Haha, well, if there's a pre-purchase incentive that isn't just a discount then I'll certainly have it day one. ;)

Haha, not exactly: he's had that avatar for months. (Not that I catalogue these things.)

Haha, I just have a good memory when it comes to Saoirse things. And Valve things. And... well, that's it, because I'm otherwise useless.

Stuff.
you are anything but useless, if only Valve knew how awesome their support can be, they just have to follow your example (><)

I was afraid of that and I was right to be afraid.

So every time a poster with SaoAvatar leaves us, a new one will come and take his place.

Soon the forum will rewrite it's own history. It will be as if her avatar was the near-default, but then a few rebels appeared sporting "meager creatures" in attempt to assault the established order.

Well, she is playing the titular Mary in the upcoming Mary Queen of Scots, so it's only natural. ;)

There goes any chance of that movie being a hit.

ZINNNNNNNNNNNNNNG.

Challenge accepted! I'll forgo Steam games for a year and use that money to ensure it breaks Box Office records. :p

wow true

wtf xelios T_T

I'm fairly certain his game count very recently went up a little bit on the Top 500 list, so he's still alive at least.

Nothing has been said of the PC version since it was announced. If the US/EU console versions don't then I don't like your chances.

I'll wait till you buy it JaseC and you can tell me :D

Console versions had dual audio, but the Eng. dub was really good IMO. I had the Japanese ver. BTW.

I do expect the Steam release to be dual audio too, and I'll be getting it day 1 and hopefully make a giveaway of it =3

Holding off on getting SR4 until the goty comes out, not having those bazillion dlc will bother me and based on what happened with SR3's price I'm sure the full thing will roll around for a dirt cheap price soon enough.

Different publisher, different circumstances.
Unlike the dying THQ, Deep Silver really really wants to suck as much money out of your wallet as it can, which is why they put in as many region locks as there are countries in the world (I am only exaggerating slightly)

What's the verdict on Shadowrun Returns?

Have had it on my wishlist for awhile since I thought it looked decent, but I'm curious to know what people think.

How does it play?

I loved it. Plays similar to XCOM EU and is not very hard to get into. The story is very well written, albeit a bit linear and I was instantly immersed despite being pretty unfamiliar with Shadowrun.

It's great.
Not sure I would agree, but then, I am not a Shadowrun fan and that might have something to do with it.

I found it to be a pretty simple RPG, with few choices to make, and none of them really meaningful, barely no sidequests, an extremely linear main story, fun but simple combat... I hear the DLC campaign is much better, but still constricted by the engine limitations. No idea about the fan campaigns. Overall, I just couldn't get into it. Didn't like it that much.

It has very decent writing though, despite the plot not being particularly memorable up until the point I played the main campaign.

The base campaign is a decent lightweight WRPG with good writing. The engine doesn't seem to be up to the task of something like Baldur's Gate but I still had fun. The developers clearly love the universe.

The Dragonfall DLC adds a second campaign that is a huge improvement in almost every way. The engine is still a problem but it's very much worth playing.

True, but the goty is gonna hit 75% off eventually and I'm trying to exercise some self control until then. The sheer volume of dlc released for the game puts me off getting it until the devs are definitely "done" with the game.

It's good, it looks nice, the writing is great and apparently it now has a proper save system (didn't at launch, only had checkpoints). Having no prior knowledge of the Shadowrun universe the world felt quite rich and the dialogue was flavourful with plenty of flair throughout. It plays like a standard turn based rpg. I enjoyed the original campaign, never really got into user created content as I had some technical issues early on (at least for me) but I'm looking forward to playing through the second campaign in the future, which by all accounts is an improvement over the original.

RE: The discussion about the ethics of RA RA militaristic war FPSes, I think something that maybe should be taken into account here is that most of the teams currently working on Call of Duty started working on other games--violent games for sure, but not military games--and got drafted into working on Call of Duty when their original IPs didn't work as well. I don't begrudge anyone for preferring a job over being shitcanned of course, and I don't begrudge publishers for doing what works, but there's obviously significant market and publisher pressure that's already intruding on creative autonomy on the part of the developers... so the idea that asking for devs or pubs to do less of this type of game or to do it more maturely is in any way censorship doesn't make sense in light of the fact that relatively few projects in 2014 are actually initiated and executed by creatives out of some pure need to express certain themes. Personally I don't view intellectual or social pressure as any less fair or legitimate than mass market pressure.

Oh for sure. I think in my haste to rattle something off quickly I didn't spend enough time putting forward a constructive argument.

I'm not saying these games shouldn't exist or that there should be less of them as there clearly is an audience who enjoy them (and I myself have done in the past) but on the other end there is nothing else as a counterpoint or maybe show a different side of the story that these games paint. Maybe there just isn't enough interest from the audience to warrant a game being made, certainly not in the larger budgetary sense. But like in the movie industry the movement came from the breakaway from the studio system and as More_Badass posted there are some games that are touching on different themes from smaller outlets. You could even find more mainstream games with a antiwar message within them (Fallout straight away comes to mind and to a lesser extent Football Manager have been a supporter of War Child for a number of years).

I certainly don't feel there should be any pressure to make something, either market, political or financial. I do see a clear under representation in the market though where other entertainment platforms have had great success both commercially and critically. Maybe I'm in the vast minority here wanting to see more diversity?

Anyway it's probably best not to waffle on in here.

Do you guys know if Call of Duty 2 is still being played online?
Last I heard, if I'm remembering well, there are still some populated modded servers which are also pretty good. You shouldn't trust only my word on that though.

Ah, good memories. I'm not too into online gaming, but modded CoD 2 remains the best experience that I've ever had with an MP game.

Real brief bullet points description: Combat is turn based and happens on a grid. There's a cover system. There's a lot of classes and skills. Role playing depends on stats and skills, with a tiny amount of them being exclusively for dialog while the rest pull double duty between combat and role playing.

The first campaign is pretty strictly linear, with...Only one? Optional map/mission. But lots of stuff in nooks and crannies you can miss or not qualify for skill wise. Apparently the Dragonfall campaign is much more open and similar to the "original" games, though I haven't played it yet.

It's not too long, it's not too hard, it's got pretty good writing. The user made mod community is pretty active. It's fairly replayable due to missing out on race/class stuff, though I didn't feel compelled to jump right back in after I finished it.

If you're jonesing for a western RPG with emphasis on writing and world building, or are a fan of the source material, it's an easy recommendation. If you're not gonna play it right away though, there's no harm in waiting on it.

Anyone played Assault Squad 2 yet? Always wanted to get into the Men of War series.

Speaking of, I wasn't a fan of what was essentially a bait-and-switch: the pre-order period, 30% discount and all, ran for a few weeks before, just two days prior to the stated release date, it was announced that the game would be released as an Early Access title and the 30% discount would remain in place until v1.0. I wouldn't have pre-ordered the bloody thing if I'd known that.

So I poke my head out of SteamGaf for a bit and I see COD Advanced Warfare. Why?

Because modern warfare is ww2 is scifi fps. We're back to scifi fps, so in 4-5 I expect a real sweet looking landing at Normandy to happen and we'll all suck it up because we're super tired of scifi fpses.

I'm gonna check out these mods. It's still my favorite online shooter alongside Rainbow Six 3.

I'm not sure if any GAFfer is still considering picking up Child of Light but I'm Live streaming it right now.
not the PC version
:)

I just beat pixeljunk shooter and it tells me "to be continued", i guess there's a second game not on steam :(

yup. Shooter 2 came out on the PS3 and I guess it should come out on PC eventually, given that Q has said very recently that they've had a lot of success with their steam/pc ports.
