The Light of El Cantare
Campione! 01:

This was surprisingly watchable and had nice production values. Yeah, it's a battle harem and the characters are mostly walking cliches, but it was so well-put-together that I almost don't care. The use of magic in the show is also pretty bonkers, resulting in ridiculous stuff like Zoids getting summoned out of magic circles and glowing ponies coming out of stone tablets. It's all chaotic and slightly bizarre, and the battle sequences are all put through some kind of nasty filter for some reason, but somehow I left the episode with the desire to see more.

I was especially impressed by many of the backgrounds, with indoor areas having a warmth and intimacy and outdoor areas exhibiting attention to architecture. There was also an honest-to-goodness 2D car in a short but well-animated stunt driving scene! It also takes place in Italy, which is pleasingly unconventional, but the flavor of the locale is all but lost when the protagonist is Japanese and all of the supporting characters speak perfect Japanese. Hell, even the Italians in the show look oddly Nordic:

I'd call this the surprise of the season so far, but I remember now that I expected nothing out of Jinrui either.

Tomodachi wa Mahou
And, of course, I think we'll agree that this is self-destruction at its finest:

I think you've summed up really well this particular kind of character that doesn't really exist in anime, barring a few notable examples. Vice and addiction are easy ways to bring out the true nature of a character, but the audience demands its characters to be pure and upright. Porn addiction/raging perversion is pretty much the only type that characters can really get away with in anime, and even then generally only when it's used for laughs.

Totally agree with you.

Actually forgot about the great Saint Juste who is definitely one of the better examples. You could even say I've trained myself to in fact.

god dammit :(

An evening spent with shows new and old...

Saint Seiya Omega 11

I know, I'm weeks behind. I barely really even watch this, I just put it on in the background; it's almost entirely contentless really, the characters are barely there and we trundle along from unexciting fight to unexciting fight, but I guess it's okay.

Humanity is Ruined 1

This made me laugh. An anime actually making me laugh out loud! I really enjoyed the twisted sense of humour behind this, and how deadpan the Mediator was about everything, in conjunction with the almost disturbingly cute artstyle. A very pleasant surprise.

Poverty Goddess! 1

Eh. Some nice visual touches and amusing vocal performances but hardly treads new ground. Not for me. I also kept being really freaked out by the music - I didn't know Masashi Hamauzu did anime scores...

Sword Art Online 1

Well, it's less obvious wish fulfilment than Accel World at least. Not really my kind of show these days, but at least the background art is nice.

Arcana Famiglia 1

While the setting is at least a little bit novel, I'm not big on tournament arcs/shows and didn't really like any of the characters so not for me.

Tari Tari 1

This show sure isn't much to look at, is it? It's not quite on the Deen level of flat art but despite the bright colours all the character art feels kind of washed out and simplified. Story-wise I dunno - the central character is pretty annoying and my level of tolerance will depend on whether any of them can properly sing - but I didn't hate this.

Kuroko no Basket 14

Why show, why. Why change awesome OPs and EDs? The new OP isn't that bad, but man do I hate the new ED. That might just be jealously from losing Hyadain's awesome song. :E

I liked the visuals of the OP, not been a fan of either song, but this one had nice Kise screentime and some Aomine, and Kuroko Kagami fist stuff, which is nice.

Diablo Hardcore Mode, this time it's for keeps!

I can't begin to imagine the amount of trolling people will do later on in this. The fact that after an entire month, 2000 people are dead and NOBODY has passed the first floor is really really grim fucking news. This must be what a Demon Souls MMO must be like. I can see a lot of suicides and despair all around considering they're trapped in a world that they have very little hope of getting out of.

Production values were pretty good and I like the camera angles they're using for the Techniques. I did have a small qualm about the music as it seems lighter than it should be. Like when the creator came up, the music was a bit too cheerful for me.

Hoping the writing is solid and they keep the darker element to it.

Sounded more to me like a bunch of scrubs trying to get past tough mobs without grinding on wolves and pigs for a week.

Also have to remember that a majority of players are going to be like Klein, who had no idea how to actually play coming in.

Note however that there was a good number of beta testers, like Kirito, who did get above the first floor. Yea the testers are probably playing much more cautiously however there is something to be said when nobody has still gotten past the first floor. Kirito was bragging how he was going to hit the 8th floor in a month and nothing has happened with him over a month. I mean if people haven't succeeded after an entire month for what is probably the easiest floor then that isn't a great sign for latter adventures. There are a 100 floors, people are going to die from old age in this game.

Its will be interesting if the angst n frustration playing that much part, but considering the medium (LN) and harem hijinks that come after this :/

Just thinking about that, killing the premise for me.

I think its a cool concept. I may have noticed the same thing with the visuals, or at least something felt off.

Best show of the season, of the ones I've seen.
I actually haven't seen almost anything yet, only three shows, EVO weekend baby, stream monstering all night.

This is basically how the filter went.

One second, everything's fine:

And then bam, grainy shit that makes everything look like a compressed .jpg:

It's more noticeable in some scenes than others and looks worse in motion but it never stops being distracting. It's an unfortunate flaw in a show that otherwise looks better than it has any right to.

It was okay I guess. It felt really generic to me. There is this half decent premise of people being trapped inside of an MMORPG world but it doesn't really feel like the story is really doing anything interesting with that concept. The characters are just astoundingly forgettable, and the evil masked man seems like a childish concept when the anime is supposed to be about reality intersecting with the virtual. I'll probably give it a few more chances because this is just the opening episode, but I find it unlikely things will improve unless the unrevealed cast are able to hold my attention.

Edit: Oh yeah, and let me put this microwave right next to my brain for the next several hundred hours.

Nice, we were brought back around, though I think I prefer it more with Kagami, definitely the better light for Kuroko. However, I wouldnt mind seeing him in action with Aomine. They ought to definitely do more clips of the time when all the generations of miracles were together. Based on their interactions, especially at the same table they all are so well together.

Pool moments were great, and hilarious with Kuroko. The other coach was kind of annoying.

Sword Art Online 1

I have to say it.

I called it.

Freaking. Awesome.

So good, man. Reki Kawahara rules. The fact that we're getting animated versions of both Accel World and Sword Art Online simultaneously is so great, haha. This show is basically what .hack// should've been since the beginning. I think some people will be put out by the somewhat
harem
nature of the next events, though.

I wonder if they'll touch the subject of how the developers had to
actually give the avatars their sexual organs because male players would get insanely anxious without them during the Beta test, haha.
It's mentioned in that chapter, but they could fit it among the parts they're actually going to adapt.

it did that really noticably when the scene immediately got cloduy and rainy. Hopefully it is just something in the first episode.

Nice episode overall BUT there is one plot hole i'm not getting.
So we have the third healer in accel world history ..and healers are rare , so rare that people fight about them.
OK why not ?

But why no one is fighting for the ONLY flying avatar in existance in accel world ?
While a little less effective as a member it's still very effective as shown in the previous arc and more rare !!

Would you want to start beef with the black queen? I didn't think so. :p

Well, I think a
healer
holds much more value than a guy who can fly and kick/headbutt people.

And also this, haha.

True but that flying habilities is not to be taken lightly IMO it's a reason big enough to fihgt ...

Flying would probably be more fought over if it was coupled with some long range fighting ability.

Considering what Sliver Crow can basically do is ram himself into them, I can see why no one really cares.

Do expand. I know I'm not free from hypocrisy.
OreImo is a failed social commentary. The fanservice is nothing more than explicit fanservice and does not reflect the main intentions of the show. For someone such as yourself who condemns fanservice like that, I'm surprised how badly you've misunderstood the intent of the fanservice in question.

Yeah, the characters speaking Japanese is pure fantasy, but the looks? Not so much. Many Italians are of Celtic or Germanic descent. Erica in particular is perfectly fine, being Milanese and all.

Hey, it's that folktale that Folktales from Japan covered last week!

The Japanese holiday Tanabata which has its basis in the story of Orihime and Hikoboshi was last week, so that's probably the reason!

Celtic? Does that mean that there are redheaded Italians somewhere out there? Huh.

Dog Days' 1

There is potential for awesome here. Nanami vs Sink should be cool. Also interested in seeing how Becky becomes a hero.

Also, squirrel girl is annoying as fuck and her attendant's eyelashes are fabulous.

The fanservice is a result of the show's overall intent of showing the audience exactly what they want to see, within reason of course. The show is full of poor, thinly-veiled wish fulfillment. I mentioned the anime adaptation subplot because that was especially bad.

Tanabata is generally celebrated on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month, which is 8/24 this year. It can also be celebrated on 7/7 if you don't care about the lunar calendar, which is today!

Ah. Well, Smile Precure had its Tanabata episode last week and it's pretty good about coinciding its holiday episodes with the week of the actual holiday, so I just assumed it was in the vicinity of last week :p

I guess that some in Japan must celebrate Tanabata according to the Gregorian calendar if Folktales from Japan and Poyopoyo both addressed it this week.

Probably IVs from the people outside? They know what's going on with all the deaths.

I got bored of .hack pretty quickly, but this looks far more interesting.

Kokoro Connect was also quite entertaining. I'm glad this season didn't end up a total bomb after all.

Are you saying that because the show has a lot of fanservice, it totally invalidates what the story was about?
