Steam Deck |OT| Nintendo Switch 2

I remember reading a bunch of people warrantying their Decks for audio crackling, though it seemingly is a pretty simple fix (loosening a screw), but google reddit along with the issue and you'll find it. This is what I found:

Unless you're describing the issue w/ audio crackling upon waking/resuming games from sleep, that is software related and can be circumvented with various Decky plugins.

Thanks for comment. Indeed I looked into reddit as well. My problem is directly with the Steam Deck speakers. 3.5 mm jack is secondary concern right now. I did something yesterday but I wanna see if it's going to work or not. I need to test it further.

But as @azertydu91 said, I think it got to the with the software issue. Like I said, I will test my new solution (at least it seems a solution right now) and if it works, I'll share it here.

I don't remember if I ever posted there, but let me ask something:

How good is chiaki with OLED model because other people had nightmarish experiences with OLED's wifi? And is it a great alternative for Playstation Portal? I ask this because I realized that the Deck might be even better for me for several reasons and should I get it for them:

1. I freaking love JRPGs, indies and visual novels, but I struggle playing them on console. Remote play may allow me to save some money and I could also play some of those games natively as I have a good number of them in my Steam library.
2. I want an emergency PC that I can carry everywhere. I loved Linux Mint, so the OS does not scare me.
3. I also recently fell in love with ARPGs like Diablo and have a good amount of them in my Steam library and I heard Grim Dawn runs good on the Deck.

Also, how good is Heroic Launcher. Will I have problems with controls if I decide to launch for example, Torchlight 2 from Epic Games store with it?

Chiaki / PS Play have both gotten great and bad impressions, it's very much a ymmv thing. If it works it will be great, many prefer the HDR/OLED combo over the higher res PSP.

All your other points are solidly handled by the device, and despite it not being Windows you'll find the community patches/proton versions/support of the Deck to be second to none.

RIP 1TB SD Card (SanDisk Ultra A1, 1TB 120mb/s), making my 64GB SD almost useless.

It started when I wanted to copy files from internal storage to the SD drive and it was so slow it took forever. Then, a few days later, I couldn't update any game and got disk drive error messages. Then I noticed that no game appeared to be installed. I tried to format the SD card which also got me an error message. I tried to format the card on my desktop PC, still no dice. Same when I tried to format it on my Switch.

SD card was two and half years old and I claimed a RMA case. According to the support page I'll get a replacement within 7 business days.

The SD has been a great companion for the last couple of weeks and now it can rest for a while. Maybe I get around to finish Silent Hill 2 on my desktop PC or Zelda on my Switch, meanwhile.

Im surprised youre still managing with a 64GB Internal NVMe, mine kept running out of space and i had 256GB, i got fed up with it and replaced it with a 2TB NVMe, best upgrade yet for my Deck.

I used to outsource compatibility and shader data to the SD card and link it back to the original internal place so the internal store wouldn't fil up as much. It hasn't been an issue for me and I wanted the cheapest way possible to enjoy handheld PC gaming.

Now, if I hadn't got an SD already I would pay more and go for the 512GB OLED one (since I don't play huge AAA titles on it, 1TB isn't necessary for me).

I ended up ordering a Steam Deck on Saturday. I took some stuff I didn't want to GameStop and a local game/book store and got like $250 and just used it to get Steam Credit.

They had the 1TB models available as refurbished for $519 so after my credit it was like $300ish after taxes.

Steam deck is amazing. You probably know this but don't play the newest triple A games on it, it will look and run poorly

Been playing Sekiro since I picked it up during the last steam sale. Looks great. Playing locked at 45fps and it's been smooth and responsive.

Anybody have opinions on the best controllers for docked Steam Deck? I like having a dedicated controller per system (outside of Xbox/PC since the Xbox controller can switch back and forth via the button).

Yeah, funnily enough I've owned a Steam Deck twice in the past. I got one day 1 but didn't care for it much, then when the OLED came out I ordered one and loved it but at the time I was saving money for Japan so I returned it.

I know the Deck won't really run AAA very well (I did play the epilogue of RDR2 on it and it was great). I'll be using it for emulation a lot as I'm finally coming around to emulation after years and years of refusing to do it.

I'm into minimalism and video games was the only thing I sort of didn't practice it as much (I am nearly 100% digital on eligible platforms, but I still have a GBA, NDS, N3DS, PSP, Vita, PS1/2/3x2/4/5, 360 S, Series X, GameCube, Wii, WiiU, Switch OLED, Neogeo pocket, and a PC Engine) and the Deck will be used for emulation for a vast majority of those platforms and I'll probably sell everything but the current consoles and the PlayStation consoles as everything but the Phat PS3 is my original console from my childhood.

I also grabbed a JSAUX dock, and screen protector so I can go back and forth between handheld and docked for the emulation.

It runs AAA just not the most modern ones, especially ones in UE5. But there are plenty games you can if not 60fps, run at 40-45. I just got HL ALyx (no vr mod) running at 45fps. Looks absolutely stunning on the deck. Forza Horizon 5 runs at stable 40fps at medium settings and on a screen that size, you dont really notice the loss from high settings. Its actually amazing how FH 4 or 5 look amazing yet NFS Unbound looks like dogshit and struggles to keep 30fps.

Also you got guys like these that keep checking on newest titles running on the deck on all settings and in the end giving you the best setting scenario:

I got a typical problem - my non-steam folders is up to 50GB (shaders are at 3GB), so clearly something got left over all the stupid EA Launcher or other things. How do I get rid of it ?

These comparison shots had me thinking of this thread (and it's title!) specifically

Nice! My take on Switch 2 vs Deck
+ Smaller size, but significantly bigger screen
+ VRR (not so much docked, otherwise more ++s)
- A lot (most) of games will not see that 60-120fps range of the VRR in handheld
--- Not OLED, those blacks. Wait, what blacks, those are grays!
+ lighter weight
- worse comfort (wild guess, but expecting this.
+/- mouse controls in leu of trackpad (if they work well this could be + only)
- a little worse battery life (2-6 hours instead of like 2.5 - 12 hours)
++ newer features, DLSS <3
+++ way better docked performance
++ Nintendo 1st party games
- price to keep up with those first party games
- trying to pre-order one sucked

Comfort/controls was one area the Deck annihilated the Switch OLED. I ended up buying a controller cradle for Switch. Hopefully the Switch 2 is better, but looking at it just seems like slightly bigger joycons. Not sure if that's enough. Probably going to have to buy extended controllers or another cradle.

My biggest question is how the fans smell on the Switch compared to the Steam Deck.

Real talk the Switch 2 has a advantage in the compactness department. I wonder how it compares technically

At this point I would buy a Steam Deck 2 day one. It's time for a refresh.

There is no SoC to use for Deck 2 just yet. Newest AMD's "AI" models will bump performance by maybe 30-40% for double the cost (at least double).

We'll need to wait till 2026-2027 for next UDNA (RDNA 5 really) low power version release.

Thanks. I guess I'll have to wait.

Valve themselves said they wont have it out for awhile. I highly doubt SD will reach a lifespan of the Switch but they made it clear they wont have frequent upgrades and are treating it as a regular console. I hate that other manufacturers are treating their products like an annual thing same as phones. I have a Mackbook M1 that is light years ahead of their older macs, yet now after 3 years I think theres M4 chip already. Absolutely pointless incremental updates. If you think you will be lacking because you got an OLED SD, think again. Switch 2 for example had modern day examples such as Cyberpunk would run on it but all these and more run perfectly on SD already. We dont know how and if itll be able to run day one modern games. Also SD you got insane ease of emulation, even Switch 1 games run at 60fps on top of the whole steam library.

Even when SD2 comes out, its probably not going to run Spiderman 3 full force as it was never designed for that. You can wait but you wont have any less fun with the current one. Also, never cheap out on the purchase and listen to ppl telling you to buy LCD model with 256gb then replace the ssd yourself. First, the OLED's battery is miles ahead of LCD, second, I do love tinkering with products but if you are not more than comfortable doing that, theres plenty ppl on YT that ruined their deck with the ssd swap because its not just a simple swap and play as they make you want to believe.

This is FH 5 runnign on the steam deck, game 10 times the size and details of Mario Kart World. Its not that the steam deck is weak, its that developers have shit optimisation.

Deck bros, any recommendations on a dock? I see the official one being 80€ but some cheaper ones seem to go as low as 25€, which makenme wonder why the official one is so expensivem

Official dock does get firmware updates via SteamOS itself, but other than that they are functionally identical to the others. For example, in the latest beta they added support for more TV models and VRR modes in some Dell monitors

Personally, I use this one:

It was $19 and it works for my monitor as well as plugging the Steam Deck (and Switch, interchangeably) into my Meta Quest 3.

I have been using a simple base thats not expensive, and even some USB-C hubs when I just connect it to a TV with not too much space, for the deck it is not that important. You want to set the resolution of the game as "Native" in properties, otherwise your game resolution will probably limited to the one of the steam deck screen.

One of my favorite features of the Switch is its wake-from-bluetooth where the system wakes up after turning on the controller.

FYI: It also works on the steamdeck! :messenger_heart:

I should be getting mine sometime tomorrow. 😅. I recently had surgery and needed something to smile about. I'm gonna be nervous until it arrives. Heard some bad delivery stories on this thing.

Don't worry too hard, I've heard more good than bad. But I wish you the best delivery! It's a cool lil device.

I use my deck more than pc and console these days. It'll definitely add to your total gaming time. Website Gg.deals is your friend

I haven't been this hyped for a device in a long time. For a while I told myself to hold on from buying it and wait for the next deck to come out but that doesn't appear to be coming anytime soon.

I got the 1tb OLED steam deck. I don't plan to do an upgrade til the next steam deck OLED. The rog ally x might be good after blasting away windows with steam os. That remains to be seen.
I don't have faith in windows on handhelds. I don't think MS will make it streamlined enough or gamer centric enough.

I finally created an insane emudeck set up. I'm mostly happy with it. Everything up till Dreamcast runs absolutely flawlessly, however that cannot be said for GC, PS2, and Xbox at all, and I cannot stress that enough. You'll come across titles that run miraculously well, (Fatal Frame 1, SF Ex 3, Jet Set Radio Future, Legaia Dual Saga), and then you'll come across titles that simply run like unmitigated disasters, (Super Dragon Ball Z: that one really bums me out as I love the game), and you'll come across titles that run somewhat decent but just not to the standard where they're really quite fun(Spawn: Armageddon, Crazy Taxi 3), but most of the titles past the Dreamcast merely run..... acceptably. That being said, I can't count myself disappointed, as it's still a hell of a nice library on the Deck here. Oh, and Seaman runs perfectly and you can configure the emulator to recognize the Steam Deck's internal mic, which is just rad.

Overall, the emudeck experience gets a firm 10/10 from me, absolutely outstanding. The Deck OLED, as a kit of hardware, after using it for a few years now, also gets a firm 10/10. It's not perfect in terms of capability, but it is as perfect as it can be for the time it came out and it's intended use case scenarios. I'd give it a 6/10 for emulation of anything past Dreamcast though, just so everyone is aware, but in general, I love this thing and it has allowed me to dip back into beloved titles from my past that I can't easily play these days, and it's also just a hell of a portable PC. If anyone is thinking about getting a Steam Deck, even if you have a Switch 2, I say go for it; they're outstanding machines. Go for the OLED though, the 90hz and HDR matter far, far more than many might realize.

Just in case anybody is interested. Steam currently has refurbished units for everything but the 64GB (512/1TB OLED, and 256/512 LCD) in stock. The 512GB at $110 less then normal is pretty good.

In Germany neither.

After buying and installing an SSD to upgrade my 64gb version I somehow must have damaged the display slightly so it now flickers/has strobing at certain low brightness levels :/

This device is incredible. Just got mine today and been using it all day setting things up. Also got gfn set up and it's flawless. Games look and run flawless. Only complaint I'd have for the device is it takes long to charge it.

I feel like this thing is kind of a rebirth for my love for gaming. Old games feel like a new experience almost. I don't think I'd be able to go back to a console. There's something special about being able to play great looking games right in the palm of your hands.

It took a while to get use to the controls but it feels like butter now. Love how this thing feels. Very comfortable controller.

Ya, it's one hell of a machine.

Is there a similar return policy on consoles comparable to steam's? I feel like nobody talks about this feature on steam, but you can literally load up every game in the steam library in order to find the games you're looking for... Absolutely insane to me

You mean that you can refund games? Yeah, I regularly use it, especially if Steam Deck compatibility is questionable, or performance in general sucks or the game is just bad. When developers can't be bothered with releasing demos, I have no issues with refunding games when they don't get me hooked within 2 hours.

But no, you don't have this services on consoles. Only in extreme cases like Cyberpunk 2077's PS4 version at launch.
