Street Fighter II: Animated Movie Chun-Li vs Vega, best game to movie scene ever?

So wait, can I watch the unrated edition, uncut unedited, with the American soundtrack? I like my rock / rap music.

My understanding its basically everything for everyone.

Japanese with subtitles.

Dub with original Japanese audio.

Dub with American soundtrack/audio and unedited dialogue.

Completely unedited.

Basically everyone wins.

My man - I was literally just thinking about this scene the other day. It's amazing - though I'm not sure if it's the best in the movie.

This is definitely the best animated VG adaptation though. Best movie adaptation of a game? Very possibly.

i just want to say how much i love the art direction/character design here. I love it when Japanese artists try to actually draw humans. Too bad that this is so rare now.

Wait wait wait, I watched the UK Manga Entertainment VHS release of this movie years ago and I don't remember Chun-Li doing her kikoken during this fight :O was it cut?

Yup just caught up with the rest of the thread, that's what I get for skipping to the last page :p

This was such a good fight. Heck, this is still one of my favourite game to movie/anime adaptations. Just wish the UK bluray version didn't have the cut language :(

Sakura Taisen adaptations are very good too. The 2001 movie has some impressive mecha battles, animated by Production IG.

As if it took 10 years and three different generations of video formats since the original VHS to get an uncut, uncensored release of the western version of this film. The Discotek DVD came out at the end of last year, so it just squeaked inside the decade.

Edit: Wait, I'm forgetting Australia. They had the full movie on VHS back in 1995 while the rest of us were missing various degrees nudity, violence, cursing, and drawn out moments in scenes that were assumed to linger too long for westerners with nanosecond attention spans.

But the upcoming US Discotek bluray's not region-free, correct?

I'm just a sucker for getting the best version for these timeless classics, 'tis all.

As yet unconfirmed either way. This is Ashura's post in response to that question from a few pages back:

I don't know what the contract says. Generally I think we keep things region free unless the contract specifies it has to be locked. Sorry I can't give you a better answer. :(

This opening for me.. wow... I never got tired of it.. I still get goosebumps.. it's just amazing!! Especially the perfect timed music..
This movie truly still holds up.

Watched this over and over when I was a kid.

The Ryu hadouken moment was rewind city for me. The set up, the animation, the music, just perfect.

Wow this is so cool. I never knew about this before. I hope some things like this can potentially make it into the Discotek release.

What the... that's awesome, this was cut? Why?!

It wasn't cut. It was made for yet another Street Fighter II game based on the movie that was released in Japan only. There were a few animated cutscenes like the above (another of which had Akuma/Gouki) that were made by the same studio.

IIRC the game allowed you to choose the robot observer and fight the other characters in the game. That old Shadaloo scientist was also in the game.

Edit: Found some of it on youtube:

The whole Movie game is a bizarre curiosity for sure. I've been unable to find any complete footage or walkthroughs.

That said, I think there's some misinformation about the infamous "fireball" moment. While a lot of footage was added to the tie-in game and a wiki says the fireball was in the game, I've been unable to find any footage of it and, from what I remember reading ages ago in a Japanese magazine (I can't remember the source, though I'll continue to look), the fireball was only partially animated for the original film but was cut (and the images included show that the fireball effects vanish after a few frames because it was never completed). The Saturn/PS1 game also used highly compressed footage, while the scans floating around are pristine (and I can't find any other pristine shots of any other included footage).

The interview I read (again, can't cite my source, sorry) stated it was simply a creative choice that, because the fight was so visceral and so hand-to-hand, the director wanted to keep it as "grounded" and "balanced" as possible, which resulted in the removal of the scene before completion to instead focus on the physicality of the fighters and, in particular, Chun-li's resourcefulness and use of her surroundings to get an edge in the fight instead of simply "zoning" with a fireball against a fighter with no projectile abilities. The creative choice to remove the fireball forced both fighters to get up in each other's faces, and the removal put Chun-li at risk every time she engaged since she was weaponless, thus heightening the stakes of the fight.

I'll do my very best to try and track down that info to confirm it, and I readily admit that I'm running off of memory from something I read nearly two decades ago at a time when I actually could understand Japanese. I could very well be remembering incorrectly, but I was religiously interested in the Animated Movie back then and I recall that interview and that explanation sticking out to me at the time.

Edit: It actually wasn't just Chun-li. Again, going off memory here, but the director intentionally ensured that any fighter with a projectile attack never used it against a fighter who lacked one. That's why he paired up fights with fighters lacking projectiles - such as Honda vs Balrog and Blanka vs. Balrog - while always ensuring a character with a projectile never used one against a fighter lacking one - such as Chun-li vs. Vega, Ryu vs. Fei Long, or Dhalsim vs. Honda. It kept the fighting field "level".

The thing that blew my puny child brain was the animation and detail.

It was like finding the Holy Grail after going from the Saturday morning Street Fighter show that I, of course, was a fan of...

to THIS:
As shallow a it sounds, animation quality was the thing that initially drew me towards watching anime in the mid 90s. For someone used to the quality of saturday morning cartoons, movies like Ghost in the Shell or even SF2 were goddamn revelations.

Actually, I have the clip of her performing kikoken. It's pretty damn old avi that I downloaded back in 2003. I have a clip of that and Akuma doing the Hadouken but the alt ending I had and opening though I think got corrupted as I have sound but the picture hasn't really played in years.

Speaking of remembering things 2 decades ago, I remember seeing the awesome screenshots of this movie in Gamefan magazine.

They always had the coolest layouts and although their layout of SF2: TAM wasn't anything special, they knew how gorgeous the movie looked. It was basically (if I remember correctly) 2 pages of nothing but screenshots in a grid format with little to no text. Just 24 screenshots per page. It was basically Gamefan saying "words aren't even necessary".

They're very, very small files. Remember, pre-youtube days. The Chun Li clip is 982 KB and the Gouki one is 897 KB. I can probably email them to you guys if you want and host them for others if that's okay.

I'd say you should host it for download and upload it to Youtube. Even if they're tiny, they're worth preserving!

So the movie is more "exploitative" than the game. No one complained about that. If they had Chun-Li wearing only a ripped t-shirt with her bra and underwear showing every time she moved people would lose it.

Done.

Chun Li Kikouken: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2qo6bFvf6U&feature=youtu.be

Gouki/Akuma Hadouken: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyiItR0uT6Y&feature=youtu.be

Unfortunately the Alt End didn't have any picture when I tried to upload it. Only sound made it through.

Sorry for the quality, but they are old files.
Sure enough, there it is. I'll be damned.

I wonder if there's some uncompressed footage floating out there somewhere. But this will do nicely.

Damn those clips are awesome. I think it was a wise choice to cut projectiles like they did, but it's great to see more footage.

It was '95 or '96 and my brother somehow got a fansub of the uncensored version. The cover printout of the vhs had chunli's bare breasts on the back of the box during that shower scene. Watched it as soon as I could.

Not to self plug too much but I post a lot of updates about what I'm working on on my twitter, here: https://twitter.com/ashuraou

And I'll definitely be posting more SFII there soon, hopefully. I also work for Labzero games as UI Designer/Production Artist so I post about that too, sometimes.

You can also follow DiscotekMedia on twitter here for general updates: https://twitter.com/discotekmedia

We recently did a new ultimate edition of IGPX and we're working on finishing up Magic Knight Rayearth and Darkstalkers right now.
Wow, a Wicked City release. Will buy. Wish it was on Blu though. I see the DVD is listed as January 26, 2016, and it's on Amazon, so sweet. Not to derail the thread, but any details about it in general as far as the transfer? Would kill for more of these releases.

Edit: Actually found the cover post:

You guys are doing good work!

Thank you!

This is awesome stuff.
Nice to see Akuma get up off his ass instead of being a part of Dhalism's background stage (even though that was a cool little easter egg)

Wish this same team were able to make a sequel involving Akuma.

This is a god damned revelation! Between this and that clip from before where they go back in time, it's like Christmas for me!

There's a LOT of good stuff surrounding this film.

I was lucky enough to have one of the art books surrounding the film.

They went into insane detail with even the background and secondary characters.

The Perfect Album is worth checking out too and is probably more affordable at this point. Both are jam-packed with lots of great, rarely used promo art and character models and designs.

I remember watching this when Super Turbo was in arcades and feeling awesome when I spotted Akuma in India. Edit: Holy cow, he had an animated scene?!

If there is some original soundtrack that existed before the American songs were added, I don't want to know. The songs before and during Chun Li's fight fit so well.

Also: What's the deal with Ryu spotting Bison in the truck?

Thank you for the info, especially about that chun li book. I'll check that out. any verifiable information is also worthwhile. So please keep posting.

The Complete Works has this really amazing looking Shadaloo North Korean looking propaganda poster on the other side of the slipcover. I need to scan that.

What kind of stuff is in the perfect album?

what he said!
I was lucky enough to come across the "Magnificent...Chun Li" art book...
Never occurred to me to check about other SF2: Movie art books once the internet became available... and I had money.

Have to see if I can track this out of print book down.
