Stupid Questions |OT| of questions that don't deserve their own threads

How do I get rid of viruses? My browser won't let me go on the internet, says I'm exposed and then a win7 anti virus window pops up telling me I have like 31 viruses.
This thing hit me in a large way. I think I have it cleaned out and now I have a stupid follow-up question.

What file is associated with exe?

None of my icons are linked to the program and a pop-up comes up asking which program to use.

.exe are executable files. They should be able to run on their own. If for some reason your .exe files aren't working, the virus probably fucked with your registry. :/

I think this question might be beyond the scope of this thread. Check one of the threads we've had on the virus; I think this problem has popped up for some other people.

Ok so I've had some audio problems as of late. I'm running windows 7 and I did a clean install a couple of days ago. The audio only screws up when I run video full screen. I can run media through quicktime or windows media player fine, but once I start browsing it screws up. I'm pretty sure I've downloaded all of the drivers necessary, but its still screwing up.

Didn't know where else to ask. Help!

Anyone know a good freeware program for pdf creation and editing? I'm looking to take a few scanned full-page images (jpegs) and collate them into a pdf document. I'm not sure that my scanner software can do this.

Guys, I need to talk to you about Kill List. Quite a few posters I have come to notice, have been banned. Is this a thing. As Kill List, being an actually pretty awesome lofi flick is worth considering your brain time into.

OK thanks. This virus thing is totally new to me.

"Screws up" how? Are you using onboard sound or a PCI card?

How are people sure that the North Pole really is the North Pole and not the South Pole? I mean how can we know what's the upside of Earth?
Or is it just because of the position of the Pole Star?

Because it's called the North Pole, not the Up Pole.

There's an American gameshow in which a contestant tries to guess a word by having two friends flip flop on reading a sentence, or something similar to that. Can anyone tell me the name?

That's the bonus (final) round of Chain Reaction on GSN. A clue comes up and two team members take turns saying only one word each trying to describe the clue to the third member.

This was almost too easy to fix. Once i was able to get into Internet Explorer through a support link, I got to this link http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/File-association-fixes-for-Windows-Vista.html which fixed the association with one click. There's a link for other Windows versions.

My old trusty dusty ldesktop is working again.

I'm surprised the virus busted through my security so easily to begin with.

I've been wondering: how exactly does 1080i resolution work on a 720p display? (Or on 1366x768 displays.) I am generally familiar with how resolution works, and how a 1080i resolution on a 1080p display would just be one half of the interlaced image displayed every other frame. I've seen though that the 720p displays can show what they claim to be 1080i. Is it just downscaling it to 720p and calling it 1080i, or does it somehow cheat and unevenly distribute the vertical lines of resolution?

Why does everyone hate Nickleback?

Every now and then someone makes a burn on them. More recently, I've just noticed almost every comedian strikes them down.

What did they do to deserve it? I like a handful of their songs.. They kinda rock..

can you find the frog? i can´t

Onboard. When I full screen a video the audio starts crackling and its played slower. Its not out of sync either, the video gets slower as well. I don't understand because I used to fullscreen everything and there wasn't a problem.

Bank gaf I've got a few questions about a savings account.

  1. Is there a limit to how much you have to put in there to start one?
  2. Is there a limit to how many accounts you can have at one bank? Does that depend on the bank?
  3. Is a savings account the type of account where you gain interest?

1 - If you mean a minimum deposit, it depends, but generally it will be negligible.
2 - You can generally open multiple savings accounts. I don't know if there's a limit.
3 - Yes.

You know those headphones that wrap around the base of a person's skull? Does anyone use them? Have any recommendations for a great pair? Preferably ones that are secure when jogging/cycling/working out.

Koss Sporta-Pro is a pretty well-regarded headset that can either have its headband oriented vertically or behind the head like you're describing. They're a little expensive, but also more durable and higher quality than ones you're likely to find at local stores. You could also look into the closely related Koss KSC75, which clip directly onto your ears.

hey gaf i have a stupid question: when you´re on facebook in a discussion via the message center...how is it possible to jump right to the first message instead of scrolling up all the time...have a couple of thousands of messages here from the discussions i had with my gf and want to see what the first message of her was :)

To add to what was correctly stated:

1. There is usually a minimum deposit but that does not mean you earn interest on that deposit. Where I work, it only takes a few dollars to open one but you get no interest until there is a balance of a hundred dollars. Banks do not want to pay you if they can avoid it, so they may charge if a minimum balance is not kept.

2. You can have as many as you like although this often means a different account number for each savings account. So you may not be able to have one account number and 20+ savings accounts. When it comes to savings, there's no reason to have that many- one general savings & a holiday account will do.

If you start amassing enough money to have a lot savings accounts, you need better investments like a CD or non-insured types. Speaking of which, in the US, you want to avoid having more than 250k in the bank since it's not insured after that and the rates suck so bad, there's no point.

3. Generally, yes. however, you can also earn interest in checking account too, but they usually pay less and have more stipulations.

How much traffic do Google servers deal with in an hour on a global scale? I'm not really looking for comparisons, just a rough ballpark figure...

Hard to get good figures. 20 Petabytes a day data.

You can find daily usage for Google.com but to include all of google and youtube in all countries etc I don't think that data exists publicly. Depends on the specifics.

Does anyone know where to find a chart about the amount of AAA ratings assigned by Moody's (or US credit agencies in general) around 2000-2008?
Stuff like Ycharts.com are great but don't go into those specifics.

I think I remember reading somewhere that a guy who had aspergers and loved cheese invented the cheese berger. Is this true?

Why do GPS on phones mess up in big cities? Whenever I'm in downtown Chicago, my signal messes up despite having a good cell signal.

I'm looking at getting a washing machine and have very limited options in my country. I've been looking at some with steam features and it seems cool.

However here I can only find a whilrpool aquasteam 1200. It centrifugues at 1200rpm, which is a little less than the 1400 rpm of the competition. Also the motor is the old kind that uses pulleys instead of the integrated one with a 10 year warranty. This only has a 1 year warranty, which worries me a little. Also it's supposed to be noisier.

The alternative are LG and Samsung units that are a little pricier and slightly bigger, but have no steam. The Samsung has the bubble wash thing. They both have the direct drive motor with 10 year guarantee, look better and seem sturdier.

So is steam worth it? Is whirlpool decent? Customer service reviews from them don't seem all that hot. Of course if you look at a review of any washing machine you'll see that it's shit, since only the people that have it fail post reviews apparently.

Any advice?

GPS is a satellite service, it may be that the tall buildings interfere with the satellite signal.
