Steam introduces the ability for users to tag games.

Traditional explanatory page here, but I guess this is Valve's solution to the discover-ability problem. Slightly depressing that they nicked the idea from Kongregate, but still.

You can tag games or software in the Steam Store with terms that you think are appropriate, or apply tags that others have already suggested for that title.

Apply genres such as “Puzzle”, themes like “Military”, or attributes such as “Difficult”. Or, come up with entirely new concepts to apply in categorizing products.
Browse a new section of the Steam Store to discover games and software, organized by the most frequently used tags.

Plus, narrow your search to just products tagged with the terms you and your friends have applied.
Browse by tags recommended based on the games you have played and software you have used recently.
As you browse for products by tag, you’ll find new filtering controls to help narrow your search. Now you can easily find those single-player, platformer games, that run on Linux and have Steam Achievements, Steam Trading Cards, and Full Controller Support.
Q. What if I don't agree with a tag that has become popular for my game?
A. Tags can be a good indicator of when there is a mismatch between how you perceive your game, and how your game is perceived by customers. Often this is simply because there is some piece of information regarding the game that customers feel is missing from the store page.

Was waiting for the part where you can arrange your library via tags. Have multiple tags per game and then just click a tag to show all your games that have that tag.

Finally.

The fact that games like Grand Theft Auto IV, and Far Cry 3 are listed as Adventure games is super annoying. Hopefully this is a step in the right direction for sorting that stuff out.

I can't wait to see what tags Infestation: Survivor Stories (aka War Z) gets. That's got to be the most hated game on Steam, right?

This should be amusing, and I'm glad they don't intend to allow a dev to subvert customers view points.

Only a matter of time till there is a tag that covers games that are really bad or insidious.

This is neat, but for the love of god make it freaking easier for me to organize my games!

100% certain this will be applied to the library once it is out of beta and more usable.

I'd also imagine it could be applicable to all sorts of other things such as mods, dlc, maybe even music and movies if they jump that far

I'm sure that one is going to get some bitching from uptight parts of the community who hate the name Moba. Alternatively, we may see some rebelling and people putting the Moba tag on every Online Multiplayer game.

System is right now suggesting I want more accounting software, despite you need a budget being the only thing on steam with that tag, so its an empty suggestion category.

Man finally. This is a great step forward for the Steam store that really went too long without it.

I can tell the Rogue-like tag is going to annoy me with the list of games that it will get attached to that aren't actually roguelikes.

This is exactly what you can expect for the first month, as it is for any tag system as you tune out the "fat"

Q. Why Beta?
A. We need to get some data into the system before it will be fully optimal. That means the initial categorization of items might be a bit off until we see what kind of tags are becoming prevalent and tune the system for the best results.

well the tag of "Nanomachines, son" has already been recommended to me via recently playing MGR so i'd say this is going swimmingly

I was just about to say the same.

See this, Konami? Make MGR2 and put MGS5 on Steam so this category can fill up!

EDIT:

Ugh, this shit is why PC gaming is scary to some people (amongst other reasons). To organize my games better, I need to research and download third party applications? Come on, Steam should have a much better way to organize/categorize my games at this point, it's like a decade old and it's laughably bad right now.

Huh? Do the consoles offer better ways of organizing your digital library? Or even other PC downloadable clients? Not that Steam's categorizing is great by any means, but this is a weird thing to harp on PC gaming for.

PC gaming is scary because there's often an unofficial fix for things that developers haven't gotten around to yet?

Okay.

Wait, are you implying consoles are better at organising stuff? You're lucky to get *any* sort of categorising, filtering, searching, etc on consoles (PS4, Xbox One) and if you do, it's pretty bad (PS3, 360).

Even the built in Steam stuff is better than any of the console stuff - but you also have the option of other people making things to make it better. I'm so confused why something that is completely optional would make it 'scary' - you don't need this for anything.

I'd take the opposite stand point. You could simply ignore the unofficial more technical solutions and treat it like any other platform where a feature doesn't exist yet. Wait till an official solution is implemented, which I can assure you will be once this beta period is over and the tag system develops. Last.fm's tag system was similarly messy during its formative stages if I recall correctly

This took forever to come out. I still prefer to rely on reviews and such, but this looks like it could be useful.

Some of the tags are hilarious.

Popular tags for DmC:
poop
Bad Sequel
Edgy
Not Half-Life 3

I hope there won't be spoilers in tags, though, or at least they won't be popular enough to show up on the game page.

Good. Steam desperately needs many more usability improvements. Now make it easier to buy/manage DLC please.

I wonder if Riot Games is going to start recruiting people to tag Dota2 as a MOBA, which would likely piss off a lot of people.

hint: Riot Games invented "MOBA" so people would stop calling LoL a Dota-Clone.

No possible way that this feature will be abused...

None at all...

Neat new feature, once its matured a little.

For me I don't even need tags for my library, just the ability to drag and drop into categories I create. If by "categories" they do tagging, then fine. But typing in tags for each game based on what tags I want to use is no better than the plodding manual process they currently have.

The flight plan I just filed with the agency list me, my men, Dr. Pavel here. But only one of you!
#YOLO as a tag for Dota2 is the most appropriate thing I have ever seen.

What will be the first game to have someone put a major spoiler as a tag?

Dark Souls has the tag "Git Gud or Die Tryin"

brb tagging every game The Dark Souls of ______
