Was decent. I like slice of life episodes that give us some insight into Steven's personality. How he thought Onion only hangs around him because Onion has no friends his age... Only to find out he was the one without friends his age... And Onion genuinely concerned about him, all in an 11 minute episode.

While I'd be lying if I said I was super entertained by Onion Gang, there was a core bit of character development for Steven in that he realized that as odd as Onion is, even he has more friendly peers than Steven himself.
Socially Steven has been sheltered from a lot of social situations growing up, and lately he's been participating in events that are really for much older people (drift racing, garage concerts, fighting fascist juggernauts, killing former allies). I have to feel like the show is trying to lead to Steven having an epiphany that allows him to naturally mature to an older physical state. Emotionally he's matured immensely from episode 1; conflicts have gone from his favorite treat being discontinued to saving the world to making peace between his father and his dead mother's would-be lover. Kid's had to deal with a lot.
On another note, this episode really makes me wonder about these mute humans named after foods or objects. I thought Onion was just a one-off strange character who was more abstract than others, but this ep indicates that there's more to it, especially when you consider the slow-burn world building the crewniverse likes to do. Steven at one point even questioned if Onion was human, and Yellowtail is similarly odd - do these guys carry genes that were tampered with by ancient Gems? Well, I'm stretching to give this ep credit, but at least it did get me wondering about that kind of stuff.

When things go dark around Onion, is that from Steven's point of view or is Onion literally a wizard?

Not awful, not good, just kind of boring. Only episode I've liked in Season 4 so far is Mindful Education. Everything else has been just meh or bad.
I'm usually cool with the Beach City Resident episodes, but the ones they've been doing recently have just been uninteresting. Season 2 and 3 had some pretty good town episodes IMO because the situations were usually over the top or Steven injected some gem magic into the townspeoples' lives. These recent ones have just been standard scenarios with mundane solutions.

Just watched Onion Gang - the one thing I take from it is that the summer is over in Beach City -- The beginning of summer was all the way back in Mirror Gem! I get a sense this is going to be the beginning of a stylistic and tonal change for the show.

oh youre right lol. i was getting my girlfriend into this show so we just watched up to ocean gem today over like 4 hours today and just noticed it mentions the beginning of summer around then quite a bit. my mistake!

Yeah, I think a lot of the fans would like more gem and earthling interactions. Lapis decides to try working the counter at Fish Stew Pizza! Peridot adopts a cat! Pearl goes on a gameshow filming in Beach City!

though to be fair onion is just an alternate dimension steven as they have the same voice actor

I was watching Dexter the other day and I thought that the townies are this show's Miami Metro Police Dept: too often disconnected from the main plot, minimal character development, and tethered to mundane subplots that actually feel jarring with the rest of the show.
We probably won't be seeing any episodes for a while, but as I recall there were several titles leaked that were meant for shorts.
Maybe during the dry spell they'll deign to release them on their youtube channel. So, you know, something to maybe look forward to.
International CN youtube channels will probably upload them first because that's how they roll.

I've been working on recreating a shot from jailbreak in 3D for the past few months. Not done yet, but I'm getting close. Any tips on how I can make it look better? Trying to make it look like the show as much as possible, from the 3D models to the lighting. Figured I'd ask you guys first since y'all are familiar with the look of the show. Also we're on hiatus so whatever.
Like, if something doesn't 'feel' right about the materials or the proportions look wrong somewhere. I'm trying to make it look as professional as possible.
When I am done, I'll render it out and post a video here. It'll be a ~40 second long video panning around the scene and showing all the angles of the characters. Should be in the next couple weeks. Sadly there wont be any animation, thats a whole nother project lol.

As for the episode, there was something that i felt was curious, Steven being unable to understand the kids playing pretend with Garbanzo "dying" and Pinto bringing him back, perhaps he felt offended because he does have healing powers that he briefly lost, but him thinking they were pranking Pinto instead of just playing make believe was an interesting writing choice.

Well, if you're wanting to make it look like the show, definitely get a cel shader in there. That's the biggest thing missing I can see immediately.
Cel shading is the concept of lighting objects the way 2D animators do (it gets its name for the animation cels used), with areas of shadow being clearly defined, uniformly strong shadows.
You should want an outline shader as well.
When searching, be aware that many (stupid) developers/3D animators confuse outlines with cel shading, may call it toon shading or any number of wrong things.

Garnet, Amethyst, Pearl, Steven, and Connie all singing together at the end. Such a nice family moment.
