That's mandatory now. But it can be bypassed easily now.

It's secure as long as you aren't stupid. Mostly they ask you to download steamguard.exe which uploads required data to hackers server and then they can login with username and password.
Netcode isn't exactly a general thing like a texture or an audio file. Sure, there are common protocols involved, but Steamworks has its own way of communicating data between clients/the client and server, as does XBL and PSN.

I'm still deciding on whether or not to pre-load the game. I probably won't play it.
If it was its own thing it would have been recieved better i believe, the downgrade from dmc4 is just too great.

did you play with the mod that allows all weapons to hurt colored enemies? I installed that before I even began. I enjoyed the gameplay, story was lame though, and the writing was beyond awful. I mean yea regular dmc has bad writing too but it doesn't try to take itself serious like this game did. A lot of its shortcomings could've been forgiven if it was a brand new ip instead of trying to piggy back off of another ip imo
