I live in a basement suite and get free wireless internet. Sometimes the speed will be fine, but other times I can't even load a website. It will go so slow, that I won't even be able to download a 2mb file. Other times, I can surf the web fine. It's never incredibly fast, but at least it's bearable. Does anyone know why it slows down the way it does? I think my reception is fine, since I'm usually at at least 4 bars (out of 5). It seems to slow down if I try to connect to the wireless with another device, like my phone. Do you think it has something to do with the amount of people connected to the wireless? I talked to the landlord and they say that their internet is fine, but it slows down on every device I have, including my girlfriend's laptop.

I am in debt forever to anyone who can help me fix this. It took me like a half hour to load neogaf to post this and googling has done nothing for me.

It depends on the situation. It's difficult to say blind as you have not provided huge amounts of information. If there are a great many users using the same wifi router it could simply be a matter of user numbers versus available bandwidth - too many clients, or the right number moving an inordinate amount of data across it. Other factors might be things physically blocking the wifi, such as a bath being filled or a garage door coming down between you and the router...or the router might be buggered. A less vague response might be forthcoming with more precise information about the context:

- Number of users
- Physical material types/volumes between you and router
- Use of spaces between you and router
- Usage habits of users
- Timing of outages versus user presence/usage
- Specifications of router

And so forth and so on....

Question about Amazon Marketplace.

I just sold a textbook for the first time, and just today I have received a request for a return from the purchaser. I shipped the textbook on Monday, but it has not arrived yet to the purchaser. Purchaser has requested a return because their instructor sent them a syllabus which apparently had the wrong textbook listed. According to my seller profile, my return policy is the Amazon standard policy (I didn't fill anything out at all when I created my seller account), but I'm not sure if I'm obligated to issue a refund for the item. It's not defective in any way, and it seems the fault lies with the purchaser's instructor for telling them to buy the wrong book.

Any advice?

About to live up to the thread title here. This is a pretty stupid one:

So, do DJs/producers (say, a trance producer/DJ like Armin Van Buuren) create original music, or only work with tracks from other artists? Or both? Like, this AVB track called Imagine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpTcRV5_MjY

What am I listening to? His original creation, or is it a remixed/heavily reworked version of something else, or a blend of samples/sounds/bits and pieces of other songs?

If yes, some or all of this is original, then what are the proper titles to distinguish those DJs that produce their own original music versus those that work at clubs and so on, who artfully layer existing music in order and on top of one another, but who aren't actually crafting original music from scratch?

Both, and even more than that. Can't say much about your specific example because I can't hear it at the moment, but DJs/producers do all sorts of things, including sampling other works, making their own samples, composing leads and "nicking" beats, pitching their own shitty vocals and recording a proper singer, and so on. It really varies a lot from track to track and from producer to producer.

Edit: Even more confusing than that are sample databases and the rather liberal use of them. For instance, you can clearly hear a lot of Reason samples in works, and it's unclear to anyone but the producer whether the licensing is proper or not. Quite a lot of producers don't like to talk about their production software because of things like that.

Does PS3 Netflix not have a search option? I guess that's the one advantage the terrible 360 client has.

Hit triangle.

I saw that Netflix was coming to my country later this year, and since everybody talks about it I'm wondering how it works.

Do they have a load of movies that you can stream all the time or is it a selectable library? Do they have a lot of old movies or mostly new blockbusters? Will the supply suck compared to the American version of Netflix? (I've heard it does in the UK)

If someone could describe Netflix and how it works with a few words that would be helpful!
You'll probably get your question answered much quicker here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=343116&page=207

What are people's thoughts on Overlord: Raising Hell?

Just played the demo. Didn't find it anything special. Having said that, it is just a demo.

Can you increase the health and power bar?

Thanks.

It's a greasemonkey script for firefox only I think. I think it's called "youtube me" or something. You can search for neogaf on the greasemonkey site.
Chrome has an extension called Tampermonkey which is a Greasemonkey clone, you can install all the same UserScripts in there. It's just appending some Javascript to the page, nothing special that Firefox exclusive.

I use a script called "Youtube Me Again" (in Chrome with Tampermonkey). Shows a tiny thumbnail with title/description and the thumbnail will cycle through a few frames of the video when you move your mouse over it. When you click the thumbnail it grows into a full size Youtube player with controls.

Usually some part of a contract thing where the actor can't get top billing but negotiate to be specially called out in some other special manner in the credits.

That's cool thanks.

I have another question.

What's up with age gates on websites? Are they a legal requirement? Why do some just have 'click here if you're over eighteen', but some make you enter a full date of birth? There's really strange things like Steam, where you have to enter despite being logged in, you don't even need to have the date there match the date on your account.

Ahhh age gates. It's like this:
First of all, the law of the land the server is in is what dictates the applied law. Sounds trivial, but we're in internet land, so it isn't.
Age gates are not a legal requirement per se in the US, which is probably what you're referring to (although there's a powerful politic entity that can de-facto force you to implement age gates if they've got you in their sight: The ESRB, which has the power to fine you if your age gate does not meet their rating; basically the same situation as with swearing in broadcasts and the FCC in the US). Anyway, publishers demand age gates by default because they abide to ESRB ratings. They have an interest in advertising to appropriate ages, or at least seeming to have an interest (they have an interest in seeming like they have an interest in advertising to appropriate ages, intense!). Reasons for this interest are numerous. There are the ESRB fines, potential advertising disruption, political considerations, different countries to consider, a standard to live by, all that.
Now, the sites that actually show the trailers have to be on good grounds with publishers when it comes to advertising material. Otherwise, they won't get press copies and shit. And they have to comply with the ESRB ratings because the repercussions could be substantial. So they implement a trivial age gate.
Steam probably did exactly that: They implemented a trivial age gate. They didn't bother with implementing the special case that goes like "Is user logged in? Yes: Is user over age? Yes: Skip age gate" because it's not required by anyone who matters, and users themselves obviously don't mind (after all, the age gates are trivial and just a pro forma, so fuck spending more time than necessary on that shit).

HOWEVER. There are scenarios where the law actually REQUIRES _functioning_ age gates that require registration with some sort of ID. One of these is porn on sites that are served from Germany. Interestingly, German enthusiast game sites were straight-out shut down by the government for a while (and maybe still are on occasion) when they just embedded Gametrailers clips, with age gate and all, because the age gate does not meet legal requirements.

Honestly, speaking as an adult, I _want_ proper age gates everywhere, with registration and all, to get over this bullshit that 18+ games can't be advertised over here because of whateverthefuck with the kids. I'm fed up with this idiotic situation that you still can't purchase Doom on XBOX Live over here although you're legally entitled to obtain a copy.
But legit age gates are not trivial in the least, and most importantly, registering means opening your personal data up for profiling by anyone involved, which makes it almost impossible to figure that out reliably while following privacy laws (and common sense).

So if you read all that, you might've concluded that Steam trailers are either served from the US in Germany if they're age-gated, or they're not following the letter of the law of the land. At some point, the absurdity of the whole thing will lead to a proper framework for this stuff, but we're not there yet. Give it another 20 years.

I have a question based on opinion. If you hear one song on the radio or on a tv show and you like it where do you go to find the rest of that persons material before buying the album(s)? For instance I saw this artist named Ben Howard on David letterman but I'm one in most cases who won't buy an album based on hearing one song. Should I go on iTunes and listen to just the samples?

I'm taking a VB 2010 class and this assignment is bugging me. Here is the assignement:

Rainfall Statistics

Create an application that lets the user enter the rainfall for each of 12 months into an array. The application should calculate and display the following statistics: total rainfall for the year, the average monthly rainfall, and the months with the highest and lowest amounts of rainfall.

Code:
Public Class Form1
    'Class level declarations
    Const intMAX_SUBSCRIPT As Integer = 11 'Upper subscript
    Dim decRain(intMAX_SUBSCRIPT) As Decimal 'Rainfall per month
    Dim strMonths() As String = {"January", "February", "March", "April", "May", "June", "July", "August", "September", "October", "November", "December"}

    Private Sub btnInput_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnInput.Click

        'get data from user
        GetRainData(decRain)

    End Sub

    Sub GetRainData(ByRef decRain() As Decimal)
        Dim intCount As Integer = 0 'loop

        Do While intCount < decRain.Length
            Try
                decRain(intCount) = CDec(InputBox("Please enter the rainfall in inches for " & strMonths(intCount).ToString()))

                intCount += 1
            Catch

            End Try
        Loop

    End Sub

    'TotalArray accept a decimal array and returns the total of its value

    Function TotalArray(ByVal decValues() As Decimal) As Decimal
        Dim decTotalRain As Decimal = 0
        Dim intCount As Integer

        'calculate
        For intCount = 0 To (decValues.Length - 1)
            decTotalRain += decValues(intCount)
        Next

        Return decTotalRain
    End Function

    Function AverageArray(ByVal decValues() As Decimal) As Decimal
        Return TotalArray(decValues) / decValues.Length
    End Function

    Function Highest(ByVal decValues() As Decimal) As Decimal
        Dim intCount As Integer
        Dim decHighest As Decimal

        decHighest = decValues(0)

        For intCount = 1 To (decValues.Length - 1)
            If decValues(intCount) > decHighest Then
                decHighest = decValues(intCount)
            End If
        Next

        Return decHighest
    End Function

    Function Lowest(ByVal decValues() As Decimal) As Decimal
        Dim intCount As Integer
        Dim decLowest As Decimal

        decLowest = decValues(0)

        For intCount = 1 To (decValues.Length - 1)
            If decValues(intCount) < decLowest Then
                decLowest = decValues(intCount)
            End If
        Next

        Return decLowest
    End Function

    Private Sub btnExit_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnExit.Click
        Me.Close()
    End Sub

    Private Sub btnDisplay_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnDisplay.Click

        Dim decTotalRain As Decimal 'holds total rain
        Dim decAverageRain As Decimal 'holds average rain
        Dim decHighestRain As Decimal
        Dim decLowestRain As Decimal

        'get total, average, high and low
        decTotalRain = TotalArray(decRain)
        decAverageRain = AverageArray(decRain)
        decHighestRain = Highest(decRain)
        decLowestRain = Lowest(decRain)

        'display information to labels
        lblTotalRain.Text = "The total annual rainfall was" & decTotalRain.ToString
        lblAverageRain.Text = "The average monthly rainfall was" & decAverageRain.ToString
        lblHighestRain.Text = "The maximum monthly rainfall was" & decHighestRain.ToString & " " & [B]strMonths(Array.IndexOf(decRain, decHighestRain))[/B]
        lblLowestRain.Text = "The minimum monthly rain fall was" & decLowestRain.ToString

        'display to listbox
        lstRainfall.Items.Add("Monthly Rainfall Input")
        lstRainfall.Items.Add("____________________________")

        For intCount = 0 To strMonths.Length - 1
            lstRainfall.Items.Add((decRain(intCount)) & " for " & (strMonths(intCount)))
        Next
    End Sub

    Private Sub btnClear_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnClear.Click
        'Clear the labelBox
        lblTotalRain.Text = String.Empty
        lblAverageRain.Text = String.Empty
        lblHighestRain.Text = String.Empty
        lblLowestRain.Text = String.Empty

        'clear list
        lstRainfall.Items.Clear()

    End Sub
End Class

I basically have it written and it works except for several issues.

1. My average "decAverageRain" isn't displaying at all. I don't know if I did that function right.
2. The bolded part of the code needs to display the month that has the highest/lowest rain fall. It's not displaying as well and I don't know if I did that right either.

Any help would be appreciated.

Spotify.

Yep, the free version of Spotify is pretty good for sampling music. You can only listen to the same song five times though, so you need to pay if you're planning on using it regularly.

I think they removed the 'five listens only' limit recently, as I've been listening to some specific songs way more than 5 times as of late. But yeah, Spotify, YouTube and MySpace (although the latter is shit, it is still somewhat useful for checking out bands and artists) are your best bets.

Visual Basic? Really? :<

Animals can have information, specifically skills, coded in their DNA, no?
I mean, various animals do certain stuff without any training. Unless there's some complex unknown-as-of-yet system for transfering certain memories/skills beetween the mother and the offspring, the information must be in their DNA.

Hey guys, since I am still a junior and don't have the ability to make threads yet, I have a request more than a question. My wife is a teacher at a pretty low scoring, poor school. It's her first year of teaching and Target has a deal that if you vote for her school then they donate gift cards to the school to buy stuff. If you can, please go to this website

https://givewith.target.com/

and type in Fairmount Park 33711

Unfortunately, you have to vote with a facebook account :(

Thank you in advance

hooray for poor schools!

How do I post multiple pictures on someones facebook wall at once? When I go to her wall, it says "message/picture", I click picture, select one, and then I can post it, but I don't want to make 10 posts on her wall for 10 pictures.

I know I can make on album on my own profile and tag her but I don't want the pictures to appear on my own profile.

I'm trying to record audio from my DS to my computer, but using a line-in cable the sound output is really really low. Yes I have the volume maxed on the DS.

How can I improve this?

The easiest way would be to just increase the input sound level from the volume control panel. If that isn't enough you need some kind of amplifier.

I don't think it's possible to post multiple pics in one post on someone else's Facebook wall, actually.

Is it possible to open a family plan with three friends as opposed to actual family members?

Or even if you just lied and sai ur all siblings, is there anything stopping you from doing that?

Whats a family plan. It's for buying a house?

Is there an equation of evil? Or is evil just another construct imposed on us by those in power.

You mean for a cell phone plan? I don't know, but it can't hurt to check. Just remember you'd only be getting one bill, so someone would have to organize intra-group payments.

Probably a topic better suited to a political thread. Though I should warn you, you're not likely to get a positive response to your chart.

I found these pics when browsing an old external HDD. I guess this is a character from some TV show, but what show is it and who is this character?

Yea, I'm sure it's your nephew that has a crush on her.

I'm sure as well. Too many godawful marathons of Hannah Montana are the reason my nephew finally got his own TV. I like Wizards of Waverly Place though...and Good Luck Charlie...and Phineas and Ferb. I only mentioned it because I'm not yet a part of Creepy GAF...

That's Hannah Montana's Emily Osment from R.L. Stine's "The Haunting Hour: Don't Think About It".

My nephew has a crush on her.

You mean I'm your nephew? Never knew I had an uncle on GAF..

Jokes aside, yeah, she's cute. I guess that's why I saved the pics :lol But thanks for the answer. Now I just need to find that movie..

Yes. I do this and have done this for every phone plan I've had. "Family" is just the theme of the plan. I guess it could depend on the provider, but it doesn't really matter because there's no way for them to find out and why would they care?

Tastier, yes healthy no not really. If you're worried about health use something like ghee, olive or coconut oil.
I was just wondering cause I was thinking about five guys and they advertise that they use peanut oil on their fries and was wondering if there was some real benefit.

Why does Gaf hate on Reddit so much?

I mean, sure, it's not very user-friendly, but the content is good. So why the hate?
Because reddit is the definition of a circle jerk at its finest. A lot of "their" content is not even theirs either. There have been front page posts on reddit there were literally just screencaps of a GAF post. A lot of people don't like the upvote/downvote system either because unpopular yet valid opinions are usually downvoted.

There is also Redford ability to take something new and funny and kill it in a single day due to the constant spamming and overuse of memes.

Also, /r/atheism.

All that said, there are still good parts of reddit too, you just have to make an account and go find them. I enjoyed their Dark Souls board.

Hmm, I guess so. Yes, that was the point I was trying to make. I have a reddit account, but I removed all of the major boards (except funny and gaming) and have found smaller boards to be more enjoyable.

But the memes/circlejerking isn't something exclusive to reddit, I've seen it on gaf and 9gag.

And yes, atheism is abnoxious and downright crazy. They are the fundamentalists of atheism

It does exist here too for sure. I'm not sure if pointing that our is frowned upon or I'd it's the GAF hive mind comment that is frowned upon.

So I just installed Windows 7 onto my SSD (after having had it for years but shit happened and I just installed Windows on a HDD) and I'm wondering if there's an easy painless way of getting all my apps and settings to transfer over?

I mean, I want the programs to stay on the HDD, but be able to launch/open them while using Windows on my SSD.

I'm going bonkers...

What the FUCK is up with youtube? I constantly have to refresh the clip and adjust the slider back and forth until the clip starts, if not then the clip keeps buffering for hours without starting.

Hey PythonGAF, can someone do a quick test as I'm not on a machine with Python

Code:
first = fragment(ip/PUSH/“/etc/passwd“,fragsize=24) >>>
first[0])

What will display? the contents of IP, or the fragment of the contents in brackets

In other words, does the [0] splice only see what's inside the brackets? Or outside of it?

Cheers
