I'm having an issue with the smaller images in quotes like this. When I click it to make it bigger, it only stays large for as long as I have the mouse button held down, making it hard to scroll around and look at different details. Any way to fix this or stop quotes from shrinking images?
I know I should wait for the Enhanced Edition but...

You could click the triangle to the right of the quoted person's name and go to the original post and see the big image. Or are you trying to not load a new page?

Clicking and dragging a little will keep the image embiggened, but you might not be able to scroll horizontally.
Another solution is to just right click on the image and select "View Image" (or whatever Chrome/IE say) to open up the full image on its own.
Yet another solution is to click on the link in the title of the quote to be taken back to the original post, where the image will be full size.

Ooh, Looks like click->drag, followed by arrow keys to scroll should work.

Can any gmail experts help me out here?

I'm getting a bunch of junk e-mails and I'd love to be able to create a filter to send them straight to the trash. But I have no idea exactly what addresses, words, etc. to highlight.

Any help would be really appreciated.

I've included the most recent mails for reference. I've only edited out my account information.

maybe not the most helpful answer but I've always found that opening the email and clicking 'report spam' to work. After about 4 or 5 reports Gmail seems to know what to do.

What's the least costly way to check in a web app if a database (specifically Oracle) is in good condition? Just open the connection, or should I try to pull from a table as well?

You can't tell whether the DB is in good condition just by pulling random data. You'd really have to frequently do dbv to be sure.
The problem is that while the DB might still be reachable and operational, specific blocks might be fucked.

Usually, dbv is run against an off-line DB to not interfere with or misinterpret write operations. So to make good use of dbv, you would mirror the DB and run dbv against the clone.

There might be tools out there that do some of that stuff without much need for diving into the details. You want to do a little research on that.

Of course, if all you want is ensure that basic functionality is there, you could pull table by table. In that case, just pull the first (or a random, if you want to be fancy) entry from each table with a SELECT and see what happens. Then, you could at least deduct reliability in terms of pulling any data at all, all over the DB. That's really the least you should do.

From a web app perspective, it depends on the framework, but it probably is the least work-intensive in the long run to generate the SELECTs with the help of a script that inspects the database to then return an appropriate SELECT string, and execute it.

Thanks for trying, however it wasn't like that. The most fun part was that you could draw in the forum and share and people can play it back. The Japanese name is too obscure (okaku or something??), but it was mostly for Western people. I used to visit 2 of those forums, but there were lots of them out there.

OMG thank you so much _O_

Have a new question, but not expecting it to be answered:

What's the easiest and best way to make sure all webinput is safely passed through AJAX (javascript), parsed by PHP, stored in MySQL and put back into view, and for edit (in forms)?

For AJAX I have to use escape() to make sure the & symbol doesn't break input.
I'm kinda mixing and matching with my own framework and I'm now kinda stuck on not being able to display éíáó , or not being able to display €, or being able to display both but then ending up with HTML input being parsed as HTML (not safe input output).

1. Use UTF-8
2. Escape stuff (you're doing the right thing there)

You want to escape with respect to interpretation, of course. http://us.php.net/manual/en/function.htmlspecialchars.php

how do i get windows (7 Professional, 64bit) to display japanese file and foldernames?

that was unnecessary stupid

I'm wondering why most elevators in US don't have external displays which show the current location. Some have such displays only on the first floor, but not on the others.
Some have indicators showing whether it's going up or down, but not the actual location.

In China or Japan, external displays on every floor are pretty much the default, such as this or this.

Such indicators play an important role in many Japanese crime TV dramas. A common plot is like this: a suspect flees into an elevator, followed by a group of detectives, when they arrive, the door has already closed, then they will check the indicator to see which floor it stops, then someone will run up or down the stairs to that floor, hoping to encounter the suspect.
Never seen similar plots in American dramas.

The plot you mention exists in American productions as well. They will see the elevator close and just start running up or down to try and catch it, though how they know which floor to check is usually vaguely brushed over. If you just stood there watching the indicator before running after it, wouldn't you have already lost too much time to catch up to the perp?

As for why American elevator's have full indicators more rarely, if you'll allow me to hazard a few guesses.

1. I would think because the first widely used, passenger elevators were designed and implemented in the states, they would typically be of older design, and thus not have the more modern addition of full floor indicators. I don't know the history of elevators enough to say this is true, but I would imagine regardless of the country they are in, the more modern the elevator, the more likely it would be to have the feature.

2. In America, except in the middle of major cities, the urban sprawl means that most large buildings are build with more horizontal square footage and less overall floors. I'm thinking of most modern suburban hospitals and similar buildings. They take up entire city blocks worth of horizontal space but can have anywhere from 2 to 5 or 6 floors, so the need to have an indicator saying how far up or down the cab is would be less essential. It's coming, and it's less than x floors away.

I recently bought a MiFi device Samsung 4G LTE and I have several questions. For one, I had no "insurance" or whatever so I paid $400 plus the device. Since my phone is in my mom's name still and I don't want her knowing I purchased it for personal reasons, I need to get the mobile number of the device itself so I can track data usage. I can't track data usage with my phone's account because it's in my mom's name and I purchased it separately. Where can I find the Mobile number for the LTE so I can login to monitor data usage? Plus, the number I can call to set up payment plans for automatic, where do I find that?

I'm considering transferring schools to get out of my town, but some schools I am looking at on college board have "Roman Catholic Church" under type of school. Does this mean they would require religious classes? Is it worth my time if I do not follow their religion?

This has probably been asked before, but what happened to the marijuana thread?? I remember it was one of the boards i used to lurk before joining.

Drug talk is not tolerated here anymore. Google complained (they're doing ads here, so I guess they have a voice).

Why is it called a 'boxing-ring' and not 'boxing-square'?
It's Square, Why is it Called a Ring?

The term "ring" comes from the original practice of having a circle of spectators form a ring around the two contestants. Often a rope would be held by the crowd to designate the area the fighters would have to move around. There weren't even stools, since the fights were usually outdoors and in isolated areas, so one of the fighter's supporters, called a "second", would kneel with one knee on the ground and the other up to form a seat for the resting fighter between rounds. Also, since boxing was illegal almost everywhere in its early days, if the "proper authorities" dropped in uninvited, the spectators simply dropped the rope and ran in every direction. The police might round up a few of the slow footed, but all the promoters would be out would be the cost of a rope.

Assuming time travel were possible, how far back in time could you take a modern cell phone before it wouldn't work on [service provider here]'s network?

I'm travelling down to London tomorrow, and usually when I'm there I get the £7 all day travel ticket so I can hop about and be a bloody tourist. But I hear that the Oyster card is cheaper.
How is that true when the Oyster card will be charged on average £2.50 per tube trip?

Bought the Lord of the rings blu-ray set last summer off amazon.ca, for my brothers xmas gift. He has just gotten around to watching Return of the King and he let me know that the movie skips at one point. Anybody know what my options are? According to the site my return deadline was 30 days and its way past that.

Stupid question. So my Netflix account has been charged for another month but I'm going to be busy for a while so I'm thinking of putting my account on hold.

Does doing this keep my subscription untouched or will I still "lose" the days I'm not using it?

Anyone know who to fix my Windows 7 Error?
basically if I open up say my music folder and go into a sub folder It comes up
"windows explorer Error" then "restarting" and it shuts all the folder and im back to square one.

This laptop is like 2 months old and XP is what I know well, win 7 is still new to me so I have no idea why it keeps doing it!

How hard is it for a University student with (basic) customer service experience to get a job at a bank as a teller? It seems the only way many students get these jobs is with connections...

I wouldn't expect it is too hard. Teller line is an entry level job. My wife got a job as a teller with no college degree and with work expirience only as a restaurant server and store cashier. But who knows these days.

Edit: and since we are on gaf I feel it necessary to say all the banks she has worked for or applied for require drug screening.

Edit edit: since it sounds like you may work part-time because of school, many banks seem to look for seasonal part time help during the summer.

It's true. Beer has less calories than spirits per ml, but people drink pints or bottles of beer, where one bottle has more calories than a normal serving of rum and Coke, not to mention straight rum.
