STEAM | January 2015 - Steam GOTY results: Delayed

The other games on Steam, including the witcher series, don't visually depict penetration. Which going from the Everlasting Summer email is the issue Steam has with VNs.

So you can have oral sex or or other stuff and it's ok but not penetration? That's just stupid
Is Steam ruled by Clinton or something?

"This" as in the tab? It's a good few years old now and exists because there can also be a "Leaderboards" option:

No, the blue. It looks like the new color scheme is making it's way into more places. I check my achievements pretty regularly, but I don't remember it being blue last time I did so.

I'm pretty sure oral wouldn't fly either if they actually showed it. It's not the type of sex they have, so much as it is how graphic the depiction is. Implied oral (face in crotch with a bobbing motion) would probably be fine though.

The stuff in Witcher is softcore. It's implied that they're banging, but it never shows anything go into anything else (for that matter, I don't think they show any genitalia at all, just boobs and butts). Hardcore sex is when it gets into porn territory, and that's where Valve would draw the line.

A Fish Aficionado

I am going to make it through this year if it kills me
Good morning SteamGAF :D So i missed all Assassin's Creed discussion (Ezio trilogy is the best from AC2 to ACR) and Shadownet comeback (Welcome back mate :D).

P.S. Merry Christmas to all SteamGAF members who are celebrating it today (if there is anybody beside me XD).
Have a piece

I'm sorry but I just couldn't let this fly, don't bring up "softcore"/"hardcore" sex if you're going to misinterpret the concept.

I know that. And I think it's stupid and can be changed. My issue is, that Steam allows adult games on their platform, so they might as well allow all adult games. I know I am beating a horse here, but Hatred, Manhunt and Postal are on Steam. And that is somehow worse than consensual sex.

Prudes will rush in saying "that opens the floodgates for non-consensual sex" and it'll be a mess given the other "social" problems games are presently facing.

Valve wanting none of that just ignores the problem and has a ban on all explicit sex scenes.

They can't do that forever. The censoring works with NekoPara, but If My Heart Had Wings is already silly, because it breaks the game. The whole discussion board of it is riddled with people asking about the restoration patch or reporting bugs with it and the screenshots are filled with pictures of said patch. Sure, moenovel did that themselves with their silly idea of a target group, but I guess part of it was to get on platforms like Steam. And I imagine that it will become a bigger issue once more Visual Novels hit the platform that are not All Ages from the begin with.

On the other hand, this would be a good niche for someone to create a competitor that allows such games.

Care to elaborate?

Softcore is often used as shorthand to refer to simulated and/or less explicit depictions sex, rather than hardcore which has explicit depictions of sex. Obviously all video game sex is simulated, but I still think the terms are applicable. I was inaccurate when I said that hardcore sex makes it porn, since you can have softcore porn as well, and hardcore sex doesn't necessarily make a film porn. In practice though, in the US explicit sex almost always earns the "Adult" rating for whatever meduim it's in, which is what I meant.

In any case, Valve is going to go by ESRB ratings for what content it allows on its service (or similar policies for games not rated by the ESRB), and doesn't put games deemed as Adult on it's service. Mature games they are fine with. Different cultures have different definitions of "adult" but since Valve is based in the US, they use the US definitions.

If My Heart Had Wings isn't even Valve's fault. When they localized the game, they only localized the all ages version, and that was well before the game came out on Steam.

This either has or will change. Valve has the AO ESRB logo on its servers and one of the options when flagging a game is "Contains adult content that isn't appropriately labelled and age-gated". "Contains pornography" was added some time later, though, so hentai games and the like are still/would still be a no-no.

Maybe so, but they are still going to adhere to US cultural norms to a point. Just because they are open to the possibility of an AO game being on the service, doesn't mean they are willing to open the floodgates for all adult content on the service. For all we know, it's only there for the next time there is a GTA San Andreas type situation where a game is forced to be re-rated after release, and Valve doesn't want to pull the game from their stores.

Maybe they are toying with the idea of allowing some adults only content on their service, but I still doubt you are going to get uncensored eroge any time soon.

So I uploaded a screenshot the other day of Farming Simulator 15 with an American flag on it, and the only likes are from Europeans. Who knew Europeans loved America more than Americans themselves do?

I just noticed a funny thing: Assassin's Creed Unity boxed retail here in Italy is 51€ for console (usually console games have higher prices), while is 60€ on Steam.

I figured I'd try Unity again today since it's received two or three patches since I stopped playing. It still runs like a dog's breakfast. :(

Jase your avatar reminds me a nun :D

Incidentally...

Just because they are open to the possibility of an AO game being on the service, doesn't mean they are willing to open the floodgates for all adult content on the service.

I said as much in the second half of my post.

Which makes it in-line with every single other content provider service out there. Which leads to that if you want to see adult content as in penises penetrating vaginas or other holes the change must start from the very foundation of censorship.

Sorry but I'll have to snip it
I think it's important to remember that other platform holders classify the depiction of a human body as pornography. Sure steam might not be handling things as best as we might have wished for but they're by no means the worse in the bunch.

Care to elaborate? (I'll have to snip it too.
Had you just said softcore or hardcore it would had been fine but you mentioned softcore sex and hardcore sex, those have a different meaning.
Softcore sex is what would in other terms be called vanilla sex, usually between a happy and loving couple, it mostly contains oral and "regular" sex.
doggy and missionary
It's not implied (in works), it's just as graphical as hardcore sex except it's not inclined to shock people who are more sensitive about the matter.
Hardcore sex is a term more often used for people who explore their sexuality to further lengths and can refer to the physical or psychological realm. It includes both common and more uncommon interests (outside softcore) that result in sexual pleasure.

My apologies. On a second read I see now what you mean.

Ah, I see what you mean then. I didn't mean to imply that at all.

We don't. If anything it would be a "keep your friends close and your enemies closer" situation.
Have at me all you like, this is politically correct and you know it :p

1600x900 borderless upscaled to 1080p monitor works for me. Rock solid 30FPS, image is not that blurry. I have GTX 760 2GB version and 2600K.

I'm just going to pretend the game doesn't exist until I finally pick myself up a 970. I should then be able to sell my pair of 670s for $350~$375, which would cover most of the cost of a second one.

Who is more likely to play Farming Simulator 15, Europeans or Americans?

Just finished Aarklash: Legacy.

In Aarklash Legacy, you control a group of 4 characters with different skills, that combat their way through unfriendly lands. The active pause system allows you to study your enemies to figure out their weak points before engaging them in a fight. You can also play completely in real time, if you so prefer. As you cannot grind levels, loot, or anything else, playing with the right tactic is crucial in this game. The difficulty felt just right, my group would wipe occasionally because of an oversight on my part/ bad strategy, but the game never felt unfair.
There is a fair amount of puzzles in this game, that you need to solve in order to progess the story. Unfortunately, while I love puzzles, they felt pretty samey and some were a bit tedious. But since none of the puzzles take a long time to solve, this was a very minor issue.
Story and characters were pretty much forgettable, but got the job done.
The game is completely voiced.

Overall it's a very well made tactical game, with fun combat but uninspiring puzzle design. If you absolutely hate solving puzzles in games, I wouldn't recommend playing this game, as it has a lot of them.

sorry to hear about puzzles, I usually like those, hopefully it won't be issue for me.
How about sidequests? Are there many, good or bad or neither?

I wrote a steam review a while back, I think it's been grandfathered out by now, but I felt the same way about the puzzles. If I remember rightly, the ones in Act II were ok as they only really hid the best loot, but the number of puzzles in a row in Act III was a little out of control. Amazing game though.

Aarklash is great and has some of the most interesting spins on making healing and tanking tactical and fun I've seen.

I like both of you very much.

The puzzles aren't bad really. It's just that there is only a handful of different types of puzzles, and they are repeated again and again, just a bit more difficult every time. That gets a bit boring after a while.
I didn't really encounter any kind of quests at all, outside of the main quest you have to do. You get to some treasure chests by solving puzzles, rather than going questing.

If My Heart Had Wings is really nice and all character did grow on me. After witnessing two sex scenes and the aftermath I can see why this route makes no sense when you just cut them out. What a shame that moenovel has such weird ambitions.

no sidequests at all? That's surprising.

steamgaf, which game do you think it's closest to Amalur considering combat, number and nature of sidequests and the world?

There are sidequests of sorts in Aarklash, but it's more of the "go off the beaten path a bit and fight this optional boss" type of stuff. The optional fights are pretty crazy at times.

I don't see it happening anytime soon. American companies will likely kept adhering to the american views on sex, and it doesn't help that gaming is seen as a medium for "kids" by parts of the population.

Here's an account of all the troubles a developer had to release a "breast cancer awareness" game in google play solely due to having the word "boob" in the title.

The only hope of Steam situation changing would be for it to become an open API.
