SteamWorld Dig 2 |OT| New Digs

I don't want to quote GhaleonEB's post out of fear of spoilers, but they've said something I want to ask about:

Is there any way to know when you have all the mobility upgrades? Or perhaps upgrades in general? I really don't know how many upgrades to expect or how big this game is, so I keep going through areas and wondering, "Should I already be able to do this thing and I'm just bad at the game, or am I missing an ability?" The only upgrade I suspect I will get eventually is
perhaps some kind of jetpack because I've seen a few areas that seem to require flight and I can't think of any other way I could overcome that.

You'll know*.

Whoa,
Vectron
was straight-up survival horror. Heavy atmosphere, and incredible background art too, even by this game's high standards.

I believe all the general upgrades ends at 10. Your highest mobility upgrade is not part of those, but it has a cost that's extremely high.

I'm taking my time with this game and I enjoy the main areas, but the supermeatboyish additional caves that started appearing at some point in the game are getting on my nerves. Cross the entire cave without touching buttons - yeah fuck you game. ;p

In the main cave directly below the city I dug down to a point where jerk Navi warned it could be dangerous to go deeper. It’s directly below a point where you fall into a big pool of water and there are spikes on the walls... is this indication of a point of no return/end game?

Lol did that one a few minutes ago and beat it on the second try. The second set of buttons is the tricky bit.

That's the bottom of that particular cave. You can go there with the right toolset.

Glad I decided to boot up the game again because there were 2 caves I straight up missed in the fire dungeon. I'm at 36/42 relics, maybe I can get them after all.

I realized that with this game the areas are pretty big, but you only realize that after the fact. The moment to moment gameplay is so good that you're not focused on the size of the world. While playing Area 3 in SR on the other hand, I was well aware of its size and length.

And done. 13 hours and change with 87% secrets. Now to clean up the rest.

Definitely gonna be on my GotY list.

For those that have finished this. I am at the part where I am
going around destroying the three doomsday devices spread around the world
. How near the end am I?

Once you've done that you're very close to the end, but if you're only at the beginning of your current objective it can take a few hours, since that's the longest mission in the game.

Collected the remaining artifcats and watched a vid of the trials on YouTube, fastest road to success :p Think this game will also net a spot in my top 10 this year, glad I bought it.

I think I might've screwed up :( my session is not in a unbeatable state, but I think I just realized that ores and gems are limited resources that don't regenerate, and I died once or twice while holding a big haul. I'm wondering if that means I can potentially be unable to get all the upgrades I want.

That one pick axe gear that gets me money per pick axe kill might be able to help, but it would take a very long time if it does work...

Yeah, taking me a good chunk of time. I'm currently nearing the 2nd one. Game is addicting as fuck. Couldn't believe when I saw the in game clock said I was at 5 hours of play time. Doesn't seem like it at all.

You should be fine, I think. There are other boosters as well that can increase the money collected, if you need to. I assume you have invested in the ability to loose less when you get reassembled?

Nah, I think you'll be fine. I've died like a dozen times while exploring and still managed to get all of the upgrades at end game. There's a generous amount of resources available.

Finally got to this today and have played the first 45 mins. or so and yeah I'm hooked....it's gonna suck me in.

The gameplay loop is addicting, fun, and rewarding and I love the setting/characters and the charm of the world.

Game looks incredible IMO in handheld mode too...everything is vibrant and pops and I love it.

Just finished the game. About 8.5 hours and 95% secrets. Really enjoyed my time with the game. Definitely a step up from Dig 1. Can't wait to see what they are working on next.

That's the thing, I hadn't had the lose-less-resources gear equipped for the longest time since I usually did well enough to not die. It's only when I go further into the game with bigger hauls and bigger challenges when I realized I needed the insurance :( I definitely have it on now though.

The Double Rainbow gear is super nice for sure, it's so nice I even remembered the name for it.

Oh that's a relief. I hope it pans out this way for me too :)

I've hit the endgame dying about 7 times and I'm short at least 4k for the remaining upgrades.

When I first got that objective I thought I was close to the end of the game and was kind of disappointed.

Turned out that I had 5-6 more hours to go!

I really like how this is paced and not just in terms of level structure - though that's excellent as well - but also how you mostly spend time in menus, when you are in town. Typically in mining games you spend too much time managing inventory, menus and items IMO (not to mention crafting), and while there are some things to do in menus in SWD2 when in the field/dungeon, it never took up much time in my experience. Even healing is (again, mostly) done without having to equip or manage/use potions.

It gives it such a nice flow, with the town being menu time and outside it it's mostly exploring or digging. Other games could learn from that.

Cashing in your haul is also really rewarding. It only takes two trips into the mines, on average, to earn enough to buy a new upgrade that makes you feel stronger in a meaningful way. The sense of character progression is strong.

Enemies respawn and drop blood stones. You should equip the cog that doubles the chance of getting blood stones.

Yes, it's very well laid out.

One thing it does differently from many mining games is rarely giving the player the sense of being far away from town, wanting to return, but that's due to how easy traversal is and the readily available teleporters. Town is always just a stonethrow away.

I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but it fits with the cosy atmosphere the game exudes.

Finished it with 100% completion after 12h. Absolutely loved it, particularly the latter half after I unlocked all the abilities. Just excellent pacing, platforming and presentation. Super impressed by how Image & Form keep raising the bar on their games; I loved Steamworld Heist, but this is next level.

I need help with Mushi Mushi Snuggery, that cave in Yarrow with the bouncy shrooms. I got the artifact and the cog, but for some reason I appear to be missing something.

Edit: Nevermind I strangely got the tick after receiving the next upgrade.

The music is amazing and I'm only about an hour or so in, just hitting the wall underneath the town at the moment due to Golf Story grabbing me. Looking forward to getting stuck in to this now.

I was worried the game would be less fun with all the upgrades, but with all those tricks up your sleeve it actually makes traversal more fun.

Man the exploration becomes so much more enjoyable once you obtain the last big upgrade. I needed just that to have a motivation to revisit all the locations and find missing secrets (I still haven't finished the game, just planning for the future ;)).

Hmm, that seems a little worrying :( I'm definitely going to play more conservatively now. Definitely going to be more liberal with bomb usage. I was originally killing everything with my pick axe for the bonus exp and cash gears, but the bonuses are small relative to what I need now, so they're not worth using I think.

:O that's a good point. It certainly explains why I'm still getting blood stones late in the game. I'm not sure why I didn't notice this lol

Finished at 13 hours and 76% secrets.

I might restart the game and do it again. I missed the sequence break trophy (didn't read them first), and am way short on cash to buy the final upgrades. I didn't prioritize any upgrades to increase my income, so I'll do that this time around.

Definitely play with quest markers turned off. I love games that allow exploration and reward discovery, and this game does both in spades.

Did Golf Story steal SD2's thunder? I get the feeling it has undeservedly lost momentum since Golf Story released.

They're completely different games, and Dig 2 is such a compulsive experience that judging from this thread, most launch-week adopters blasted through it in a marathon run before Golf Story had even been released.

Oddly, though, Golf Story has a more distinguishable concept. On the face of it, it isn't obvious that Dig 2 is so much better than the average indie 2D platformer (Dig 1 included), so it never reached nearly the same levels of pre-release hype. Most of its momentum came from word-of-mouth from those who played it.

Comment about the ending.

Does this mean no more Steamworld games? They blew the entire planet up! Interesting that in the end, we actually fail utterly at achieving out goal and have to bail off the planet.

Steamworld Heist is a sequel to this game, as it takes place in space. Can't wait for SWD3 with asteroid mining!

Any hints for the third part of Minecart Madness? It's got be stumped.

EDIT: nvm I think I've got it. Really damn good puzzle I must say.

The way that you see little chunks of earth and satellites strewn about with shacks on them in the ending makes me hope the next will be some weird Mario galaxy-ish planetoid hopping game where you're mining weird space rocks. Maybe searching for a new home world, or something

Debating on whether or not I should buy this. Liked the first one but didn't love it....

That's about where I landed with this one. Reliably solid and very well made but didn't blow me away or anything. more secrets and challenges than the first though, so the road to 100% is more varied imo

I’ve got everything at 100%except Yarrow, which is at 96%. Frustrating because I’ve already given it a full sweep once just to check for anything I might have missed. Does anyone have suggestions on secrets easy to miss there? I have all artifacts. And every cave in Yarrow is marked as done.

Edit: got it

this is what i am stuck at too. hook a brother up and let me in on what you found. it’s worth a shot that it was i am missing...

The ending is a setup for SteamWorld Heist (which takes place in outer space) which is a great game, hope they make a sequel.

About Fen (ending spoilers)...
Is there a good ending where you actually manage to rescue him/her? And is Dig 2's Fen the same character as Heist's Fen?

Also, did anyone else think the game kind of ended with a whimper instead of a bang? I feel like there should have been
one final crazy mission/area after the 3 doomsday devices, but before Rosie. I came away from the game with a little bit of a sour taste because the 3 devices seemed to be building up to something bigger, but it never happened for me.

No to the 1st question. Pretty sure it's the same on the 2nd question, which would mean that the task in your 1st question happens anyway.

Guys I'm at 96% in Yarrows with all caves checkmarked.

Any ideas?

The final cogs for me turned out to be in the middle of the path towards the bottom. One was just past an acid pool you had to swim through, and one I believe was on the underside of some unbreakable blocks in the mosquito area.
