why is 'geoduck' pronounced 'gooey-duck'?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWkKtQKVzz4

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geoduck#Etymology
The name of this clam (/ˈɡuːiːdʌk/ "gooey duck") is derived from a Lushootseed (Nisqually) word gʷídəq[5][6] either a word composed of a first element of unknown meaning and əq meaning "genitals" (referring to the shape of the clam),[7] or a phrase meaning "dig deep".[8] Alternative spellings include gweduc, gweduck, goeduck, and goiduck. It is sometimes known as the mud duck, king clam, or when translated literally from Chinese, the elephant-trunk clam.

Basically it comes from a Native American language with a morphophonemic writing system.

What is the best way to depose of coffee grounds from a French Press?
Find a puppet coffee grounds that will do what you want.

Used grounds are great for gardens and can also deodorize much like baking soda. Save them in an open container outside so they can dry out.

Well let me put it this way. Is it bad if they go down my garbage disposal or should I be composting them?

I have a PC monitor that only has a DVI-D port, with no HDMI ports at all... I really wanted to use it to play with my Wii U, since I don't have a TV on my bedroom either, so I did my research and found there are DVI-D/HDMI HDMI/DVI-D adapters, that work with video game consoles (I found videos of people connecting their PS3 on their monitors with the adapters, so I figured it would work with the Wii U, too). Anyways, my question is, the adapter I purchased was a HDMI male x DVI-D female and apparently it should have been the opposite? HDMI female x DVI-D male? The one I purchased is entirely useless for that purpose I mentioned?

Well, you want the HDMI female/DVI-D male to plug an HDMI cable into the monitor.

With the HDMI male/DVI-D female connector, you could plug it into the WiiU and use a DVI-D cable to connect to the monitor instead.

Otherwise, yeah, it's gonna be kind of worthless for your needs.

I see, thanks for responding.

As for the bold text, are you sure that is supposed to work? Reason I ask is because I tried that and it didn't seem to work, unfortunately.

I don't see why not. It's a digital signal all the way through so there's no converting or anything going on, and a quick Google shows WiiU doesn't really use HDCP so I'm not sure why it wouldn't work :( Were you previously using an HDMI cable with your WiiU? Might need to change the output in the WiiU settings first if you were using component or composite before this.

I see. What you said makes a lot of sense.

And Indeed I was. I had it connected to a Samsung "HDTV" previously. When I connected the Wii U to my monitor using the monitor <-> PC cable, nothing shows up on the monitor.

Well, thanks again!

Yup, since the HDMI is a separate port from what you were using previously, the video will still only output through the other port until you change the video settings on the WiiU (which should be possible with just the game pad, so you don't have to mess with your setup again)

Why does the West Coast lack basements?

I was just reading about this the other day.

Depending on where on the West Coast you are referring to: Basements are not a requirement if you live somewhere it doesn't get cold. Basements in cold areas are used to keep the frost line from messing up the foundation due to Frost Heaving.

Another reason there might not be basements is shallow bedrock making it too hard to dig. Though I have heard this reason referenced more for mountainous regions like Colorado.

Why does the West Coast lack basements?

Foundations in the north are more complicated because they have to be dug like 3 feet below the frost line. So since they're digging all this ground up anyway the trend has been to put a basement. Plus basements are heaven during the summer.

How does a computer know which date and time it is, if it's not online and has been shut down for a period of time. I know you can set it obviously, but if you turn it off and then turn it on maybe a week later, how does it know how much time has passed?

I believe there's a battery or some consistent memory for the BIOS.

Yep, that's the correct answer. When the battery runs out of juice you will have to either set the time manually or set it automatically by looking up the current time on the internet.

Why does my galaxy s3 use so much RAM? its always at like 700/800 with nothing open as far as I can tell, making it pretty unusable. anything I can do? i know it's an old phone but surely it can't be using that much RAM with no apps open

Am I an idiot for just realizing this?? Wondering if it is common knowledge.

Sony's stiffing us on a VAIO computer 2 year warranty that's still active. Something with this touchscreen mobo is fried, but the third party company they've farmed VAIO support off to says "we no longer support VAIO warranties". So, uh, this thing, that was bought with a 2 year warranty less than 2 years ago, is suddenly not supported. I understand that they may not be able to repair or replace this anymore, but don't business standards acts demand that if you can't honour a warranty due to product/service discontinuation, you credit the customer some other way?

Contact Sony. If the current warranty company won't honor it then maybe theres another company that will.

Has anyone else noticed YouTube's front page sucking ass lately? When I open it it works good the first couple of seconds but after that it loads really slowly and I can't search or click anything.

I've recently had trouble with videos getting out-of-sync before they start, but I also have about 50 tabs open which might be too blame.

How does the yolk manage to stay in the middle of the egg? It's all liquid inside the egg, so I don't understand why it doesn't fall to the top or bottom.

Cells have membranes and cytoskeleton giving them the right shape and structure. If you open a hen's egg carefully you can see the membrane that's keeping the yolk together.

I remember a thread I read recently - which doesn't necessarily mean it was a recent thread - which included a tip for reheating cold pizza that I want to try out. Trouble is, I can't remember the details; I know it started with "Put the pizza in a cold oven and heat it up as the oven heats" but I don't remember anything beyond that (or even if there was anything beyond that!). Later in the thread there was a response from someone stating that they'd tried it and it worked great.

Various searches aren't showing it up, there was a recent "reheat or eat cold" thread, but it's not in that as far as I can tell (There is a youtube video linked on the subject, but the method's different from the one I recall)

Wierd things happening to my WiFi. First it connected well but the speed wasn't good, the company came and changed de router. Good speed again. BUT:

Now I can't connect to the wifi with my laptop (and only my laptop, and only with this router) if I'm too close to it.

From my room (far) it connects fine, but as I approach the living room the connection is lost. Right now I found two spots in the living room where I can connect, but in both cases if I move a little bit (20 centimeters) the connection is lost. Once I spent one hour trying to connect with no luck, then I moved one meter to the side and it connected.

Argh
I even reinstalled Windows because its windows and this solves things sometimes (specially when ita something that doesn't make sense at all).

Amy possible explanation?

They're radio waves bouncing off things, and subject to the same interference. Something has to be fucking with the signal in its current locale. Move it someplace central and place it high.

The problem happens even when there is nothing on the way. I can sit precisely in front of the router and it wont connect (window says 'cant connect to this network'). And if that would be the case I guess other computers/phones would not connect in the same place. :(

I let my oven preheat to 325 degrees, pop it in an let it cook for 15 minutes. There are lots of different ways to reheat cold pizza, including on the stovetop in a skillet, it's all going to come out basically the same. The important thing to take away is to not use the microwave.

When you upload a video to youtube, do your country and language matter have any impact on the kind/amount of exposure you get?

I'm making a video in English, but I live in a country where English is not a native language, and my YouTube country settings are set to France, language is set to English.

Does that have any sort of impact on anything?

Will probably get favoured for French interfaces.

Last Christmas I bought my kids those new Amazon kindles. Now they're fine devices, but I'm a prefer my Android informed, thank you. I'm not familiar with Amazon's ecosystem.

I foolishly set my kids up with child accounts. I did not realize just how crippling this is! My youngest, who is about to turn ten, can't even go on Wikipedia or Google to look up shit for a report. I've been going through menus for an hour now trying to change her to an adult account.

My kids are smart and well behaved, and I've taught them well how horrifying the internet can be. At this stage I'd rather just give them Amazon's Silk browser or chrome and use normal safe search or just trust them. The closest I've found is a way to allow individual websites, which doesn't allow search engines. At least I can allow Wikipedia this way, I suppose.

For the life of me I can not find how to change a child's account into an adult account. Is there some magical way? I even set her birthday to 1990!

For Pete's sake, I just want her to be able to look shit up unfettered by the shitty Amazon children's safety browser. Like I said, I'd be satisfied with Chrome (which I assume is on the Amazon market) and Google's Safesearch.

Tech support question;

Just moved into the second floor of a house and although wifi is included in the rent, the router itself is downstairs in my landlord's unit. I'd like to get wired internet for my desktop computer since it doesn't do wireless; what's the best way to go about it?

I have extra routers from my previous place, but I assume it wouldn't be as simple as plugging one into the phone line and using that as an extender, right?

I can't find the articles, but I do remember reading how some YouTubers like Pewdiepie got a leg up due to the Youtube system working better when you're not from an English speaking country....some how.

This was a few years ago, and things could have changed since.

But TL;DR: I've heard that's true it does have an impact depending on where you are uploading from.

Wouldn't it be easier to just get a USB wifi stick? Not many feasible options if there be no LAN lines.

My friend is going to America in July.

He's visiting New York City, Vegas, and Orlando.

He's wondering about shorts. Shorts are obviously cool in Orlando, but what about Vegas and NYC? Do people wear shorts there? Outside perception of NYC is everyone is pretty dressed up even when casual.

He's wagering shorts are cool for Vegas too, given the whole desert thing.

I've been recording some podcasts but they need some editing. I'm going to practice at it myself, but what would be a fair rate to charge somebody to edit a 2 hour comedic podcast? I just want it to be listenable.
