Steel Diver: Sub Wars v2.0 update now available.

axisofweevils

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Torpedo me if old.

From NWR, a reminder of what the update does:

Version 2.0 will also add bonuses for winning streaks in Internet Battle Mode's Matched Skill Battles. Premium Version owners will be able to choose from a wider variety of submarines as they gain levels after the update, and more subs will be added to the game's Online Shop as well. Finally, in reaction to fan feedback, the team has added a feature in which players will be notified and penalized when they torpedo their allies.

Not seeing anything in the eShop about updates. I go to "Updates" under the settings menu and get greeted with the dialog box, "There are no updates available for any of your titles."

Edit: Never mind, updating! Time to take a gander at the new shop submarines!

-Free version players must pay 2 Play Coins to play Internet Mode
-Additional changes

What? Is it a one time fee or do I have to pay for every round I play? On the eShop description it says "Two Play Coins are required for users of the Free Version to participate in Internet Mode" so it sounds like a one time fee, but it seems like such a weird thing to add. Were they just trying to add to the checklist of advantages the Premium version has?

Yeah, I don't get it. It's incredibly easy to walk 200 steps to get the coins, so what's the point?

So I just tested it. You DO need to pay 2 Play Coins for every round of online you play. That's so fucking stupid.

On one hand, glad it's not actual cash

Other hand, makes me less willing to play online often

Guess I could just buy the game haha

I realize they probably had data that a lot of people were playing online without the paid version, but tying it to play coins kind of cripples the demo aspect. They should have made it 2 play coins for 5 or 10 matches, or even 2 play coins per match after the first match each day.

I always wanted Nintendo to put Play Coins to better use, but not like this...

Are they disappointed with the number of people who bought Premium and are hoping this will drive more people to buy it? Because all this is doing is driving me away from the game. Great way to kill the online community, Nintendo.

I'm going to complain about this on Miiverse when they put up the update post.

Gonna be a lot less players now.
I know my sis uses all her coins for Plaza stuff, she won't spend 2 per each online round. Sheesh.

There is absolutely no point in offering this game unpaid if you're gonna tie it to play coins. Ridiculously stupid.

Also for premium users wondering, the new submarines are for players who went beyond Level 50. All three of them score 9/10 in exactly one area:

Garfish Adv. at level 59: 9 in Surfaced Spd
Sea Hound 2 at level 79: 9 in Submerged Spd
Neptune Mk II at level 99: 9 in Health

Even Nintendo's virtual submarines have sequels!

Notably, there are other vessels that score 9 in these areas as well, but these new, higher-level submarines rank higher in their other traits than the lower-level ones.

On the paycoin subject, I find it noteworthy that the 3 new submarines I mentioned, and all shop submarines, are separated by the other submarines by a loading screen. It's possible that, based on the wording of the patch notes, that they might have opened up the leveled up submarines, not counting these 3 new submarines and shop submarines, to the free version as a trade off for the pay coin bit. Can anyone confirm this?

And just like Nintendo's consoles, there's no consistency in their naming conventions!

I went through the sub selection screen and every sub other than the first two still says they're a premium unlock.

Actually, this is a fairly good point in a different way than you intended. If they went for naming consistency, they might have named these vessels Black Eel Adv., Snakehead 2, and Super Cod Mk II respectively, since these are the vessels that rank 9 in the same categories as the new ones.

I assume the naming inconsistency with II, 2, and Mk II is to give the feeling that these submarines come from different nations.

Something really interesting to note:

Once you unlock the premium version of the game to gain access to the premium shop, unlike the other shop submarines which cost 0.99 USD each, the Blue-Marine from Star Fox is free.

Pretty cool of them to do that considering that's the one DLC sub any Nintendo fan would be most interested in. Grabbing it now! (And maybe that final boss sub from the first Steel Diver later.)

There really is an excellent variety of submarines in the shop at this point: submarine aircraft carriers, nuclear submarines, World War II submarines from all sides of the conflict, Cold War submarines from both sides (including a Russian cruise missile submarine), video game submarines, and a throwback to the series itself!

If you haven't already checked out the premium sub store... the Blue Marine is currently free. Best to grab it quickly, in case that's a time limited promotion.

It is limited, Nintendo said so earlier:

If you buy/own the Premium Version of #SteelDiver: Sub Wars before 19/6 you get the Blue-Marine for free!
The Blue-Marine will become available to buy separately on #SteelDiver: Sub Wars after 19/6. It'll be €0,99

The 2 Play Coins thing is a bit odd, and definitely a little bit of a pain. That said, Nintendo likely have data about their StreetPass games (Quest, Squad etc.) *and* about Sub Wars that's informing this decision. If it has a bit negative impact - and this will certainly be visible straight away in number of players, conversion rates etc. - then I'd imagine a tweak will be on its way very soon. They seem do be embracing a more agile development model with SW after all.

I own the game, but to be honest... that play coin thing is clever. It should be 1 coin though. Also, the should up the coin limit to 500. Stuck at 300 currently. Already maxed the 2DS and the 3DS XL.

They should do some kind of "remix arcade" free to play that makes non purchasers pop play coins like quarters in an arcade.

I'm glad I stopped playing it actively a month ago, otherwise this update would have been really painful. Really stupid decision, that way you aren't favoring or adding extra value to previous Premium users, just screwing the free ones. I'm prety sure they will back down once they see the decline in the number of players.

Have the premium, so it's an awesome update for me! Game rocks and anyone interested should just go buy it, I guess? I bought many useless games for more before.

What? This update is great for premium owners. How is a new multiplayer map and more subs not adding extra value?

This whole play coin thing is obviously to try to entice more people to upgrade. Very clearly a test run.

Yes, businesses shouldn't make money. I agree.

This will rather lead to a decrease in "free" player count, which will subsequently result in a decrease of total players. As a result, I fear that the online mode will be as dead as in various other "dead" niche titles.

I think it is a good idea, but I wish they didn't add it in retroactively. Gimping games over time is a pet peeve of mine, much more so after paying for the game (though luckily that's not the case here).

Well, they really fucked up the online battles now. My brain says to never play the game again in order to show my dissatisfaction but my heart says to get the premium version...

Honestly the play coin thing is dumb simply because 2 coins for 1 match is rather strict. Otherwise I don't see the big deal.

If someone wants to play more than 5 matches a day they should probably upgrade so they can get the other subs and stuff anyway. I'd probably upgrade if there were more single player content, but I'm just not interested in the multiplayer enough to justify the price for me personally.

I was agreeing with you, so I have no idea what you're trying to explain to me.

Edit: Figured it out. On my phone, accidentally deleted the latter part of my post. Fixing now.

This thing is in the shop; in real life, it could carry nuclear cruise missiles. It's also rather durable in-game according to its stats. Considering getting it....

Edit: Got it.

...and given how (relatively) on the ball the Steel Diver dev team seem to be, I strongly suspect that if player count nosedives and this doesn't have what seems to be the intended effect (to push free players to premium) then they will ease off or reverse the decision.
