I’m on Stage 5 and as someone that has been a fan since first playing SOR1 in 1991, my feelings are mixed.

The one thing they nailed (and what was really most important) was that it definitely feels like Streets of Rage in terms of control and feedback. I really wish they included the sprinting and roll moves for how aggressive enemies and bosses are, and I say this as someone that considers 3 the weakest entry.

The music is completely unremarkable and a letdown so far aside from the title screen/intro theme. I’m so focused on maintaining high combos and not getting gangbanged the FUCK out of baddies that it just has no effect on my experience. It’s an afterthought. It doesn’t have that bump or groove to keep me pumped up. It’s just there.

The whole combo system and end of level grading as a whole should just be wiped out and I understand it needed to be modernized in some ways, but I find it to be a distraction and shitty when you bust your ass during a level, only dying once while maintaining 60+ hit combos most of the time and still wind up with a D average. I just want to beat the shit out of goons like the old days without being fucking graded.

/End rant. Game is eh ok so far. Medium Low fun out of 10.

Lol I died twice on the first level. I almost did a perfect no damage run on Streets of rage 2 (fucking chubby boys and spastic Muay Thai fighters! :messenger_grimmacing_}

I'm enjoying it so far. The lack of dash and roll moves on SOR 4 Blaze and axel do make them feel like snails at time, but Blaze 4 lyfe. She is best ass kicker full of the rage.

As for music, eh......took about 10 seconds to switch to SOR 2 them track. That is a masterpiece.

Fun Fact: XBOX One port has been done by Blitworks and the Lead Developer is Miguel Ángel Horna "ElSemi" (@3lsemi). He is the author of these emulators: Nebula (CP1, CPS2, NeoGeo, PGM and Konami), Model 2 (2A,2B,2C), CPS3, Crystal System, Chankast (sound, graphics and Naomi rewrite) and MAME CPS2, CPS3, NeoGeo, Model 2 and Crystal System drivers.

So far I dig the game's aesthetic and animations. Music is okay. The combat on the other hand... I guess it's okay, but maybe just a bit to much of a throw back for my tastes? Played a ton of Fight'n Rage and it's making this game feel very clunky in comparison.

I'm loving the graphics and the music, but the combat just feels off. Way too clunky, and it seems like the enemies are far too mechanical. It feels less like AI and more like enemies following a precise set of unchanging instruction, mixed with too many invincibility frames for them and being way too easy to get knocked out of a attack on your end.

Well I guess the jump super is critical for Floyd. Jump kick enemies then jump super then jump again and you fly across almost the whole screen. Costs life but makes him faster than almost anyone

I also wanted to praise one more thing: Blaze. Still a powerhouse, even hotter, feminine and beautiful. Most of the time I'm playing with her and Adam (he rules). This comment goes out to all the morons who always post shit like "if you want sexiness go watch porn". Fuck you all :messenger_tears_of_joy: Thanks Sega for not turning Blaze into a shitty roided "ambiguous" character to appeal to the idiots. Bring on the jiggle.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
So, do people find this better than The Take Over? I'm not sure yet (i've not played again since my last post). The Take Over is less polished probably and the story/characters are eh but I feel it did more special stage threat stuff like rolling barrels and firearms always add variety in beat 'em ups.

I know it's not better than the best from Capcom, I always go back to those and played some again after beating this once. It could have taken some cues from them, extra mobility's always good, as are additional moves with SF-esque inputs (I'm not saying it should be RPG-lite like Mystara obv).

Dang ... Max still has the ability to hit behind him with melee weapons. This game is definitely the biggest love letter to the series ever.

After getting to finally play Max now, it's really interesting how different Floyd is and how much I've grown to like their playstyles for different reasons. Floyd's dual grab is just so huge, and the ability to grab enemies and then walk around with them. Max can't do that, but he has the crushing headlock move.

And dang, they made the SoR 1 characters hit like a truck.

For all you young-ins that never played them originally, don't forget to stagger your punch rhythm. You can hit a few times and then space out your punches with SoR 1 characters so that you don't knock the enemy over. Just keep jabbing and throwing 2 hits then pausing, and you can keep the enemy standing upright and kill them in one combo.

Played the first two stages. Man having the behind the back strike bound to a button almost feels like cheating.

Combo! Combo! Combo!
I, too, only had a 3 button controller back in the day.

(3 had optional 6 button controls, one button was back attack)

I really like Floyd and Cherry, they have such unique play styles that really switch up the gameplay. Floyd being the most extreme powerhouse we’ve seen in the series yet and Cherry being the most agile character ever made. Once you learn her extra moves it really opens up.

I can’t help but feel like Adam has a big advantage gameplay wise given that he can get across the screen quicker than Cherry, so I don’t actually play as him all that often now. When I do, I tend not to overdo it.

I unlocked the final SoR3 character last night. He is great fun to play, and a real powerhouse. He plays better than he did in 3, and even better than he did in Remake.

Waiting for the inevitable DLC, I’ll buy it as they deserve it (as long as the price isn't ridiculous).

Anyone knows how to unlock the pixellated and scanline modes? I've unlocked several characters (up to Axel-SOR3). Are those modes the last ones to unlock?

It is pretty much the only way to get through Hardest mode on Streets of Rage 2 without losing too many lives in the final few levels!

Beat the game solo and in online co-op yesterday, I think they did an excellent job. Gameplay is fun and it looks and sounds great; I really like the new gray life mechanic so you can use your specials more.

Now I need to play it with the old soundtrack and the CRT filter so I can feel like the old man that I am.

His movement set is from Streets of Rage 3 and he is playable in 3. However, his voice is from 2. That's not a bug.
lol I know, I just really like his SoR2 sprite and the 2 sprite is
in the game
so they have some explaining to do to quarter of a century ago me.

They are there by default (PC). Maybe they need to be patched into some console versions.

Does anyone know why? I didn't even know there was such an option. Bummer.

No. John from Digital Foundry don't even got the oportunity to test the Windows Store version because the game just show the logo and close.

Maybe because both Xbox and Windows Store use the same code (UWP)? Dunno. If I would guess, they made a single version of Game Pass across the entire family.

Blitworks probably thought the options were too PC like and cut them out of the game, all the effects, etc, are on their highest on Xbox and UWP versions but yeah, it's accidentally lost the filters. It should be patched back in though as it has been pointed out in most places and we've already been told that they'll be supporting the game for a while.

Considering 3 dev teams worked on this, I expected a bit more content. The cutscenes were too short, no voice acting, no ending, etc. Doesn't hold a candle to River City Girls but not a bad co op game either. Also Blaze looks great.
