I finally bought a new PC last week, and then I spent the weekend building it and installing the OS, a few programs and Steam (copied the games from my previous rig so as to avoid downloading them again).
This is what I got:
- CPU: Intel i7 4790K 4GHz, 8M cache
- Graphics card: Asus GeForce Strix GTX 980 4GB
- Motherboard: Asus Z97-E/USB3.1
- RAM: 2x Kingston HyperX Fury DDR3 8GB 1866 (16GB total)
- SSD: Samsung SSD 850 EVO 250GB
- HDD: 2x WD Caviar Green SATA3 3TB (6TB total)
- PSU: Seasonic M12II-750 EVO Edition 750W
- Monitor: LG 23" 23MP55HQ-P
- Case: Thermaltake Urban S41 Black
- Mouse: Logitech G502 Proteus Core
- Keyboard: Logitech G105
- OS: Windows 10 Pro x64 (got it for free thanks to my university, along with Office 365)
I ended up going for an i7 instead of the the i5 4690K I originally wanted, because I could afford it and decided that if I wanted to get a good PC, I'd rather make it as good as I could (while keeping the price somewhat reasonable). Same deal with the GTX 980 instead of a 970; I'm going to be paying it during the next 6 months, so I can deal with a higher amount than if it had been in one single payment (that said, I looked into the 980 Ti and realized it was way too expensive, even in monthly installments). Got a quality PSU, as I've been suggested in this thread, and a 250GB SSD as the system drive (wasn't going to buy one originally, so I blame you guys!)
What I didn't get is a mechanical keyboard. They are very expensive, and I didn't feel comfortable with buying one without knowing how it feels. Who knows, once I'm done paying all of this maybe it couldn't hurt to get one. Upgrading the 3TB drives is also another option for the future, but for now it's fine. Need to get some speakers too, though I'd need to buy a new desk first and rearrange my room, as there's currently no way it could fit since I'm also keeping my old PC there.
Those of you who praised the speed of SSDs weren't kidding: this PC goes from 0 to desktop in less than 10 seconds. It's disgustingly fast and it scares me. Plus Chrome, the Office applications and basically everything else take half a second to launch and be responsive. I'm using it just for Windows, non-gaming software and Guild Wars 2. Regarding the "old school" drives, I decided not to put them in RAID 0 after reading several articles and forum posts advicing against it on the internet; instead I went with one drive for games and the other for everything else (documents, videos, music, downloads, all that stuff).
Yeah, I know the location's all messed up, but there's nowhere else to put it at the moment. I'll find somewhere more comfortable one of these days.
