Wow, people thought Ken wasn't a shoto.
Wow. Wow. How does someone even think that.
I had no idea.

Ken players are weird people. Max is no exception to this.
People = Max.
When I first saw F.A.N.G at (I think it was) PSX 2015, I could feel the hype leave my body like a deflated baloon.
Max has gone on record as stating that Ken's face in SFV has single-handedly made him hate the character. Keep in mind, even Ken's character select face is infinitely better than SF4 Ken by leaps & bounds. It's the only character in Street Fighter that comes under such intense scrutiny over how his face looks (excluding Chun in MvCI).

Max is somehow the most popular person in the FGC, so people = Max is unfortunately true.
Imagine having this for Abigail's select portraitAll of this could have really been solved if they hired someone (not Bengus) to draw character select portraits. Or even better, just adjust the character select pose so that Ken doesn't look so goddamned weird. He looks pretty normal in so many other shots.

Same thing with Ibuki. Adjust the camera angle a little bit and I'm sure she'd look fine.
To be fair, I can totally relate to not wanting to play a character based on how shit they look or their shitty personality/backstory (*cough*necalli*cough*). Ken looked like ass in SF4, but he was still in line with the rest of that games shitty style. In SFV, Ken's character select face stands out as especially bad, and it's made worse by the fact that Ken's character is kind of supposed to be a rich pretty boy.

He wears the same clothes as Ken, only it's Red. And his moves look like Ryu's but he's on fire during them.I'm surprised Ken even has fans considering the way Capcom has treated him across two games now. In SF4 he was a He-Man looking motherfucker who occasionally dressed up like Roy Rogers. Now he looks like he dunked his bangs into some Dapper Dan and Capcom gives him some sort of Santa Pimp Evel Knievel costume. I don't think they have any idea what the character is supposed to be.
As someone who got into the fighting game scene in 2015, why IS Max so popular?
It's OK. I moderately like him now, so it all worked out in the end.
Reddit communities (at least for specific gaming ones) tend to follow a very predictable pattern of "the smaller it is, the more friendly and generally better it is".
You go into a place like r/dota2 and the place is a shitfest even though I remember specifically that it used to be a very fun place to hang out like 4 years ago when it was notably smaller.
r/SF and r/Tekken in particular are pretty good communities where there's good jokes, memes and a lot of good discussions to be had. Those guys are also VERY helpful in providing tips and info.
r/Kappa is the polar opposite where there's shitposting, hatred towards SFV and porn aplenty. But good discussion or humour is rarely found. And it's no surprise that r/Kappa is also a very active subreddit.
Same thing he does everywhere else, lose.

Ahh cool.He appeals to a casual audience. When I started to get into fighters around 2011, his content on MvC and eventually SF4/KI was by far the easiest to watch and digest. It's just that his appeal starts to lessen as you start to learn more about fighters and the FGC, and on top of that his content has just gotten a lot worse since he became a full time streamer.
Yeah I don't enjoy his streams at all but some of the videos he puts out, particularly the one where he talks on serious topics (like his recent video on the competition between MvC:I and DBFZ) are actually well made. He does raise very good points in a succinct manner.I like Max because he's an articulate guy and pretty knowledgeable about fighting games (and a better player than most of the people posting on FGC forums). I like him less when he's in streamer mode, though, but he's still one of the more enjoyable fighting game streamers out there.
EVO 2015 was a wonderful time.Wow you got into it the same time as me. Two years ago.

For some reason I actually love that art.
He's YouTuber popular which means he's an excitable guy with lots of catchphrases ("DOODS", "LET'S GO", "DANK HORSESHIT", etc.). For the longest time, and even now to some degree, he was very disliked by the FGC. I like Max because he's an articulate guy and pretty knowledgeable about fighting games (and a better player than most of the people posting on FGC forums). Do we have different definitions of articulate? Not to rag on the guy too much since he genuinely seems like a nice dude, but this just really stood out to me since one of the main things I've noticed about him even from the beginning when I actually subbed to him is that he does not have a way with words. It actually gets hard to listen to him sometimes because of how frequently he flat out misuses words.
Maybe? I haven't noticed anything like that in his videos where he's clearly pre-written things. He sounds completely different when he's reacting to things/streaming matches.
Maybe articulate isn't the best word for what I wanted to express (which is ironic). I think he's able to express his opinions with nuance.
The FGC is fortunate to have Max. I wonder how many people he has brought into the scene just by himself.

Hmmmmm. Here's the thing with Max - he really doesn't cover the games at the top of the FGC. He covered SFV pre-launch but quickly dropped it for his stated reasons. He also doesn't really play or enjoy Smash - he just respects it. He's actually spent more time this year playing Nioh/Bloodborne/Dark Souls 3 on his stream, as well as replaying several older games he really enjoys, whether thats CoD:MWR or FF7.
Of all the fighting games that encompasses the modern FGC, Max probably spends most of his time playing Tekken, the current NRS fighter, & KI. Even then, he didn't play Tekken for a long time; he just went 7 weeks without touching Tekken 7. The latest NRS fighter & KI probably get 70-80% of his fighting game stream time. I'd say his streamed playthroughs of non-fighting games has probably contributed just as much if not more to helping grow his audience than any one singular fighting game he covers at any given time.
All this to say - I really don't make this connection anymore with Max & him being this top FGC streamer, since he doesn't really have a taste for the games that dominate the FGC, and he also spends just as much if not more stream time playing & covering non-fighting games as he does fighting games. Max also rarely, if ever, gives any coverage to big major tournaments that occur unless he's involved in it. He doesn't really go over tournament results or comments on the current happenings on the FGC itself. He doesn't even really interact with other top players in any respective game on stream either.

EE is dying a painful death, but Max is still engaging despite not liking SFV, and really being his own thing (as Sneakers points out).

Let's not talk about the man that has baffled scientists with his ability to fuck up everytime.EternalEnvy is indeed dying a painful death right now.
He also said V and 4 have a similar artstyle, which is far from the truth. Characters in 4 are fair more cartoonish, even without the hardware limitation and it has a bolder color palette. I'd say V is close to 3, than 4 like easily.

A professional Dota 2 player. He's famous because he's VERY good yet does the absolute stupidest things at the absolute worst times.Ucchedavāda;245414139 said:
He's a variety streamer with a focus on fighting games. I don't know what you guys want lol.
He introduces people to the hype that is fighting games. If they want to discover more about the happenings of the FGC it is easy to do so from there.
I don't watch his videos very much anymore, but I still catch some. I like bloodborne and dark souls as well so yeah. Seems fine to me.
Well, I agree with him there and I think a lot people looked at V and felt like it looked too much like 4. With that being said I think V's art style is 10x better than 4's. SFV's art style is what SF4's art style would be if it was executed well.
But I would also say the jump reminds of 2 to 3 or Alpha to 3. In SF4 you had all this slavish devotion to SF2, including the goofy normals looked. A lot of normals in SF2 looked dumb because they were re-using sprites constantly (Guile's upside down kick is a flipped air normal and his sweep is just LK, MK in a row.)
For instance, in III they replaced Ryu and Ken's goofy looking rotating sweeps into something that looks more like an actual sweep. In V they did the same thing. The moves animate with a lot more care in V than they did in IV which felt like they were trying to replicate SF2 too heavily.
I know I'm 100% late on this--and my old man memory probably forgot--but I never realized Abi's throw off his run actually was in FF. Mind blown.
