • two from Steam between 8 and 9 PM on April 19th
  • one from Origin between 8 and 9 PM today

FFIX was never in the registry.

If you've recently redeemed a Steam code that was public (like, given away on GAF), then no worries about Steam.

Origin is a different issue though, so you'd better change it for a month, just in case.

It is a different message than the usual ones with redeemed codes. It is as if someone had used my email address to ask for a reset, and then I receive an email with a link to reset the password, but I do not click the link.

They could be elegant spams (they exist). Better change passwords for some time, just in case, using the client's procedure, as someone probably knows which emails you're using.

Interestingly, I had parsed the emails too fast, the email address used is the one I use for the Steam Support and Origin Store/Client, not for Steam Store/Client.

While Origin does not tell the IP address of the scammer, Steam Support does and this is the following one: 91.50.128.112 (only for April 19th)

If you receive similar messages in the following days, please tell as well.

GMG has got 75% off Ronimo Games content. To that end, if I pick up the Romino games bundle (which includes a copy of Awesomenauts) and already own Awesomenauts will it free up that portion of the bundle as a giftable item or does it not work that way?

Also, Luxor Evolved.... is it complete garbage? Seems like a cheap cash-grab on the whole Geo Wars/Pac Man CE craze but whenever I see flashing lights and multipliers all over the screen I lose all will power. Bulletstorm and Beat Hazard are better than sex for this reason.

It depends if GMG give separate keys for that bundle or not. If they don't then the copy will be lost. If they do you won't be able to add the item to your Steam inventory but you'll be free to give the key to a friend or whatever.

If GMG provides individual keys then yes, you can pass on the individual keys. If it's one key for the bundle then you won't get giftable copies.

Edit: beaten.

People were afraid of a Steam universal takeover, but between GG, GoG, GreenManGaming and Nuuvem, Steam is quickly losing monopoly over my monies.

Yeah, but how many of the games you buy from those services register on Steam? I imagine a large majority, at least that's what it is in my case.

Thanks, figured it out by checking whether the "Ronimo Games" bundle was available on Steam or not; it isn't so the "bundle" was just a collection of codes put together by GMG.

As a result, with the 20% off voucher, you can get Awesomenauts, all it's DLC, it's fantastic soundtrack and Swords and Soldiers for $10. If you're at all into the MOBA scene it's worth checking out. I found LoL and DOTA too hard to process just looking at the battlefield; I find Awesomenauts much easier to "read" moment to moment. Plus the 80's Saturday morning cartoon schtick resonates with me.

So no opinions on Luxor Evolved?

In that regard, yeah, Steam still is my one and only overlord.

It's why I wish there was no uPlay and/or Origin. It would have been nice to have a unified PC front with Steam due to the amount of features that they offer. Unlike consoles, having a unified PC front would be quite beneficial to the format. I just hope that Big Picture Mode gets some improvements, mine tends to crash to the desktop from time to time.

Without competition the sale prices on Steam would likely go up and quality of service would go down. Monopolies are never good for an industry.

How is competition occurring thanks to those?

Developers and publishers set their own prices. Steam isn't a store, buying quantities of inventory from developers and publishers, using loss-leaders to sneak people in, etc. They're a consignment boutique--a space where independent sellers are competing amongst each other in exchange for a cut going to the middle-man.

Hell, Steam allows for free Steamworks keys. Developers can literally give away tens of thousands of copies of their game for free if they want. Or resell those keys, basically limiting Valve's cut further. So you get competition from places like GMG, who basically do nothing but make money by claiming some of that middle-man cash. Since they can meaningfully reduce their margin in exchange for volume, they can attract customers. And they do it within the framework of Steam, because Steam isn't a conventional store, it's a consignment boutique. GMG is basically acting like an agent on behalf of one of the sellers inside the consignment boutique.

Do uPlay or Origin take less than 30% of a cut from developers?
