I am allergic to cats. If I eat a bowl full of cat hair or cat dander or something, would I have a similar reaction to someone who's allergic to peanuts eating a peanut?

Unlikely. Your allergy operates on a certain immune response in your barrier tissues and fluids, such as your mucus membranes in the respiratory and ocular openings, and in your skin. I suspect your digestive system would simply digest those allergens. The hair might make you pretty unwell though. We're not designed to deal with ingesting hair or fur as some other mammals are.

I'm looking for a charger for my netbook (Asus 1005ha) and every charger i've looked at on Amazon apparently melts, including the official Asus charger. Do I just take my chances or what? My old charger no longer works, but I remember it getting really hot; It never melted, however.

Shipping from Asus's website costs an arm and a leg, so I would prefer to buy from Amazon.

Does anyone have any experience with Sallie Mae? I'm locked out of my account because I forgot my username and password and tried too many times to guess it. The phone number they have on their site calls an automated system. Is there a number I can call to get a real person so I can get my account unlocked?

I've heard that if you change your email address (on your account here on Gaf), you'll have to get approved again, is that true?

FYI: It simply won't let you change it to a free email address. Don't know if you have to go through approval again if you change it to another paid email address. Seems silly though.

Why is Google Chrome doing this? Some videos are normal, but some are green'd out like this:

The same videos work fine on Internet Explorer (ew).

right click on video, go to flash settings, and uncheck "enable hardware acceleration" or whatever. Saved me!

Yeah, wasn't planning on changing it to a free email. Just don't want to lose posting abilities for a couple months to even a year.

How do rich people store their money? I thought money in the banks were insured only up to $250,000. So what do millionaires do to safely store their money?

Most money of large sums isn't usually physical, its all digital. I believe what you are paraphrasing refers to how much money a bank is allowed to have physically at any one time. If a multi millionaire actually wanted a million dollars it would be a large process to move the cash in very secure vans etc and sign forms, bodyguards etc from various places.

According to the FDIC, "The standard insurance amount is $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, for each account ownership category." So I'm talking about individual accounts people may have with banks. If I'm reading this right, that means that if you deposit $260,000, $10,000 of that amount isn't necessarily safe. So I'm wondering how do millionaires reliably store their millions of dollars in banks without having to makes dozens of different accounts? Or am I just misunderstanding all this? Sorry if I'm not asking the question very clearly.

I think he's aiming at the fact that banks can only give you back a maximum of, what he's saying, 250k of your total amount of money when the bank goes bankrupt. So when you have a bank account with $1m, $750k won't be insured when the bank goes bankrupt and you don't have any ways of getting your money back. So how do millionairs prepare for such thing? Split their wealth over various banks?

I could be wrong here though. It's still a legitamite question of mine however. :p

I type wayyy too slow. Stupid phone.

But I'd like to know as well

I would imagine diverse investment is the way to go, if you wish to safeguard large amounts of wealth.

Yep. Though large quantities of cash are still typical. Gotta have that liquidity.

Usually that cash would be with a broker rather than a regular bank, though.

Yeah that was what I was talking about. Sounds like it would be a huge hassle to have to split your wealth around with various banks. Thanks for all the input so far guys.

Less of a hassle than you'd think. Banks are very accommodating when you're rich.

I forget what thread it was in (I thought Pics that make you laugh, but I couldn't find it), but: someone posted a simple comic esque drawing (single panel) of a guy looking down at an erection / pitched tent with a disappointed look in his eye. It's hard to describe, and I really don't want to try and google it.

I know this is the off-topic thread, but can someone give me a reliable website to find game's sales other than ********? I'm trying to prove one of my friends wrong as they think "VG Chartz provides accurate stats."

Wikipedia is alright for worldwide numbers since they usually reference official statements from developers or publishers. Make sure you check the source though. For Japanese games you can use garaph.info as long as you're aware that it doesn't include the last two weeks of sales or so. There is also a very handy spreadsheet made by Chris1964.

If there was a good, reliable and accurate source that was publicly available, VG Chartz would use those numbers and present them as their own.

What's the proper Facebook etiquette when adding someone you just met as a friend?

Met a really, really cool girl last night, and I didn't have a chance to get her number. But I totally felt a connection. Told her I'd see her around (we go to the same school). I never, ever use Facebook, but I liked her so much that I'm willing to make an exception. I just don't know if it'd come across as creepy if I sent her a friend request (we have mutual friends, that's why I know her account despite not asking her for her last name).

If you've talked to her for more than five minutes, you're fine. Stuff like what you described happens all the time. You won't come across as creepy (especially if you go to the same school, and double especially if you have mutual friends).

Not so much of a question, but it definitely didn't deserve its own thread. Today is a glorious day, for my work has un-blocked GAF from the firewall. I have come to rejoin you, brothers and sisters!

Gaf,

How do i save a photoshop image background as transparent? Whenever I save as png with a transparent background and upload, the back is turned white.

Some upload sites don't support transparent pngs (technically they don't support alpha values) I use imgur and it works fine. Also upload online via a 'browse file on computer' option, clicking and dragging transparent png's to and from browsers often means transparency disappears. In photoshop when you save make sure 'As a copy' is ticked

If you are sure you are doing everything right, and have tried uploading the image with imgur, and its not working, post the image and I, or someone else, will have a look and see if we can figure out what's going wrong =] Also say what program/version you are using.

When I use Minus, and upload here, it says "Remote file is too large".

Ugh this is really bothering me. Using Photoshop cs6 by the way.

=S How large is the file? are you sure your uploading a png and not a psd? Are you sure you are saving as a copy and make sure that layers isn't ticked in the save dialogue.

As Maklershed said can you post the image, maybe a small one or something, and maybe a screenshot of your save dialogue box/screen.

EDIT: Just incase its your avatar it seemed to be fine on minus. And imgur is acting up atm

Hey, whatever you did there apparently worked. Yeah, I did all of the things you listed.

Thank you for fixing it!

Weird, I reckon its something to do with your photoshop then, some setting somewhere. Try uploading some other transparent images tomorrow on minus and imgur. May be a bug somewhere in CS6 that needs looking at.

What's up with japanese cds having small slips of paper with art/text on the outside of the jewel case folded around the hinge? Must've imported over a dozen cds over the years and they all came with these. I noticed they all have barcodes on 'em while the cases themselves don't. If its done to keep the case art "unblemished" that's nice but also seems real wasteful. -_-?

It's called an "obi". They usually carry additional information like related products or tie-ins, so it's possible that they're prepared closer to the release date than the rest of the packaging. It also helps make things more uniform when you're lining up the CD's on a shelf.

That makes it seem alil less wasteful. I dunno about the uniform part though. I keep all of these obi's but not with the cases themselves. Seems like it'd be a hassle going to grab one off the shelf and the slip comes right off the one you grabbed or ones right next to it. But the more ya know!

Is that what the sash you wear with a kimono is called?

That wouldn't be the case in a record store though, right? They would still have the plastic on.

And the true collectors would keep the plastic too :P

yes

I feel like I've asked this already somewhere, but why does checking my post history only go so far? I've made loads of posts since the newest one on my list. I check by clicking my username and selecting "find more posts", am I doing it wrong?

Edit: And now it's inexplicably working. Thanks, life!
